Would be absolute chaos at the convention and political suicide on the part of the Republican party, and not just for 2016. If Trump is close to the 1237 he will be the nominee..SDHornet wrote:Based on what I heard on the radio on my drive home from work is that Trump needed both OH and FL to win the nomination. YOU need to open up your mind. Stop playing victim. The only real thing that is happening is that the entrenched political parties, the ones that play us against each other, are trying DESPERATELY, to have Trump and Sander lose. Good article...as well as the embedded ones.Ivytalk wrote:Here's what Jonah Goldberg says in National Review Online:Pwns wrote:
You can't reason with someone that votes Hillary because we "need a woman president". The same thing happened with Obama and race.
If feminists bring a legitimate gripe then I'll listen. In other words, something besides the discredited pay gap and the idea that banning abortions beyond 20 weeks is like banning pap smears. I'm not entertaining those notions any more than liberals are entertaining the notions that Obama is a Kenyan Muslin Mujahideen.
Ditto with black lives matter. More black teens are killed by police than white teens? That doesn't prove there's any systematic devaluing of black life by police. Also, surveys about drug use don't prove the war on drugs has a racist bias when there's research showing blacks underreport drug use relative to whites and that there are things like concurrent charges that complicate the analysis.
Identity politics suck and completely derail any serious discussion of real issues in an election cycle. What you're saying is a lot like saying in 2004 "well, if the Democrats would share people's concerns about the queers getting joint checking accounts maybe they'd win the blue-collar Billy Bob vote".
The truth is that politics is downstream of culture. And all of these politicians, Trump included, reflect deeper tendencies. Identity politics on the left and the right — from the war on so-called white supremacy to the bitterness of the white backlash — amount to what the French philosopher Julien Benda described as the “intellectual organization of political hatreds.” What’s remarkable about the violence Trump encourages isn’t its sudden appearance. It’s that it took this long.

Oh and another thing there is a conk rule for a contested convention that to be cobsidered a noninee you have to win the majority of delegates in 8 states. Re: 2016 Republican Primary
That's not a hard and fast rule - it was a rule that the nominating convention in 2012 came up with, and it was changed at the time from what was 5 states to 8 states. Each nominating convention makes their own rules, so that rule can be changed, or even discarded, in the run-up to this election.BDKJMU wrote:Oh and another thing there is a conk rule for a contested convention that to be cobsidered a noninee you have to win the majority of delegates in 8 states. With that said, I don't see the scenario where Trump gets really close to 1237, and far ahead of anyone else, and they take the nomination away from him. Might as well say you aren't nominating anyone and then let Trump go his own way as opposed to putting someone else forward. When you tell the voters "nah, you got it wrong" and go a different way that's a recipe for disaster.

Oh, I've always been pretty liberal and I don't try to shy away from it. I don't think I've changed, just been more vocal about it during this election. I'm simply disheartened that the GOP has come down to Trump, but if the Republican electorate wants Trump, then that's the will of the people. Same with the general election.
I just think sometimes it's this forum that insulates itself from what's actually happening demographically around the country, perhaps because we aren't part of that demographic. Or maybe because people fear change (including me sometimes) or think that it's ruining the country. Or that other people's opinions shouldn't be taken seriously. I don't know, perhaps I'm painting with a broad brush.
And honestly, I try to see the conservative perspective and again, I think it often brings good ideas (and have voted for the GOP as my Rep for years now). But in general, I disagree with it almost all the time, especially when it comes to social issues. I just don't find Trump's demagoguery amusing; it reminds me a lot of other failed leaders and while I think our system of checks and balances protect us from the worst of the worst (which Trump is not), he's still a man that could lay a scary precedent/foundation.

Re: 2016 Republican Primary
What precedent is really being set here? Basically, the only thing is that the GOP is having a party outsider sneak in and win the nomination. That's what's different here. Rather than the Dem or the GOP establishment picking the field and then being assured of a nominee who fits the idea of their regular candidate, within reason, we're getting someone that the establishment would never have picked in the first place. The Dems are insulated from this to a point with their super delegates and entrenched minority blocks, so if it was going to happen it was going to happen to the GOP where the establishment doesn't have such an iron grip on ideology like the Dems have.∞∞∞ wrote:Oh, I've always been pretty liberal and I don't try to shy away from it. But the demagogue thing is over played really. I said before that Trump is very much like Berlusconi, at least in terms of the temperament (Berlusconi had a lot of actual political ideas and policies, so they are different there, but both are personally very brash). But other than that, what's the danger with this demagogue? Presidential elections, going back to the very beginning, have always been about the candidates competing against each other and judged largely on their personalities. The issues of course have mattered, no doubt about that, but the personalities have had a lot of sway, and never more so than in the past 50 years. Trump is winning because he's a brash individual in a time where people are fed up with the system the establishment has given us. Perfect candidate for the perfect time. If that's a precedent it's not really one that should be repeated all that often - eventually we'll be less angry, or we'll channel the anger in a different way. Trump is just a man at the end of the day - we've had lesser men assume the office and we survived, I'm sure we will survive a Trump presidency should it transpire.

Agree with everything but the bolded. People are fed up with the results, not necessarily the system. Social issues? Trump is causing the Repubs to have heart attacks. He is certainly no hard core Republican on social issues. Planned Parenthood, religion...the list goes on. Cripes, if you'd actually listen to the guy instead of the media, you might be stunned at how he is more left on social issues than most Republicans. Cripes, Hillary isn't that far removed from, "superpredators," but you seem to embrace her blatant racist statement over Trump.∞∞∞ wrote:Oh, I've always been pretty liberal and I don't try to shy away from it. Trump is not against immigration...just illegal immigration. He is not against Muslins...he just wants to temporarily ban importing them (under the guise of refugees) until we can find out who they are. Do you want the issues in Europe to become issues in America?
