Big South Week 3 Predictions

CSU starts Thursday against Campbell (0-2) from the Pioneer. CSU beat them, 30-10 last season. With so many good returning starters, CSU should have no problem with them. They've spent the last two weeks playing tune-up games.

Monmouth welcomes Wagner from the NEC. Last year, Monmouth beat them adding to Wagners pitful 3-win season. Which is odd b/c the year before, They again lost to Monmouth but went on to a 9-4 record. Monmouth was the 3rd game and their last loss until they played EWU. Again, Monmouth should have no problem taking them down, they've put of 553 yds in their only game of the season, the bulk being from their rushing game.

Coastal Carolina hosts SC State. SC State is coming off a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Clemson Tigers. SC state is 0-3 against us, losing last year in their first meeting since 2006. They were impressive against a weaker squad earlier in the season. They rushed for 7 last week, gave up 73 points before scoring in the 4th. Clemson took over 700 yards, 470 of them in the air, on Saturday. Coastal, doing well against Saturday but playing rather sloppy against NC A&T needs to tighten the screws with their rush defense.

CSU should not have any trouble with Campbell. They had a tough game vs D2 Newberry, which I predicted for all the reasons I said surrounding that game. But now, they are on a short week. They MIGHT be looking a head just a bit to next week, when CSU hosts The Citadel, a huge rivalry game coming to CSU campus for the first time ever. CSU should win it by 17 or more.

Liberty and Gardner-Webb all win fairly easily too. They are just better than the teams they are playing. Monmouth and Wagner? Not sure. Don't know enough about either team.

PC has played Furman very tough lately. They could pull the upset at home, but, I wont predict it. Furman wins..in a close one.

Coastal should beat SC State. SC State always has some great individual athletes, but they usually aren't as good as a whole team as their individual talent is. I think Coastal starts to hit their stride this week, and wins it by 10 or more.

I agree with all your picks this week, and also pick GW to win. SC St. gave CCU fits last year. I hope the NC A&T game taught Coastal to not take anyone lightly. SCSU might be fired up after the Clemson blowout.

The Bucs are coming off a tough win over Newberry last week and will want to make a big statement against a below average Campbell Camels team (even though they are coached by former Flames assistant Mike Minter) Bucs in a rout

Coastal Carolina vs. South Carolina State

The Chants got much more of a fight than they anticipated in Greensboro last Saturday, needing a grind it out drive to hold off the Aggies after taking the lead on a special teams TD. They cannot afford to keep gambling with house money like this and having so many turnovers. CCU wins but if they have another performance like they did last week, this could be the first big upset of the year

Gardner-Webb vs. Lynchburg

VUL is a dumpster fire...GWU rolls...huge

Presbyterian vs. Furman

Before the Hannon injury, I had the Paladins demolishing the Blue Hose...with the new QB running the show, I think Furman wins...but it may be closer than first thought

Monmouth vs. Wagner

This is not the same Wagner squad that went to the playoffs...Hawks win by a TD or two.

Liberty vs. Brevard

Liberty wins...big...and finishes all their tackles this time

Just saw where Coastal game is sold out tomorrow. I didn't get tickets for this game, so looks like I'll miss some nice tailgating. Anyway, I hope this is a sign that fan support is getting stronger. That's one problem with having the school so close to the beach. Too much other activity going on, and people tend to go to one of the many sports bars instead of coming to the game.

CCU games on local TV up there? For the 23 years CSU has had football, we've had the same problem. Even in years where our team was pretty good, we couldn't draw fans. Our stadium, as you all know, is subpar at best (It sucks, I know). But, our crowd doesn't exactly motivate the admin to put money into it. The FINALLY got lights to have Thursday night games to try to get more students out, but then the adult fans don't come because its a workday the next morning and their kids have their own activities.

The students all wanna go party downtown or at the beach on the weekends. And while the CSU alumni support the team, honestly, like most FCS alumni they also root for an FBS team. And if South Carolina or Clemson have a big game, many would rather watch that game.

You guys win a lot more than us, so that helps of course. But yeah, same problem. Charleston is such an amazing city, hard to compete with that to get them to come watch a team that is usually hovering around .500, sometimes is pretty good, and sometimes is just awful.

You ever gone to a game at SC State in Orangeburg? CSU played there in 97 and 99. Now THAT was some good tailgating. For all the problems in this world with race, that day was not one of them. Some wonderful folks who were very friendly, and invited us to join in with some GREAT food.

I have tickets for two home games and hope to go to another or two if time will permit. But you are right. Having two really successful FBS teams in Clemson and USC really hurts the smaller programs on game day here in SC.

Really, two nationally and even globally known tourist cities at that, so there is so much to do on a Saturday in the fall in both cities, CCU and especially CSU really have to work hard to get every person in those seats.
