Booze Back At URI Tailgates

The 15 year ban on any alcoholic beverages at tailgate parties on the URI campus has been lifted, with a warning it will return if the rules are not followed...

Tailgating all but disappeared at the Kingston Campus after then-URI President Robert Carothers banned booze after a series of incidents in the early 90's...

Students had become intoxicated in tailgate areas, and fraternities were the scenes of repeated disruptive behavior. In 1996, members of the football team raided a fraternity on a Monday afternoon in response to the treatment of two non-roster players at a frat party the previous Saturday night.

The new rules are pretty strict...The lots used by boosters will allow tailgaters to bring in alcohol...lots used by the general public will not allow carry-in, but will have beer and wine for sale...

Kegs, bottles and large quantities of alcohol will not be allowed in the Ryan Center and Ellery Pond donor lots, and alcohol will not be sold in Meade Stadium or the Ryan Center.

URI opens its 2009 season at home vs. Fordham on September 5th.

I've tailgated there twice in the last 4 years.....had no idea I was breaking the rules.

They sure didn't do much of job enforcing it.
