I'd miss my green, rolling hills. It is funny that when I look at different areas and think it would be a cool place to live, my next glance is always to see how many golf courses there are. I think Montana has 111 golf courses (and some of them really aren't). I remember when the TPC opened in Myrtle Beach... it was the 100th course in the MB area.

Well, they aren't exactly economic hot spots, excluding the oil boom in the Bakken area. Also not everyone enjoys the slower paced, simpler lifestyle that living in them generally entails.
Sounds like most of the south. :coffee:

GATW is throwing up.
kalmy is......well.....kalmy

Well, there's a reason why Flaggy is tiptoeing out of the room on this one.

Being the world's top ENERGY producer might very well be a good thing - IF it's all forms of energy - nuke, wind, oil, coal, green, renewable, NG, bio and etc - and not just petroleum.

If it's just petroleum, it's a problem. Finite supply which we fight ever harder to extract, thus endangering our environment reinforces the notion of what a dead-end resource it is.

Conks and other petro-heads huzzah over the fact that the U.S. and Canada together, by some estimate, have 100-150 year of oil reserves.   Really? That much, huh? That's good for those of us around in the next 100-150 years, but what are those after that to do?
PetroConks in Texas (now ND) and DC spend billions short-sightedly lobbying against renewable energy and pollution and emissions standards, all of which could string that supply out PLUS, perhaps, replace it with something better. Thinking of the future, sadly, is not a squark in the genetic makeup of Conks, however.

Stuff my portfolio now, fuck the future. Capitalism and entrepreneurialism, Z and Baldy!!!

:ohno:

Here's something we never think about, too: Our oil supply, be it domestic or foreign-sourced is only available to us somewhat readily because of the presence of the US military, a magnanimously expensive guard-at-the-gate and largely lawless (when overseas) roughneck violator of international borders, which happens to also be the single largest consumer of oil on the planet. This is not sustainable.

:ohno:

Finally, Brother Baldy's comment above, reposted below, is an illustration of much Conk thinking on the subject:

Life 101: Not everyone is going to be happy.

They will get over it, and so will you.

In his Darwinian zeal, he says that the oil spills, loss of productive crop/grazing land, polluted water, petro work-related death and injuries, strained schools, overtaxed infrastructure and state/county/municipal support, prostitution, runaway inflation in the present boom areas up North among many other maladies, are things to be suffered as they were, perhaps, back in 1900 in Oklahoma or 1920 southern California. Lots of people are going to get hurt and die, the land will be fouled forever, but, in the end it's worth it, says Baldy.

:ohno:

Brother Baldy's comment was sent from a place, too, that does not have those sorts of problems, though. His largest worry every day in his environment is the fragrant, pinkish-white magnolia leaves falling into his landscaping. Cussing the palm frond that is rubbing on his truck in the gentle tidal breezes and the flamingos shitting in his backyard.

He has never been to Williston or Minot, ND, both before and during the Bakken craze (I have...several times), yet, in a typically arrogant and patriarchal Conk fashion, admonishes us, telling us to "get over" the past, present and future devastation.

So anyway, largest ENERGY producer - Yes. Largest petroleum producer - Not so fast.
Cappy,
We will use oil as long as it is there, or until we find a better solution to our sources of heat and transportation fuel. When it starts to run out, the price point will push us to alternative sources before it is gone. And if there is not enough alternative sources to meet our demands, we will adjust our lifestyles collectively. What's all the pissing and moaning about?

Shortsighted and ignorant, i.e. Donkspeak. Cappy, you know better than that. :ohno:
US Proved oil reserves December 31, 1945: 21 Billion barrels.
US Proved oil reserves December 31, 2011: 29 Billion barrels.

In 1939 the Interior Department claimed that US would have exhausted its oil supplies by 1952. 30 years later, the size of the US reserves had tripled. Nobody is saying oil isn't a finite resource, but it's more likely that man will be walking on the planets of other solar systems before that happens, and petroleum will have gone the way of the steam engine 100's of years before then.

On top of that, over 70% of the earth's crust hasn't even been explored for oil, yet. For all intents and purposes, oil is an infinite resource.
Finally, Brother Baldy's comment above, reposted below, is an illustration of much Conk thinking on the subject:

Life 101: Not everyone is going to be happy.

They will get over it, and so will you.

"Loss of productive crop/grazing land"?..."polluted water"?
Where was this faux outrage when your government mandated that X number of billions of bushels of corn be taken out of the food/feed supply to be used to make corn ethanol. An inefficient, resource sucking, environmentally toxic, highly dangerous, highly corrosive "alternative" to that nasty but more efficient and more environmentally friendly hydrocarbon. But hey, the greenie wackadoodles love it since its not a petroleum based product. Polluted water is a possibility in a highly unlikely event such as an oil spill. I'll take that over the certainty that it takes/wastes on average 3 gallons of water to make one gallon of ethanol.

Cappy, I just love your new found pragmatic Conkness. So concerned about prostitutes running up and down the streets corrupting our children and destroying our "family values". You sir, deserve a medal. Pat Robertson would be proud. :notworthy:

Speaking of being "typically arrogant and patriarchal"....
I live no more than 20 minutes from no less than 4 EPA Superfund sites. Though you have been here, it seems you don't really know anything about my "place". :tothehand:
I wish I had a fucking magnolia tree. Instead I have a 250 year old live oak that sheds leaves 24/7/365. Thank GOD for my gas burning blower and gas burning lawnmower. :thumb:

I appreciate prostitutes - they're the ultimate capitalists, ain't they? Shit, they got vertical integration down to a science, quite literally, as they have cornered the market on that one important commodity!!! Just passin' on to the readers what's near and dear to those poor, trampled folks in western ND, most of whom long for the good old days, I reckon.

Meh. I don't think so. Why build a 6 lane road in the middle of nowhere today when the demand for it won't occur for another 25 years? It took less than 10 years to put a man on the moon (or come up with clever pictures that make it look like we did - amiright spandos?). We can adjust our lifestyles and transform our fleet of cars, busses, and trains to propane, natural gas, battery, hydrogen, etc. in a 20 year period. There is just no point in doing it now.
