You have two teams running pretty much identical offenses that both teams practice against all the time. You're going to have a low-scoring game where turnovers, field position, and special teams make the difference. It's no real surprise given how much trouble we have in Charleston and how much more experienced Dupree is than Youyoute that the game would be a coin flip. No GSU fan or El Cid fan (other than maybe eagleskins/seantaylor) are all that surprised.

I have said before that I see no reason why The Citadel can't be a power like Wofford if they were to go back to the option. They way they are executing today reminds me of Wofford. I'd like El Cid's chances if they had App in Charleston, but in Boone I don't think App. State will have too much trouble. Prove me wrong, bellhops.

We have a habit of playing up to GSU, and we have a big habit of laying massive turds in Boone. That is all you need to know. We are much better than last year. If this game was in JHS I would cautiously predict another very close game, like the last two ASU games in Charleston. But it isnt in Charleston, so I expect something along the lines of 31-20.

We have a three game stretch of GSU-ASU-NCSU. Prior to this week, most of us El Cid faithful were saying that possibly the only way we could get to 7 wins this season was to take one of these three. We have our one win, but it was the most likely of the three, and we struggled in spite of the JHS advantage.

GSU looked amazingly high schoolish. Their place kicking is just incredibly bad... two badly missed 30 yd FG's and two KO's out of bounds. Their passing "attack" is pathetic. They have no pitch relationship and can't execute the pitch. They have exactly one playmaker on defense (Brent Russell, who almost singlehandedly won the game on the last series). They commit stupid penalties (PI on an uncatchable ball on 4th and 16 to extend the game winning drive). They were unable to adjust after Citadel committed to stopping the dive coming out of the half. Their ball security is pitiful, which is due to lack of concentration.

Citadel has come a long way in 3 years but GSU is in no way a top 20 team. I'm just thankful they weren't playing NDSU, SHSU, YSU, ODU, MSU, EWU or they'd got beaten by 40. 7-4 and a playoff bubble team...

1. 5/8 passing is not "pathetic", especially when you can average over 10 yards a pass. We've never had an option team with a killer passing game. the passing is perfectly adequate for this offense.

2. The PI call was questionable. Shouldn't have let them convert the 4th and 12 that came after that, though.

3. Nothing new about the kickoff team being subpar. Both the coverage and the kicking were pretty poor last year.

The bottom line is, we got exactly what we expected: a close, low-scoring game, some nice plays and mistakes by Izzy Youyoute. If we aren't a top 20 because of this game, we shouldn't have been a top 20 after we should have lost to The Citadel last year. We are the only fan base that anticipates a difficult road game and then throws in the towel when we lose.

Oh I can think of a few GSU teams that had good passing games... 1985 and 1986, 1998 through 2001, 2004 come to mind immediately. GSU threw it decently last year too. The only GSU should ever get under 100 yds passing is if the coaches choose not to throw it.

You have to take what the defense gives you. The Citadel was not going to let us have a chance at the home run ball like Jacksonville did, so we utilized the shorter passing game and and completed 5 of 8. YOu could argue the coaches should have called more passing plays but we didn't fall short of 100 yards because the passing game is bad.

And of course Monken won't say it publically, but I think he and everyone who follows GSU football knows that Izzy would get off to a rough start.
