 Wrapped up, my eye! You're probably too young to remember Dukakis's miserable debate performances, like the one where he refused to consider the death penalty for someone who might rape and murder his wife. Fact is that the "Massachusetts Miracle" was a mirage, as the GOP proved, and Dukakis couldn't get out of his own way. Next. :coffee:

Dukakis was way ahead in the polls as a negative reaction to Reagan's failed Presidency, the bitter fruits of which (deficit and malaise) we realized later.

Certainly, he did not score points with red staters for his answer to that question your bring up, but he was still right. You have to distance yourself from being overly emotional in such things and let the law take its course. Is that not the American way?

Then, he got Hortoned, something, as I said, Bush said he regretted later.

Bush attempted to distance himself from Reagan (because he knew the nation needed it) and got overwhelmed by the bad Reagan policies when they finally came to bear. We needed to raise taxes, so he did and, despite his courage, the guy paid the price.

Bump.....Kansas, Alabama, Mississippi, add 3 more states to the list that are unlikely to vote Romney in November. Seriously, if Alabama & Mississippi are gonna go blue then what really is the point of the next 7 months.

Somewhat revisionist history Cat. I think it was Atwater who said he regretted the negative campaign, but even without the Horton incident Dukakis was heading in the wrong direction. The Horton story didn't break until July and didn't air on TV until September...
Two new national polls released yesterday showed Michael S. Dukakis's lead over Vice President Bush narrowing to only a few percentage points.

A Gallup Poll of 1,210 registered voters, conducted June 24-26, have Mr. Dukakis leading, 46 percent to 41 percent. That was closer than the results of a Gallup Poll two weeks earlier, in which the Massachusetts Democrat enjoyed a lead of 52 percent to 38 percent.

An ABC News/Money Magazine Poll, conducted by telephone from June 22 through 26, found that among all adults, registered or not, Mr. Dukakis leads, 45 percent to 42 percent. In late May, Mr. Dukakis led by 52 percent to 41 percent among all adults in an ABC News/Washington Post Poll using the same methodology.

No one will lose like Mondale or Dukakis. Although Obama should win comfortably, Romney will still easily clear 200 electoral votes. The electorate is way too polarized for anyone to be able to win Reagan-style anymore and win that many states, and nobody is running right now who has anywhere near Reagan's command of the electorate (for good or ill). It'll be closer than it was in 2008, but I do think Obama wins comfortably.

Anyone who thinks Bama and Miss is likely to vote Obama over Romney is clueless. There is close to zero chance of that happening.

Only way that could ever happen is if Santorum runs a third party candidacy, splitting the R vote.

Agreed - seriously, who thinks those states are going blue? If there was any credence to people being racist when they vote, you can just look to a handful of states like that. They'll vote for the GOP candidate as long as Obama is the Dem candidate (and really, in most cases they'll vote for the GOP candidate anyway - they vote blindly like D.C. does and other Dem strongholds).

Just read a very candid critique of Romney: Peter Suderman's intriguing analysis of the "consultant candidate" in the March 2012 issue of Reason. I provide the final paragraph in full below:

"In this, his second primary campaign, the problem that consultant Romney has chosen to solve is not the Medicare crisis, the federal debt burden, or sluggish economic growth. Instead, it is how to appeal to a Republican Party torn between Tea Party activists and Beltway moderates. Romney's insistence on having it both ways at every opportunity reveals not just his own incoherence but a party with irreconcilable goals: a leaner federal government that cuts no major programs, a balanced budget with a beefed-up defense budget, entitlements that are reformed and reduced but never cut or changed. What does Mitt Romney believe? Like the [campaign's] PDF says, he believes in America -- and anything America wants him to believe."

Leave it to the Libertarians to provide the pithy outside view. Glad I subscribed.

Latest polls show Romney struggling to even get 150 electoral votes come November. Who in reality will commit career suicide and be Mitt's running mate?

The Sanitary napkin said yesterday that he would consider it in order to help save America. There is a rumor around that Ron Paul has some kind of deal going with the Mutt too.

Let's just say either scenario is possible, which would bring more votes to the ticket between these two?

I'd be okay with Romney. He could actually win it. He's out of touch and says stupid shit, but I think his hearts in the right place. Santorum on the other hand is a fucking nut job.

Rick stated yesterday he'd be Mitts VP. That man is looney tunes.

Are you talking gross votes or net votes? I think Santorum would attract more, but alienate more. Paul would attract the libertarians of all stripes, while scaring fewer off.

Rasmussen (who in presidential elections has a better track record than anyone) in the daily presidential tracking:

"In a hypothetical 2012 matchup, President Obama leads Mitt Romney leads by a single percentage point, 45% to 44%."

Oh, I'm not going to make a bet that Romney wins, not on straight odds anyway, since I think it may be 60-40 Obama wins, but I'll make a bet that it will be closer than 08'.

I'll bet you a C note that Obama gets less than he did in 08', 53%/365 electoral, and Romney gets more than 173 electoral, what McCain got in 08'.

I may take you up on that bet as we get closer.

I followed this site, http://www.electoral-vote.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; before the last election & it was pretty dead on.

It projects Obama 358-180 as of today, but it also projects a clean GOP sweep in the South & frankly you can call me stupid or clueless or whatever (ironic anyone from JMU would call someone else that) but if Romney is the candidate, which he most likely will be, no way he sweeps the South.

That spells blowout. I don't think Romney will do as well as McCain this fall, it will be called early in the evening.
