Texas State coach issues....

Post by slycat »

The contract of Texas States head football coach, Brad Wright, ends after 12/31/09. As of today there has still been no official word he has signed an extension.

According to sources on Bobcatfans, he was offered a 4 year extension earlier this month with a rumored 200k base salary and a 300k bonus if he wins the national championship. (He is currently making approximately 170k).

This story has been going around for a while in San Marcos after Wright went public to announce his displeasure with the school for not offering him the money he feels he deserves for himself and assistants. Wright lead Texas St to back-to-back winning season for the first time since the early to mid 90s.

Our AD already gave our mens basketball coach a three year extension and he has yet to post a winning record.

It seems that Wright is playing chicken with the AD and holding out for more.

Have any of y'all seen a situation like this before? This could get really weird if something isn't signed tomorrow and the contract is officially expired.

coaches not signing their contracts is pretty much a common theme in San Marcos. Our previous coach (David Bailiff) never signed his contract extension, instead he ended up interviewing for Rice and left. The coach before him also didn't sign his contract, which is just as well since he got fired less than a year after taking the job. My guess he is just waiting for a job opening at the FBS level. Before one thinks this is a joke, well Franchione and Bailif bailed out on TxSt within two and three years with worse records than Wright.

Ah yes I had put the Bailiff issue out of my memory. This must great for recruiting purposes.

Sets us up again to do zero searching for a coach and promote within.

Well then that would seem to put the University in a tougher spot if he doesn't sign doesn't it? Maybe he's using that to his advantage to get what he wants.

He could really fuck 'em over if he waits until AFTER the recruiting season to not sign....not sure what that would do for future employment prospects, however...it's a double edged sword. :coffee:

True but I would have to lay that at the Universities footstep as well. If they want him then they've got to make the move to keep him. It is his responsibility to honor his contract which he is doing. It is their responsibility to keep him if they want him.

Considering we have the largest Athletic budget in the SLC, we got a bunch of money to improve the FB program, stadium, etc. and they want to move to FBS I don't think Wright is being pissy wanting more $$ for his assistants. That's why he didn't sign the 1 year extension last winter. Plus, he's done more for our program than, dare I say it, even Bailiff. Bailiff had 1 winning season with recruits that were not his own. Made the 2005 playoff run, lost 29 players, tanked the next season, then bailed on us. Wright wants to stay and has done an excellent job of recruiting....most of whom (his recruits) will be Jr's and lower next season. It's turned into a game of who is going to give in first. That or they want to hit the recruiting trail and get past signing day first...then worry about contracts.

I agree, since Bailiff left right before National Signing Day, Wright's contract wouldn't be up before March. Makes sense.

Is this the coach that you want on a 4-year contract given your goal of moving to 1-A in 2012?

That has been a big topic on Bobcatfans.

Some argue that a coach change this close to the potential move could cause the program to go in the wrong direction by learning a new system. Plus Wright is producing a winning team.

Others say we need to dump a guy that has only previously coached high school and pick up a big name like UTSA did with Larry Coker.

Regardless, it seems that you would want a 2-year contract maximum right now - given your goal of moving up...

I've never been on the fire Wright or we need a big name coach to get us where we want to go. Every coach has to start somewhere. At least Wright came to TXST as a winning coach in HS and he has been there since '04 when he was hired as Assoc HC under Bailiff. It's not like he just dropped off the apple cart. (He was also a grad asst under Wacker) As Sly said, he is producing a winning team, which hasn't been seen in decades. 2 wining seasons in 3 years and his recruits are just coming into their own. And, what Sly said is true...do we really want to have a change of the guard so close to the moratorium being lifted? I, for one, don't want to see the team have to go through what they did the past 3 years...yet again. Especially the D which had 3 diff coordinators in 2 years. The guys there have now been under 1 DC for 2 seasons and started to gel this year. Next year, with the same DC, same guys, same schemes, I see improvement. Bringing in all new personnel would set us back. It's going to be enough of a trial with a new QB.

My issues are the basketball program that is the worst in the SLC and they just gave the coach a new contract. That is the biggest problem right now for a move up (which I don't want but have no say in anyway)

Seems ideal. I'm just glad the new contract sounds like it will be incentive laden.
