...were booted from the Sun Belt today. After the 2017 season they are on their own for FB. Rumors are Idaho has a BSC invite in which they have to respond by May 4th. As of now NMSU is shit out of luck but is rummored to have a Summit offer on the table.
Idaho and New Mexico State will be dropped from the Sun Belt Conference after the 2017 football season, the conference announced Tuesday.
Sun Belt presidents were scheduled to decide on the schools' fates at a March 10 meeting. The timeline was moved up when the presidents decided to go forward with 10 schools instead of 12. Sun Belt presidents did not take a formal vote in dropping the two schools. It was described more as an initiative to go forward with 10.
No doubt the NCAA's decision to allow 10 member conference host a championship game ended any hope of UI and NMSU being retained as members.
Benson sees his end game come to fruition as he lands his white whale that is Idaho FB. That's one hell of a retirement gift.
You can check out the Vandal board if you wanna see some bullshit that makes eGriz look sane.
Idaho's correct path is clear, though their fans appear too stupid to see it. I have no idea what NMSU is gonna do, though. They have no ties to FCS or the Big Sky. They'd be a worthwhile target for the Big Sky to grab in basketball, but that would give the BSC an awkward 13 teams (after they were so desperate to get back to an even number) and I can't see the Aggies risking their football rivalry with UNM.

You ain't kiddin', they really believe that by being in FBS they get the same level of coverage as Alabama and Ohio State
The majority of Idaho fans are dead set against joining the Big Sky. They feel it is an insult for what they consider the state's flagship university to be the first FBS team that willingly drops down to the FCS.
From what I read Idaho did not want to lose the payouts to G-5 schools for body bag games with P-5 because they are significantly higher that what would be offered to FCS schools who are playing the same opponent. There is also the revenue sharing from any televised games, conference members in a bowl games and the revenue generated by the CFB playoffs and championship game is shared by all FBS teams (that is what I read).
What are most of them are hoping is that Idaho will sock away most of the revenue earned from the SBC for the next two years, then go independent and hope that with the upcoming conference realignments, they can get into a new, more stable conference.
I was also noticing a lot of envy because of Boise State's successes. Most honestly believe if they can stay in the FBS long enough to slide into a better conference, they can do the same.
Basically they see dropping down to the Big Sky as a extreme last resort.

I mean, can you blame the fans? I know for a fact that if MSU or UM threatened to drop to DII, the fans would riot mostly because they'd lose face with their rival. Realities be damned.

NMSU is a former MVC member
They were never I-AA, though, according to cfbdatawarehouse. Wasn't the MVC a mix of I-A and I-AA at the time?
Regardless, I can't imagine the MV(F)C would be in the discussion.

They were a MVC member for olympic sports, and should get a call about it again if the MVC is smart (which it isn't).
MVC/MVFC are two different conferences.
They'd be no more out of the way than Youngstown State, really, in the MVFC. A plane ride is a plane ride. Also in the MVC you've got MSU and WSU out that way already as well.

The MVC still had football when NMSU was in it (1970-83).

Anyway, even if a plane ride is just a plane ride, that would give the MVC an odd number of teams for non-football sports with one new team without a travel partner that's totally outside of everyone else's region. It would make New Mexico State the Hawai'i of the conference, but without the scenery.

Chances are Belmont, ORU or Valpo gets a call as well. All 3 were heavily considered a few years ago when Creighton left
Idalol is a good travel partner pairing with the Bungles. Would it work like that with NMSU and NAU? NMSU wouldn't work for me if that weren't the case. Bringing back Idalol, though, makes a good argument for dumping Siouxie Sioux....
SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Moscow is 90 minutes from Spokane and 7 hours from Pokey. That's who EWU and UI are travel partners in hoops.

Right. Weber is a much better travel partner for ISU than Idaho would be. Also, Suutah is a vastly superior travel partner for NAU than New Mexico State would be. NMSU & NAU aren't even close to each other.
Looks like NMSU is probably Sol. Idaho is a perfect Big Sky fit. Contrary to what is stated here, most Idaho fans I know want the Big Sky. They are tired of being an FBS joke.
