Terrified students at the Catholic Oikos University were forced to cower in their classrooms and local businesses were evacuated as the police hunted for the suspect, an Asian man in his forties, described as heavy-set and wearing khaki clothing.
The gunman was said to have shot one person at point-blank range in the chest before spraying a lecture room with bullets.
He was on the loose for nearly two hours before walking into a Safeway supermarket five miles away and announcing to startled staff: "I just shot some people."
