Reagan could run circles around just about anybody that’s come after him.

Consider my Reagan homilies a form of PSA for the gullible and younger generations who believe the propaganda.
Like my uber conservative buddy who owns a C-store likes to point out: "Carter was a terrible president but my business never did better than under his administration". Carter made mistakes but was also prescient regarding our dependence on foreign oil and the environment.
FWIW I like Nixon quite a bit too. Remember: Post partisan...centrist...me!

And Cidney,
You mentioned Carter and I almost forgot about his de-regulation policies.
Here's a piece from the Mises Institute (Yeah, that Mises Institute) claiming he was under-appreciated for laying the ground work of the new economy and tech boom of the late '90's! If only we had de-regulated going forward after that!

I don't doubt that it was possible to do better under Carter, but I question why that was.
Was it because competition was not as fierce? Entrepreneurship dropped during the Carter administration.
Was he in the disco clothing business?

I respect Reagan for what he actually accomplished (I've already covered much of that so I won't rehash it) not for some idealized image of how he's the father of the modern ultra-conservative/tea party movement. The reality is that if Reagan were in politics today many Conks would call him a RINO because he was willing to work with Dems and compromise.kalm wrote:But, but Obama, Clinton, Carter, LBJ, Kennedy, Truman, FDR....AZGrizFan wrote:

I agree that Carter was underrated. His presidency did not turn out well but he was the least hypocritical president we've had in a long time. I also think that Clinton's presidency was a good one as well.
Kennedy is overrated. He had a number of ideas revered by Donks but LBJ was the one that accomplished them. Like Reagan, I wonder how today's Donks would really react to Kennedy. "Don't ask what your country can do for you" seems like the exact opposite of what both parties think.

Not to mention Reagan helped make more guns illegal in America than any President in the history of the country. He'd get an F- rating from the NRA today.UNI88 wrote:The reality is that if Reagan were in politics today many Conks would call him a RINO because he was willing to work with Dems and compromise.
While California governor, he banned open carry via the Mulford Act and instituted a wait period for purchases. He signed FOPA into law in 1986, banning civilian ownership of new machine guns, and he wrote a letter to Congress (co-signed with Carter and Ford) in support of the 1994 assault weapons ban just before it passed.

He sped up the demise of the Soviet Union (on a credit card) and was the catalyst for freedom spreading to Eastern Europe. Some of this was occuring or would have occured regardless but he gets some props here. However, Russia is still a player and semi-antagonist from what I've heard.
He created the trickle down effect by shifting the tax burden lower.
I'll grant you that his charisma and cheerleading brought hope to the country, he did seem to work well with Democrats, and even the russkies where he negotiated nuclear arms reductions. But we still have plenty of nukes in the world and 1980's congressional Dems also deserve some props for working with him.
And yes, he would be called a RINO by some today, even more so if a greater number of conservatives looked at his actual policies rather than be persuaded by his Legacy Project. It's been a masterful feat of rebranding a truly overrated president.
There are many additional un-American things he did (like back door deals with terrorists and autocratic muslim regimes - not that he's alone in this) but like you, there's no need for me to repeat them.
