GSU, W&M lose DC's to Vandy

Post by Pwns »

Sucks losing a quality coordinator to a team that considers 3 conference wins a year a success.

Dang. I knew this day would come. I wish Bob Shoop all the best at Vandy and beyond.

this is IMO is a HUGE loss for GSU. Granted they have a lot of talent on defense with Russell and company, but the defensive coordinator is usually the key to a good defense nowadays. Just look at what Mississippi State did when Ellis Johnson was the DC there back when they were horrible. They won a bowl game with defense alone. The next year they brought back many starters but not Johnson and they didn't even sniff a bowl game. GSU should be picked to finish at least in the top 2 next year, but right now I don't think they'll win the conference. I could be wrong, I just think that they caught magic in the playoffs this year and Monken could be in for a possible sophomore slump

They won't lose 5 games next year short of catastropic injuries, so anything less than that is technically an improvement.

Losing Coach Pry is a big loss only if they don't replace him with somebody as good or better, so we really don't know how that will pan out yet.

FWIW I have GSU pegged to finish third in the SoCon in 2011 behind Wofford and App, go 8-3 and maybe host a first round (not first weekend) game. GSU will be a better team because they bring everybody back, have a year's worth of experience and growth, plus more depth. They will be a very dangerous team come playoff time barring injuries but I am with you on their not winning the conference. If somehow they do win the conference (which means they defeat either App or Wofford on the road or both) they will deserve a seed for sure.

I don't think it is that big a deal. While I think Pry was a good DC, not great, he can be replaced. The amount of talent GSU will have on defense next season is ungodly. If we don't hire an absolute bum like Anders and Hatcher's 3rd cousins, we will be fine.

Sometimes eagleskins gets it.

GSU's defense was good mostly because we have an outstanding D-line for an FCS team and a fast back 7. GSU could still be scary good next year on D.

for all intents and purposes GSU should be great on defense next year, but the loss of the coordinator makes you take a step back somewhat

Don't think it will unless we hire a terrible DC. I would promote from within. We have everyone back next year, plus some nice transfers and recruits in, not to mention our best defensive player in 09 who was hurt halfway through the year in Dion Dubose. This D will be nasty. Russell should have won the Buchannon this year, and will be on a mission to get it next season.
