Saturday’s scrimmage pitted ASU’s first-team offense versus its second-team defense and its first-team defense against its second-team offense and both first units looked strong with the season opener at Virginia Tech just two weeks away.
The Mountaineers’ first-team offense scored three touchdowns in six possessions while the first-team defense surrendered only one first down in its six series on the field. In all, the offensive starters racked up 251 yards on 33 plays (7.6 yards per play) while the starting defense allowed a paltry 15 yards on 21 snaps (0.7 yards per play).
Offensively, Appalachian was led by quarterback DeAndre Presley, who completed 10-of-13 passes for two touchdowns and ran twice for 13 yards in just three series. The All-America senior almost led the Mountaineers to scores on all three of his drives but was intercepted in the end zone by freshman Henry Barnes after moving the offense 51 yards on the opening series of the scrimmage.
Newcomers Steven Miller and Bobo Beathard also impressed in their first action in front of the Mountaineer faithful. Miller, a junior-college transfer running back, ran for a scrimmage-best 84 yards on just five carries, highlighted by an electrifying 74-yard touchdown run. Beathard, a freshman wideout, was the day’s leading receiver with four catches for 54 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown from Presley. Senior all-American Brian Quick continued his strong preseason with two catches for 43 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown from Presley. He just missed out on a second touchdown when he was ruled out of bounds on an acrobatic catch in the corner of the end zone.
Defensively, Troy Sanders, Lanston Tanyi and Dan Wylie highlighted the first-team defense’s prolific performance with two tackles for loss apiece. Ed Gainey, Jeremy Kimbrough, Demetrius McCray and John Rizor led the first-teamers with three tackles apiece.
Saturday’s scrimmage was the Mountaineers’ final intrasquad duel before the Sept. 3 season opener at Virginia Tech. Appalachian wraps up fall camp with a pair of practices on Monday before turning its full attention to game-planning for the Hokies on Tuesday.
NOTES: The following Mountaineers did not participate in Saturday’s scrimmage due to minor injuries/ailments: OL Alex Acey (head), LB Zac Baker (head), RB Cedric Baker Boney (thigh), OL Dylan Bostick (illness), DL Davante Harris (ankle), OL Ron Henderson (hand), WR Jamill Lott (knee), P/PK Sam Martin (thigh), WR Andrew Peacock (illness), DL Adam Scott (shoulder), WR Tony Washington (thigh) and RB Travis Wilson (abdomen) ... all are expected to be at 100 percent for the opener in Blacksburg ... Mountaineer legend and current Carolina Panther Armanti Edwards was in attendance for the scrimmage ... after the scrimmage, the Mountaineers signed autographs and took pictures with fans for two hours while kids enjoyed inflatable rides and football-related activities on the Kidd Brewer Stadium turf ... ASU head coach Jerry Moore introduced country-music star Corey Smith for his concert which capped the fun-filled day at The Rock ... the 8,000-plus fans that attended Saturday’s Fan Fest were more than 67 NCAA Division I FCS teams averaged for home games in 2010.

The attendance at Yale's scrimmage should be similar.
Just drop two zeros.

Sounds like a fun day.
Thank goodness that Bobo Beathard and Coco Hillary didn't play in the same receiving corp. It might be a bit too much repetitive syllabification if the Apps has a tandem of Bobo and Coco were on the field at the same time.

Horn In The West closed last weekend for the year - students started rolling in this week. There are 250 student parking spaces there EXCEPT on Saturday mornings due to the farmer's markets.blueballs wrote: Speaking of which, do they still have the Daniel Boone play at that cool ampitheater?
I have no idea where those students put their cars
HEYYYY ... we have lots to do:Ivytalk wrote:Which conclusively proves that there's absolutely nothing else to do in Boone.
1) Watch grass grow; and
2) Observe paint drying.
The issues in Boone/Blowing Rock are not so much there is little to do, but if you want to hassle with the traffic and parking to do it. It's a big hassle, too, with near gridlock at times when the students are in town (and, yup; they'rrrrre baaack
I traveled over to the big community of Todd for Doc & Friends yesterday so I missed the scrimmage. I took the Tater Hill - Howard's Creek Road By-Pass around Boone to avoid traffic in town
I don't want folks (i.e., the Chambers of Commerce/Arts & Cultural types) to take this the wrong way, and we certainly appreciate those economic dollars, but scheduling multiple festivals, concerts, ball games, art shows and other activities EVERY dang weekend has become simply pathetic and annoying when the physical infrastructure (roads, parking, facilities, etc) does not exist.
And, please, don't get me started on the Leaf Lookers and 15 million cars on the Parkway 'communing with the beauty of nature'
(curmudgeon, out)

Re: App gets 8,000+ for fall scrimmage:
The only reason for the large turnout was the well-promoted halftime show.
Famous clips from the movie "Deliverence" were being played, and fans in the stadium (and on the hill) were encouraged to twist their neighbor's ears and have them to squeal like a pig. I heard the Jumbotron had "You've got a purty mouth!" flashing during this event, and the good folks from Boone even imported inbred pre-teen banjo players to fully capture the essence of this celebration.
In the summer, this event plays second fiddle to only one other event....a combined birthday party for all 12 old girls in the Boone area - known as the "Daughter's Debutante", this event signifies a rite of passage where "pa" starts teaching his youngins what family is all about.
ASU is "hot, hot, hot"..............

You do realize the purpose of a "fan fest" right?GRIZ MOBSTER wrote:so your first team O played against your back up D. And your first team D played against the back up O, did I read that right? If so what does that prove?
It is to entertain football craving fans that are hopeful of this year's edition. Defenses are usually ahead of offenses at this point, how entertaining would it be to watch 10 punts?
Besides this probably means we're ready for WCU.

its whats wrong with this country selling shit that is not what it really is, false advertisement. I bet the average fan did not know that was taking place. Just do it right, if you can't enjoy watching your team play, then your are not much of a fan. Hey look our varsity team can destroy our freshmen and sophmores, how awesome we are! I bet any team would look good under that premise.

Re: App gets 8,000+ for fall scrimmage:
This is the 6th year of fanfest, it is run like this everytime. It is a day to meet the players, kids to play on bouncy toys, and see a concert after the scrimmage. Every year 6-9K show up they must not mind it.
Re: App gets 8,000+ for fall scrimmage:
So...they didn't show up for the scrimmage, although that may have been part of it.
They showed up for the concert and the chance to meet the players.

Lighten up Francis....it's a scrimmage, proabably not even full contact. I don't think anyone is saying that ASU is awesome or that we're going to be great based on running some successful sets on offense and defense. It's simply a chance for the fans to see the team for the first time, meet the coaches and players, walk on the field, and see some music.GRIZ MOBSTER wrote:its whats wrong with this country selling shit that is not what it really is, false advertisement. If we put 8K in the seats for a scrimmage, I wonder where that puts us vs. other teams' average attendance......
