I'm not saying at all that people were not able to vote correctly. It is a fact that more Americans wanted Gore than Bush, and the Supreme Court had to step in and seat Bush. At the time, it was probably the right thing to do as the country needed closure, it needed to be over.

It would have always been the right thing to do. It's our voting system.

provided all the votes, each and every fucking last one of them, was counted and counted correctly, which i'm not sure anyone is confident happened. The decision the supreme court made was to stop the counting.

Not sure, at the time I sure thought so, now, I just don't really know. The luster has certainly dimmed on the gore marquee, but could it have been any worse than what we ended up with? I don't know.

so you're 100% confident each and every single vote was counted and tabulated 100% correctly?

if so, you're the only one that is

My favorite quote from that election came from Bob Barr, at that time was either a rep or senator. He went on record as saying that it didn't matter if every vote from the primarily minority and socially dis-advantaged districts in Florida was counted.

I never said that, hell I don't that is the case in ANY election. It just so happened in this one, your guy lost. I'm sorry the Supreme Court made the decision it did, because you obviously haven't gotten over it in the 9 years since it happened. I'd be more pissed you got suckered by some Chicago politician into believing he was going to do anything he said.

No. Your speculation is that if all the votes were counted properly the results would have been different, making the supreme courts decision a bad one. That is completely speculative. :thumb:

agreed. Oddly enough, most of the reasons (outside of inexperience) that I didn't vote for the man, he hasn't gone through with. I think what he needs to learn most of all, which (I can't believe I'm saying this) is something Bush did well, is realize not everyone is going to be happy with your decisions. He is trying to hard to be liked, and not trying hard enough getting what he believes in through.

I never said that. Why is this so hard to get across. The decision made can not be deemed correct or incorrect, just legal. Which is why to make a statement that Bush HAD to have the supreme court step in is blasphemous. That is what they did, legally. Using American laws. You can not assume the decision was right based on votes nor wrong based on votes. You seem to think Gore would have won if all the votes were properly counted?

we don't know, that's the tragedy of the situation, the voting process was discounted just to get to the end

the lesson learned by voters that day was that your individual vote does not count, and no one cares if your vote is counted, or if your voice is heard.

Let's tell the whole truth...Gore won the popular vote, but that's not how a President is elected...so when you say "more Americans wanted Gore than Bush, and the Supreme Court had to step in and seat Bush" you are inaccurately describing what happened...

The Supreme Court DID NOT SEAT Bush...they simply did not order yet another recount in Florida...that allowed the Constitutionally mandated Electoral College process to proceed...

If you wish to discuss the need/desire to change that process...OK...

I'm against changing the electoral college system. To have the President selected by straight majority vote would destroy what remains of the Federalist system. Presidential candidates would pander to the population centers in New York and California; the Midwest and South would rarely see another Presidential campaign swing through their region.

Meanwhile, something tells me that 35,000 to 40,000 Marines are getting ready to be deployed. It might be water cooler talk and the daily interaction with MARCORSYSCOM, but we're going in there, pushing our numbers to over 100,000 soilders and Marines. We'll go in the middle, and begin to head North (because we headed South last time).

The fallacy is that the presidential election is (or should be) a "national" election. It is actually 50 state elections. The outcome of the overall vote for the 50 states is not relevant.
