On a beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon, they gathered in A.W. Mumford Stadium to get their first look at the Southern football team under new coach Stump Mitchell.
The gates were open for the final scrimmage of spring practice, and a few hundred fans passed through them to take a look. Birds chirped. Players hustled from station to station, moving to the sounds of whistles and cheers.
