I think that, most of the time, use of the word "ideologue" is basically an ad hominem technique applied to try to dismiss what somebody is saying without having to argue with the substance of it.
You know, you are an "ideologue" if you criticize people for being "ideologues." Why, because all an "ideologue" is is "a person who believes very strongly in particular principles and tries to follow them carefully" (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dict ... /ideologue" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).
And you may be a person who believes a person should be "open minded" and willing to change their positions. That's a principle you believe in. You're being an "ideologue" even while you are trying to use the term "ideologue" to diminish the position of someone else. They're not following the principle you believe in.
It's quite possible to be an "ideologue" and be completely correct. "Ideologue" does not mean "wrong." It doesn't necessarily mean you are a "follower" or that you haven't intelligently analyzed the situation either. It just means you have established principles from which your positions proceed.

Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Your ability to completely miss a point is astounding...JohnStOnge wrote:I think that, most of the time, use of the word "ideologue" is basically an ad hominem technique applied to try to dismiss what somebody is saying without having to argue with the substance of it.
