W&M Fall Camp Headquarters

Post by Tribe4SF »

Lots of practice photos, and video interviews with players and coaches at this link. Updated daily.

Tribe is down to three candidates for the QB job with DJ Mangas moved to WR this week. Tonight's scrimmage should move the process forward as Mike Callahan, Brent Caprio and Mike Paulus duel it out.

Good luck to WM this season. Only 1 game this year I will not be routing for you...UMass has been down a bit for 2 years, but I think our team will be capable of a 7-4, 8-3 type of year. Hope you guys will be ready, this has a "trap" game written all over it for W/M. Should be an awesome game. If you guys smoke us, you should be in the title hunt come November-January.

If we want to make the playoffs, we most likely will need to beat you guys. Last 5 weeks of the season starting Oct 23 are Delaware, @ North Carolina, @ New Hampshire, @ JMU, Richmond and we get Nova on October 2. We need to go 4-0 going into that Nova game (@UMass, VMI, ODU, @Maine (with URI on 10/9)) otherwise that end of the year will be playoff football each week

Looking forward to returning to Amherst. Last time I was there it was UMass that smoked W&M, and I hope we'll be ready as well. UMass is the unknown quantity in the CAA this year. Very difficult to get a take on how they will be with so many new players.

Both teams will have a lot of new players...UMass picked up a few transfers this year, should help us out. Every year there is a new surprise team that comes out of nowhere in the CAA...this year will be no different. The only problem is I don't know who that will be. Could be UMass this year. I'll go out on a limb, it won't be Rhody...Towson should bring some more to the table this year, but not ready to make a playoff run...Let the games begin!!

-CAA preview said 9 starters back from a 3-5/5-6 team
-tougher schedule (no longer get the CAA North, playing @ W&M & @ an improved Towson instead of Hofstra & Northeastern),
-losing almost all your CAA (8 of 9)& AA studs, 6 who signed pro contracts (more than any other CAA team):
Ducasse (2nd Rd pick Jets)
Cruz (Giants camp)
Miles (Bengals camp)
Zardas (Eagles camp)
Nelson (CFL- Toronto)
Harrington (UFL-Hartford)

and yet you think UMass is going to do much better record wise than last season???

I'll be rooting for UMass to upset W&M as that could help out JMU come the end of the season if both JMU was on the 7-4 playoff bubble and it kept W&M from being on the 7-4 bubble, but I don't see UMass with a winning record.

So how'd the QB battle look at the Saturday scrimmage. Any consensus on who the #1 is?

Looks like either Callahan (5th yr Sr) or Paulus (2 years remaining) with Caprio (RS Frosh) in 3rd. Sounds like offense was strong.

No consensus, but the good news was that all three candidates showed well. The scrimmage was strategic, with a heavy bias towards the passing game which certainly won't be the case during the season. For most Tribe fans this was their only look, so the discussion is not altogether well informed. As far as making a judgment, the only thing you could really say is that it's still close.

I'm feeling 7-4, gut feeling. Trust me, I predicted App State over Michigan...
Don't want to hijack this thread about the outlook on UMass's season.
We will know where we stand after the W/M game.

Just got done reading tge W&M boards on the CAAZone, sounds like a stunner maybe that Callahan may be the starter. I thought this was a two-man battle, wow! Some harsh back & forth's (at least for the Tribe's board) on offseason work ethics too. And I thought I'd only read this stuff on GoHens, haha, we're rubbing off on you.

How is the first game of the year ever a "trap" game? Seriously, who's not up for the opening game?

How is it a trap game? Well, we lost a lot of talent last year(kind of an oxymoron) and were 7-5, 5-6 over the last two years. We were picked 8th in the CAA, no one is giving us much respect. W/M will be probably favored by 10-14 pt. spread going into this game. I think W/M will be flat for this game, long road trip, UM has been down for the last two years..I'm not sure what we have this year...could be Jeckly or Hide.... We have the potential for a nasty, strong running game, much like '06. If we don't have to pass alot, we should be ok this year. Had a number of key transfers come in..We've moved some big knarly O-lineman to D-line who have had D-line expeirance, should clog up the middle and let our speedy lb's clean up. What else do you need for a trap game?

Wouldn't dream of it. There are a number of things that will get you a night in the box, but cuttin' the heads off parkin' meters in the 'Burg is definitely high on the list of municipal offenses.

Actually there are a number of them around campus now. None have had the heads cut off yet, but that will surely bring a night in the box.

I will be in attendance at the UMass vs W&M game roaming the sidelines and up in the press box. I was not able to see either of these teams in Aug, so this will make a good opportunity to get a good feel for both of them. The folks @ UMass are telling me they're looking to return to playing "Smashmouth" football, and that they plan on being very physical this year. For the Tribe, I'm told it's "Business as Usual...Sound Defense, Strong Running game". The only question mark (from my conversation with Coach Laycock in June) was at the QB spot.

I personally have the Tribe winning this one, but it's a road game with a new QB, and the Minuteman plan to be everything but hospitable. Should make for a great first game of the season.

Laycock will announce the starter at QB on Monday morning. Only misinformation in this article is that Caprio was with the travel team all of last season, and did not run the scout team.
