Fareed Zakaria Is Suspended After Admitting Plagiarism

"The Indian-born American journalist Fareed Zakaria apologized on Friday for plagiarizing parts of a column on gun control in the Aug. 20 issue of Time magazine, Christine Haughney reported on the New York Times blog Media Decoder.

Time, where Mr. Zakaria is editor at large, and CNN, where he hosts a weekly program on international affairs, said they were suspending him.

“Media reporters have pointed out that paragraphs in my Time column this week bear close similarities to paragraphs in Jill Lepore’s essay in the April 23 issue of The New Yorker,’’ Mr. Zakaria, 48, said in a statement released Friday. “They are right. I made a terrible mistake. It is a serious lapse and one that is entirely my fault. I apologize unreservedly to her, to my editors at Time, and to my readers.”

Really? Disappointment usually means that your expectations weren't met.

Zakaria had some very good articles, with different point of view (right or wrong, it was fresh), many years ago, but he seemed to have gotten lazy because his stuff got very pedestrian. I thought he stopped trying, so I stopped reading.

In the end, you should be disappointed only in yourself, Cap'n. It should be no real surprise that a Donk demonstrated a sense that he was entitled to the fruits of someone else's work. :coffee:

I like FZ but agree with Cluck that his latest stuff wasn't as good as his earlier work. I also wouldn't classify him as a Donk. He has progressive leanings but he's way to moderate to be lumped in with Pelosi, Reid, etc.

I also like it when FZ and Ivy's college roommate Tommy Friedman collaborate.

Get with the program, kalm, this board, and the elections, are about divisiveness. You have to know your audience.

On a scale of zero to ten, with 5 being the voice of reason (me), Cappy being a big, fat zero...never mind, I just tried to work in "big, fat zero" with Cappy, but it doesn't work on this particular scale. Anyway, we'll use Jon as a zero, and Baldy as a 10; that would leave Z-boy to the left of 5. That would make him a Donk on the CS scale of things.

Now, back to banks eliminating ATM fee disclosures.

Wait...

OK, thank you for the clarification. :thumb: But cappy is a terrible example of a complete donk - he's strong anti-union. And Jon, while solidly donk, is a strong supporter of state's rights.

Jon is OK 2/3 of the time, but around election time he suddenly goes all Travis and starts posting the most bizarre things that he finds on DonkSoundbite.com. It makes him lose some credibility and I think that is sad because he usually has his shit packed together.

Speaking of shit, it's hard to believe the dopes in the House passed the bill to eliminate some of the ATM fee disclosures...ostensibly to avoid some frivolous lawsuits from some fraudsters who were screwing with ATMs. That's the tail wagging the dog.

Then again, it was hilarious to read the comments from some genius who was outraged (outraged, I tell you!) that he was charged a $9 ATM fee in a casino. His high school economics teacher must be proud...the guy's in a casino and he's worried about a $9 ATM fee. :dunce:

You just can't make some of this stuff up.

I agree with Cluck quick a bit so I'd put him around 6 or so but you really have to use a BCG Matrix with one axis for fiscal/economic ideals and the other for social ideals. I'm probably an 8 or so on the first and a 2 on the second.

Cluck cluck cluck....the law didn't "eliminate some of the ATM fee disclosures". It eliminated the REDUNDANCY of the disclosures by eliminating the separate placard that was required on the ATM when the fee is disclosed in the process of getting cash and you have the opportunity to cancel out and not get charged a thing. The fees are still disclosed....and my little $250 million shop I run just spent about $35,000 getting in compliance with this and another host of ATM changes that came down the line....

And regarding the casino fee....yeah, that guy can't see the forest for the trees. :dunce: :dunce:

Back to "Donks being Donks"....

The top Homeland Security official accused of cultivating a "frat-house"-style work environment has "voluntarily placed herself on leave" amid an internal review, the department told FoxNews.com late Tuesday evening -- just hours after FoxNews.com contacted the agency about new allegations against her.

Two more Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees came forward this week to complain about "lewd" conduct inside the agency, submitting sworn affidavits that depict graphic comments made by two top officials working under DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano.

The affidavits were given as part of a discrimination and retaliation suit filed earlier this year by James T. Hayes Jr., the head of the New York office for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The two new affidavits described separate incidents in 2009. Both accounts described the actions of ICE chief of staff Suzanne Barr, who was also mentioned in Hayes' lawsuit.

Hayes claims Schriro, who was brought on as a special adviser to Napolitano, was not qualified for the job because she lacked law enforcement experience. Hayes maintained Schriro enjoyed a "long-standing relationship" with Napolitano, and soon pushed him aside "because of this relationship (with Napolitano) and because he was not female," the suit says.
