What happens to playoffs next year?
With the MEAC giving up Auto-bid, will the NCAA downsize, or just add another at-large?

When did THAT come down?

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

If anything, the playoffs will expand to 32 before it ever contracts. An extra at-large will be added to the mix which I think most agree would be an improvement over an autobid to the MEAC champ.

Just dreaming but what would be cool is if they could just convince the Ivy to participate.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

No it won't. The playoffs are a big $$ drain for the NCAA. The less games, the less $$ lost.slulionsfan wrote:If anything, the playoffs will expand to 32 before it ever contracts. Re: What happens to playoffs next year?
That leaves only 10 AQ conferences. Any chance they take the field back down to 20? Would save $$ by taking the playoffs from 23 games back down to 19. Could always simply move it back to 24 if the MEAC, SWAC, or Ivy decided to participate.
123 teams this past season (not including UNCC).
-8 Ivy
-10 SWAC
-11 MEAC
= 94 teams eligible, 83 partial to full 63 scholly + the 11 team non scholly Pioneer.
Basically 23 spots for 83 teams +1 for the 11 team non scholly Pioneer. Going to be even more garbage teams getting in if they don't shrink the field back down to 20.

-1 MEAC champ
+1 power conference team that actually deserves to be in
Sounds good to me.

Re: What happens to playoffs next year?
If it were a money drain for the NCAA, there never would have been expansion to 24, and D-II and D-III certainly wouldn't have 32 team brackets. Eight more FCS games isn't going to be an issue, especially when each game is placed out for bid. Individual schools may lose money but not the NCAA. Besides, my point was it will never go back to 20.BDKJMU wrote:No it won't. The playoffs are a big $$ drain for the NCAA. The NCAA gets their money no matter what with bids and what not.
Also the field expanded because it had too by the by-laws. The smallest the field can be now is 20

Re: What happens to playoffs next year?
The NCAA loses money on playoff games. Period. That shouldn't be that hard a concept to understand. The NCAA was forced to expand to at least 22 because of 11 auto bids, and 24 made more sense than 22.slulionsfan wrote:If it were a money drain for the NCAA, there never would have been expansion to 24, and D-II and D-III certainly wouldn't have 32 team brackets. Once again, the NCAA doesn't lose anything. Individual programs, which are members of the NCAA, may lose some money, depending on their bid, but the NCAA as an entity does not. You're wrong. The NCAA plays for:slulionsfan wrote:Once again, the NCAA doesn't lose anything. Individual programs, which are members of the NCAA, may lose some money, depending on their bid, but the NCAA as an entity does not. Period.BDKJMU wrote:

-transportation, lodging, per diem for the selection committees.
-transportation for the teams (the majority of time which are chartered flights),
-lodging & meals for the teams
-transportation & lodging of on-field officials, the instant replay officials, site representative
-per diems and salaries of those officals & site reps.
-things like lights/additional lights for the nationally televised games if the school doesn't have them or they need additional (ex JMU in 08' and UNH this year)
-student athlete drug testing
-year round advisory committes
For Frisco it is a big expense as they are playing the charter flights, lodging for multiple nights & meals for 2 teams, plus the cost of the putting on an NC game at the stadium & the associated festivities.
Just increases the field from 20 to 24 teams, which added only 4 games, added an additional half million plus.
"8. Budget Impact. The estimated budget impact is $503,880 in additional championship
expenses (e.g., transportation, per diem)."
https://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/file ... terial.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So the NCAA is spending well over over 100k per 1st round -semi final game. Most host bids are only in the low 5 figures (minimums are 30k for 1st & 2nd rd, 40k qtrfinals, 50k semis).
(Google FCS playoffs, NCAA, lost $400,000). Old AGS and egriz threads from 4 years ago talking about how the NCAA lost 400k putting on the playoffs the prior season, and that was 5 years ago, the last season at 16 teams and before instant replay. Probably much higher loss now.
