Which Direction?

Post by kalm »

The Republicans fail to re-gain the White House or take control of congress, lose some congressional seats due to incumbents being primaried by the Tea Party, and several key progressive initiatives win ballot approval in the states.

1) Do you think the GOP will move back toward the center?

2) Do you think the GOP SHOULD move back toward the center?

There could be a battle a brewin'.

What is funny is the fact that the platform, once through the primary, didn't quickly move to the center for the POTUS campaign. If the candidate is far right during the primary, and moves towards the center in the campaign, it's not like he will lose the votes from the right wingers. He would still be right of the Dem. They have no choice but to vote for him. The vote will be for the lesser of two evils.

To answer your questions:
1. The GOP will appear to move back toward the center IMO.
2. The GOP should at least lie about moving toward the center.

Let's face it. Does it really matter what promises are made? All promises cannot be fulfilled.
This country needs a sound economic policy, and fast. Without it, we will need to learn to speak Chinese.
Let's go BHO. You have been on vacation for 2-1/2 years. Time to get to work.

Former Ohio Sen. LaTourette (R) was on CNN today lamenting how the Tea Party was "crap" and how moderate Republicans left long ago. His cure, "stop dissing Latino's, get out of peoples bedrooms and their lives."

Sounds like a good start.

Redistricting continues to be the issue, imo. Regardless of who's in the White House, or what party leaders would like to see, plenty of seatholders in congress have no personal motivation to move to the middle.

Face it
Republicans will never get out of peoples bedrooms
or remove themselves from standing in between us and our doctors
The Republican party will never stop believing that Evolution is some elaborate hippie plot
to control the minds of our children and Creationism is Real Science
The Republican party will never stop telling us we're a Christian Nation under Gods control
And that we need to be in the middle of every other country's military business

They'll become more centrist in my mind. Boehner has already conceded he'll look at tax reform and work with the president (although I've heard that before) and I think most of the Republican attempts to block the '12 reelection should be out the window now so they can all get to work.

In a lot of ways it's easier to keep one guy in office for two terms (if you like them or not) just so you don't waste a full 18 months of the first term trying to keep their job for the second. Ibanez's quote above to me is a good start. :twocents:

I agree to some extent. I'd rather be voting for shades of grey somewhere in the center vs. black/white. The Tea Party will diminish and the OWS folks will likely fall by the wayside as well (especially since they really never had an agenda to begin with :? ). But the class warfare that we've witnessed has got to go if you truly want to unify folks, not polarize them. I'm convinced that's really what put Obama over the top in this election.

Libertarians don't care who you sleep with or who you marry
Libertarians understand the phrase "Government shall honor no Religion"
Libertarians tend to believe that 700 billion might be a few hundred billion too high (Pentagon)
Libertarians aren't waging a war on logic and science

If the Republican party adopts any of these positions (which they won't) but if they did - they would waltz into the white house and Senate with control

I predict that the democrats will take this slim victory as some sort of mandate for their hair brained notions and swing too far to the left oissing off the moderate independents, and the republicans will moderate their crazy bullshit long enough to win back the whitehouse and maybe even the senate, then do exactly the same stupid shit they did last time, and so on, and so on, ad infinitum. :coffee:
Dear lord... please allow this dangerous combination of hair spary, bat slobber, and D.O.T. four automatic transmission fluid to excite my mind, occupy my spirits, and enrage my body, provoking me to kick any man or woman in the back of the head regardless of what he or she has or has not done unto me. All my Best, Earlie Cuyler.

I'd love to see some huge mitigation of the influence of lobbyists and superpac's. Spending $2B+ on two candidates for one job paying <$500k/yr is pretty stupid in my mind. TTBF would likely disagree since that's his bread and butter, but campaign finance reform needs to be addressed.

As far as we know the basic GOP platform is:

- Lower taxes across the board
- Strong Military presence
- Limited government assistance programs
- Promoting business growth as a means to expand the economy

And that's ignoring their moral stances of the last few years regarding abortions, gay marriage, recreational drug use, and more recent hot button issues such as the budget deficit, the national debt, illegal immigration.

Their problem is twofold. One, their message isn't resonating with a majority of voters. And the second is that they are becoming too caught up in moral stances and things that have little impact on the topic of the day, the economy.

They don't want government to be involved in the day-to-day lives of its citizens, yet want government to be the morality police of the nation. There's a disconnect there.
MEAC, last one out turn off the lights.

If Republicans ever want to get any kind of significant number of women voters
(Which by they way the clearly do not)
They will stop pandering to the fundamentalist Christians
in fact distance themselves

You don't have to be any religion to know that abortion is wrong and it in no way is "standing in between us and our doctors". BTW, who were you including in the "us" Mr Man?
