I recall Trump referring to illegal immigrants as "illegals" during the debate and I chuckled. Not sure why that term is bad, because it shouldn't be.

Speaking of that. I mean just look at that picture. Is it not pretty darned surreal that there is actually a substantial number of people who are supporting that guy to be President of the United States? I mean really. Just look at that.

There's nothing going on in this country, but there is something going on with the GOP. We're about to have a left-leaning Democrat face off against...a left-leaning Republican. The GOP is seriously about to nominate a Democrat in Republican clothing and they don't even seem to notice. It's ridiculous, but kinda sad.

Regardless, the Dems are licking their chops. Their mobilization to get voters out is going to be insane.

Democrats aren't going to be mobilized to go to the polls to near the levels they were for Obama..

That's fine, but it's going to be a strong effort regardless, especially to get minority voters and independents out. Against Trump, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to absolutely destroy the competition and build momentum for years to come. As much of a pivotal moment as it is for Republicans, it's as much of a pivotal moment for the Democrats.

You take out Trump, then paint every GOP member who endorsed him or have/will hop on his train in a brutally negative way. The Dems won't get the House back (I think), but can certainly win back seats, win the Senate, and shape the Supreme Court/judicial system for years to come.

It could with independents. And truth is, if the animosity is deep, people will turn out to vote against someone as much as for someone they like. Trump, by far, has the worst ratings for any candidate among independents and Democrats. And it's relatively high among Republicans too.

The Dems will seize upon that; a general election is going to be a completely different animal than the primaries. Trump will have to face an already uphill battle against his unfavorable ratings...without moving so center that he alienates his base. He won't be able to tout the "self-funding" claim anymore 'cause he's gonna need help from the GOP's coffers. He's gonna need to unite and mobilize a divided Republican party and get them to the polls. He'll have to debate one of the best political debaters on actual issues in front of a diverse demographic of people (again, without alienating his base). He's going to have to explain Trump University and swindling people out of money, his failed business ventures, cheating on his first wife, the liberal leanings he's had throughout his life (until now of course), his past friendship with a plethora of Democrats, and all his questionable comments.

It's anecdotal, but I work with mostly conservatives, all highly educated and upper-middle class. All but one would vote for Trump. That's a loss of potential campaign donations and more importantly, votes.

Clinton also has high negatives- historically high for the donk nominee. What will her negative ratings look like after six months of Donald Trump every day finding new ways to insult her? She's an establishment candidate running against an anti establishment candidate in an election where anti establishment anger is at a level where we have never seen it before.

I wouldn't say she's one of the best political debaters on actual issues..regardless being better at debating the issues is no guarantee of winning the debates where in the eyes of the "average" American sound bites are better than substance.. She's only debated politicians, she never debated someone like Trump, who's not a politician, who doesn't play by the rules..he will absolutely kill her with the 1 liners..

Clinton's closest has got just as many if not more skeletons than Trumps..This will be the nastiest POTUS campaign that we have ever seen in out lifetimes..

So a conk you work with won't vote for Trump...

Inverse my statement; you know what I meant.

Anyways, I think my point in all of this (as much as I disagree with JSO, he's been correct here) is that the GOP is beginning to do what it did with Romney 2012, except it's significantly worse this time.

All the statistics, all the math pointed to Obama winning by a nice margin leading up to the '12 election, and yet Republicans had absolutely convinced themselves (including many here) that Romney was going to take it. Again, despite every objective number showing otherwise. I'm not trying to ruin any Republican's fun, but this bubble where GOPers are beginning to insulate themselves from what the general electorate want (or will at least vote for) is beginning to take form again.

I'm liberal, you all know that, but as someone who enjoys politics, even this is hard to watch. I watch the Dem debates and they've been rich in ideas and policy. I watch the GOP debates and it's like 5-year olds slinging crap at each other. I might not agree with the general conservative movement, but I know it brings specific ideas to the table that can work and progress the nation. I'd genuinely like to hear those ideas articulated in debates where they need to be defended against opposing view points (something rallies don't offer), but the GOP debates don't even offer that anymore; it's sad.
