Tesla vs. Ford...
Re: Tesla vs. Ford...
The range on my 1996 VW Passat TDI (diesel) wagon was 1,400+ miles.

Tesla range doesn't impress me.

Stop getting all passive-aggressive defensive. So you are stuck driving an Escape...and taking pictures of its dashboard. We won't judge you to your face (that's what PMs are for).Chizzang wrote:oh... and all of you detectives and rocket scientists examining the image
1) I took the picture with my phone
2) I was driving the fucking car
3) I had just filled it up
more images shortly Sherlocks
Only one person, Ivy, thought the car wasn't full. I offered an explanation to cover his failing eyesight (or his age, as most of us older folks associate the gas pump image with the gas tank).
As for the analysis of the range noted by the on board computer, those things are estimates...and the computer can't give an accurate range estimate if the car is idling. Duh.
You'll feel better when you get back on your bike.

The car is idling around 1000rpm and the speedometer is at zero. Park or Drive, either would negatively impact the range...see cleanz's post.

The car has an 12 gallon tank - Ford Eco-boost Esape 4wd 2013
it gets 25 miles to the gallon
it has 270 something miles of total RANGE per tankful
This isn't a conspiracy - it's a FORD ESCAPE 2013 Eco-Boost with 4wd
the only point I'm trying to MAKE is - it's got less range than a TESLA

12 hour drive (so the recharging would add more time), and then once past Flint/Bay City, you'd have to go way the hell out of the way (40+ miles to recharge (although I could visit DSURocks in Traverse City, MI).

Depending on which Eco-Boost it has the mpg is 22/30 or 21/28.

So the range is 332/453 or 317/422

Actually it has been my experience with those "distance till empty" electronic gauges are wildly inaccurate. They lowball you by at least 100 miles

Would you engineer your distance till empty gauge to be wrong low, or wrong high?

The car's internal computer (which I am extremely familiar with) calculates the range based on various usage factors (most of which have to do with RPM's and Idle times... this vehicle has 43K miles on it - at this stage the computer is accurate to within 5%

There is no way the gauge could ever tell you that you have another 20 miles to go when in fact you are out of gas, right? That's a flaw that would cost you customers (especially in the soccer mom set). I would think that anyone designing these gauges would make sure that if they are wrong, they are wrong in favor of saying you have less range than you do.
But I defer to your expertise. I tend to be somewhat Spando-ish when it comes to cars.
