F-35 JSF

Post by mrklean »

Do we really need this fighter? It looks like another big money project that will end in failure. Like the F-22(HINT). Up grade our F-15, F-16 and F-18.

They're pretty fun to fly in the Ace Combat series. We should allow the defense companies to sell to other nations instead of this "waiting period" for new tech. Level the playing field a little bit. More sales, more business, more jobs :thumb:

yes we need it, even if it is a failure. If we are not pushing the technology we will fall behind and we do not want that. Better technology saves lives. :twocents:

Ask any Harrier pilot if the VTOL version is needed. They call the Harrier the Widow-Maker for a reason.

I like new tech. I cannot wait for CyberDyne to go online.

GO USA!!!! :thumb:
The Sukhoi and the new Chinese stealth fighter may already outfly our F22 and JSF35 with enhanced capabilities. I don't know how much the future of warfare will include dogfighting since the capabilities of the planes are already nearly exceeding human capabilities. The F15/16/18 are great planes, but are already pretty aged airframes.

If the US is continuing to move down the path of fighters I suspect they'll move toward a fleet of drones - no pesky life support systems, more payload, probably a faster track to development also.

Wrong question. No need for a dogfight if you can blow your enemy out of the sky from miles away.

The Chinese fighter looks like they borrowed an F22 and copied it (like they like to do) but it is largely untested so far. I'd agree with another poster that it really would come down to shooting missiles beyond visual range. Missile tech is probably more important in a true dogfight scenario, but for undetected bombing/strafing runs like the F117's did in GW1 then the speed and stealth pays off. :twocents:

Yes. You can keep putting lipstick on a pig, but its' still a pig. The F-14, 15, 16 and 18 have been great aircraft but their time is reaching an end. And the AV-8B is one rickety motherfucker of an airframe. :coffee:

I think the problem here is that DoD tried to force one thing with different variants on all the services. From what I've read in service magazines, the only one showing much promise is the F-35C, which is the STOVL version assigned to the USMC and RN/RAF. The others will probably get slashed if not completely eliminated due to cost overruns. Besides, we recently (last 10 years or so) introduced updates to the F/A-18, which will probably suffice for the time being for the Navy and the Corps. I can't speak for the USAF or the Army, but they probably have other airframes that can be SLEPed or even have new variants drawn up. I don't see a problem with that. Heck, we're on the zillionth iteration of the C-130, and nobody says anything about that.

Small world.

My wife may have designed the paint job on that Yak at the bottom of the page on your link. My friend had a Yak a while back...he sold it. I am quite sure that was his plane.

In 10 years we won't need fighter planes...the drones will do all of our work.

I don't think we're even supposed to still have the A-10 Warthog/Thunderbolt around anymore, but they've been upgraded continuously to still be one of the most frightening close air support planes around.
