Good for Maryland. I'm all for banning the death penalty. Way too many cases that ended up being wrong for this to still be a punishment. And it's never been a deterrent. With that said, I'm all for fairly harsh prison sentences, including hard labor. I never understood the "cruel and unusual" argument for not allowing hard labor - as long as it's not unusual, then it can still be cruel. We just need to be more frequent with those types of punishments.

I can't tell the difference. Either Bay works for me. Just keep those dungaree crabs away. That's some straight up west coast nonsense.Ivytalk wrote:I only eat Delaware Bay crabs.93henfan wrote:

Re: Maryland to Ban Death Penalty
I do understand Maryland's take. They spend seven figures, I believe, on average to get an inmate's heart stopped in MD. They've only been able to execute 5 of 58 death row inmates since 1976. Meanwhile, neighboring Virginia has executed 110 in the same time period.GannonFan wrote:Good for Maryland. I'm all for banning the death penalty. Another interesting note, in an article I just read, is that VA has trended toward life without parole sentencing over death. VA's death row is now only 8 inmates, from a peak of 57 in 1995.

Re: Maryland to Ban Death Penalty
You want the Death Penalty to mean something??? ACTUALLY USE IT. You get sentenced to death, you die within 2 years, not 35.
And no more of this life in prison shit. You get 700 years in prison???? Nope, you get the death penalty.

I understand that false conviction and execution is the ultimate foul on humanity, but cases that are slam dunks (video evidence, overwhelming forensics, etc) should be done and over with within five years, IMHO.grizzaholic wrote:You want the Death Penalty to mean something??? So we kill someone that shouldn't have been killed. Have a flat fee for that occurrence. 10 million or something. BFD. Think of the savings.93henfan wrote:I understand that false conviction and execution is the ultimate foul on humanity, but cases that are slam dunks (video evidence, overwhelming forensics, etc) should be done and over with within five years, IMHO.grizzaholic wrote:You want the Death Penalty to mean something??? A wise choice. He's 76, only has one lung, and from the looks of him in that dress and cummerbund they paraded him out in, his waistline may actually be bigger than mine.grizzaholic wrote:Who?93henfan wrote:

Re: Maryland to Ban Death Penalty
So you're ok with abolishing the death penalty if its replaced with hard labor. Well, guess what-MD isn't replacing the death penalty with forced hard labor. And no other state that has abolished the death penalty has replaced it with hard labor.GannonFan wrote:Good for Maryland. I'm all for banning the death penalty. That is not what he said. He said that he favored hard labor. He didn't say that abolishing the death penalty should be conditional on adding hard labor.

But even so, you skipped right over my main objection to the death penalty - we can and have gotten it wrong. Killing a single innocent person (and we've done far more than that) just isn't worth it when you consider that putting a killer away for life is just as effective as keeping them out of society as putting them away in a tiny cell deep underground like in a Supermax prison.
