Edwards, Johnson, Morris national players of the week

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards, Eastern Washington linebacker Matt Johnson and Southern Illinois special teams performer Bryce Morris have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Armanti Edwards, Senior, 6-0, 184, Quarterback, Greenwood, S.C.
Edwards piled up the fourth-highest, single-game total offense performance in Appalachian State history as the Mountaineers torched Furman, 52-27, Saturday on the road. Playing just three quarters, Edwards completed 25-of-36 passes for 355 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 106 yards and four more scores. The 2008 Payton Award winner also became the first player in NCAA Division I history to exceed the 9,000-yard barrier in passing and the 4,000-mark in rushing for a career. Edwards now has 9,184 yards passing and 4,132 yards rushing for a career total offense figure of 13,316 yards. His total offense mark ranks him fourth in FCS history. It was the second time this season that Edwards has been named national player of the week.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Matt Johnson, Eastern Washington, Sophomore, 6-1, 205, Linebacker, Tumwater, WA.
Johnson tied a Big Sky Conference record with four interceptions in Eastern Washington's 47-10 victory over Portland State at Seattle's Qwest Field. Johnson became the third player in league history to pick off four passes in a
game, and the first in 20 years. He tied the mark held by Ed Cerkovnik of Montana (1977) and Mike Babb of Weber State (1989). Johnson picked off two passes in the first quarter. His third interception came in the second quarter and stopped a PSU scoring drive. Johnson added the fourth interception in the fourth quarter. Eastern Washington limited Portland State's run and shoot offense to 163 passing yards, one season after the Vikings had 623 passing yards in an upset of the Eagles. Johnson also registered two tackles.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bryce Morris, Southern Illinois, Senior, 6-1, 215, Wide Receiver, Olathe, KS.
Morris helped Southern Illinois keep on track towards a possible Missouri Valley Football Conference title when he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to spark a 21-0 second-quarter run in the Salukis' 33-0 victory over Indiana State Saturday on the road. With the Salukis leading just 14-0 late in the second quarter, Morris broke through the line and blocked a punt and returned it four yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0 with 2:22 remaining in the first half. Morris was also a major cog in the SIU offense during the day, hauling in a game-high four passes for 80 yards, including one 37 yarder.

Eastern Washington linebacker Matt Johnson, Central Connecticut State runningback James Mallory, Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards, and quarterback Bradley George of Texas State are the recipients of the Football Championship Subdivision honors from College Sporting News for the week ending November 1, 2009.
Each of the honorees are listed here with their achievements and their school, position, height, weight, class and hometown.

Matt Johnson, Eastern Washington, LB, 6-1, 205, So., Tumwater, WA
Johnson tied a Big Sky Conference record with four interceptions in the Eagles’ 47-10 victory over Portland State in Seattle, Wash. Johnson became the first player in league history to intercept four passes in a game, and the first in 20 years. Johnson picked off two passes in the first quarter. His third interception came in the second quarter and stopped a PSU scoring drive. Johnson added the fourth interception in the fourth quarter. Eastern Washington limited Portland State to 163 passing yards a season after the Vikings had 623 passing yards in an upset of the Eagles. Johnson also registered two tackles.
James Mallory, Central Connecticut State, RB, 5-10, 200, Sr., Buffalo, NY
Mallory rushed 23 times for 204 yards and three touchdowns to carry Central Connecticut State to its sixth consecutive victory., one that gave the Blue Devils sole possession of first place in the Northeast Conference standings. Mallory scored his third touchdown of the game, a one-yard burst, to put the Blue Devils ahead for good, 28-23, with 00:42 remaining in the third quarter. His 79-yard touchdown run on CCSU’s first play from scrimmage allowed the Blue Devils to take an early 7-6 advantage. On his way to averaging 8.9 yards per carry, Mallory gained no fewer than five yards on 12 of his rushes. While his team dealt Albany its first NEC loss since the 2006 regular season finale, Mallory became the second-leading scorer in CCSU history (184 pts.)

Edwards amassed the fourth-highest single-game total offensive yardage output in school history (461 yards) despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter in Appalachian State’s 52-27 win at Furman. In doing so, he became the first player in NCAA Division I history (FCS or FBS) with 9,000 passing yards and 4,000 rushing yards in a career, and he moved to fourth in NCAA Division I FCS history with 13,316 career yards of total offense. Edwards compiled 355 yards passing with a pair of touchdowns to go along with 106 rushing yards and four scores.

Bradley George, Texas State, QB, 6-6, 220, Sr., New Braunfels, TX
George tied a school record with 30 completions and threw for a season-best four touchdowns to lead Texas State to a 28-7 victory over No. 15/11 Stephen F. Austin. He also recorded his fourth 300-yard passing game of the season with 303 yards. He completed 30-of-41 passes and helped Texas State win its third consecutive Southland Conference game.

CAA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK -- NOV. 2

RICHMOND, Va. (November 2, 2009) -- CAA Football announced its Player of the Week honorees, Monday, Nov. 2. Four individuals earned honors after showcasing superb efforts in contests played in Week Nine of the 2009 season, including James Madison’s Justin Thorpe and Chase Williams, Maine’s Donte Dennis and William and Mary’s David Miller.

CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week - Justin Thorpe, QB, James Madison
Thorpe earns CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week honors after leading James Madison to a 20-8 win on the road over No. 16 Delaware. The redshirt freshman quarterback garnered 304 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in the Dukes’ first conference victory of the season. Thorpe, a Richmond, Va., native completed 11-of-15 passes for a career-high 262 yards and touchdown and rushed 11 times for 42 yards including a 12-yard touchdown. Thorpe and JMU’s offense compiled 229 yards through the air in the second half, helping it outscore the Blue Hens 20-5 over the game’s final 30 minutes.

CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week - Donte Dennis, LB, Maine
Dennis, the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week, led Maine to a 19-9 win over No. 19 Massachusetts in Orono, Maine, Saturday. The sophomore linebacker contributed 11 tackles and one tackle for a loss of three to the Black Bears’ defensive effort against the Minutemen. The Rahway, N.J., native also broke up two passes, recovered a fumble and hauled in two of the four interceptions forced by Maine on the day. Dennis’ first interception on the day took place around midfield with just three minutes to play in the first half. The Black Bears took advantage of the first of its six forced turnovers by marching the ball 46 yards for a touchdown which proved to be Maine’s game-winner.

CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week - David Miller, P, William and Mary
Miller, the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week, averaged 48.7 yards a punt on six attempts in William and Mary’s 39-14 win at Rhode Island. The junior placed three of his six punts inside the 20 and two inside the 10. The Centreville, Va., native also booted a career-best 71-yard punt in the fourth quarter against the Rams. The 2008 CAA Football All-Conference Third Team punter leads the league and ranks fourth nationally with a 44.7 yard/punt average.

CAA Football Rookie of the Week - Chase Williams, LB, James Madison
Williams earned Rookie of the Week honors after helping James Madison to a 20-8 win on the road over No. 16 Delaware. Williams, a Gaithersburg, Md., native was part of a defensive unit which held the Blue Hens’ offense to a season-low 224 yards of total offense, including just nine rushing yards. Williams, who was starting in place of an injured Jamie Veney, recorded a team-high 11 tackles and also took part in 1.5 of Madison’s eight sacks on the day.

Big Sky honors Reynolds, Johnson, Heath
OGDEN, UTAH (Nov. 2, 2009) - The Big Sky Conference has selected its football Players of the Week for games played on Saturday, Oct. 31. Montana running back Chase Reynolds is the Offensive Player of the Week. Eastern Washington linebacker Matt Johnson is the Defensive Player of the Week. Sacramento State punter Augie Heath is the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Reynolds, a 6-foot, 195-pound junior from Drummond, Mont., rushed for a career-high 241 yards on 33 carries and scored one touchdown in second-ranked Montana’s 31-10 victory over No. 14 Weber State. The 241 yards are the most by a Big Sky Conference running back this season. Reynolds helped Montana control the time in possession in the second half, rushing 21 times for 193 yards over the final 30 minutes. Montana held the ball for more than 20 minutes in the second half. Reynolds scored on a 2-yard run early in the third quarter to put Montana up 20-3.

Heath a 5-11, 185-pound sophomore from Chico, Calif., punted five times for an average of 41.6 yards per kick in Sacramento State’s 27-24 upset of No. 21 Northern Arizona. Heath pinned NAU inside its 20-yard line four times, and once right at the 20-yard line. His last effort pinned NAU at its own 4-yard line with 2:51 left in the game. Heath had a long punt of 51 yards, and also ran a fake punt 18 yards to set up a Hornet touchdown.

This week's Missouri Valley Football Conference players of the week are QB Paul McIntosh of Southern Illinois; DE Coulter Boyer of North Dakota State; and WR Bryce Morris. Each played a key role in his team's victory this past Saturday.

Offense
QB Paul McIntosh, Southern Illinois, Fr., 6-2, 205, Evansville (Ind.) Reitz High
 Redshirt freshman QB Paul McIntosh threw for 159 yards and ran for 57 with two rushing touchdowns while making his first career start. He completed 15-of-22 passes without an interception in SIU’s 33-0 win over Indiana State. McIntosh’s longest completion was for 37 yards to Bryce Morris and his long run on the day was a 32-yard scamper. He was not sacked once on the afternoon.

Defense
DE Coulter Boyer, North Dakota State, So., 6-4, 255, Hurley (S.D.) High
 Boyer had three of North Dakota State’s seven sacks in the Bison 14-7 win over Western Illinois in Macomb. Boyer had five tackles including 3.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Two of Boyer’s sacks came during the Leathernecks final two drives of the game including a forced fumble on the last drive. NDSU’s defense held Western Illinois to 206 yards of total offense. The Bison had a season-high four takeaways – the previous high was two at Iowa State and vs. Wagner.

Special Teams
WR Bryce Morris, Southern Illinois, 6-1, 215, Sr., Olathe (Kan.) South High
 Morris blocked a punt late in the second quarter that was recovered by Beau Hoffman and returned four yards for a touchdown. It was the second-straight game that SIU has blocked a punt. Morris finished the day with four catches for a career-high 80 yards and the first blocked punt of his career.

Offensive Lineman
LG Nick Bledsoe, Illinois State, So., 6-2, 290, Wheeling, Ill. (Wheeling HS)
Bledsoe led the way for Illinois State's first 100-yard rusher of the season and graded out at 91 percent in Illinois State's 24-14 road win at Missouri State on Saturday. The Wheeling, Ill., native was also credited with a pancake block and two knockdowns against the Bears as the Redbirds racked up a season-high 178 yards on the ground thanks to Cliffton Gordon's career-high 122 yards rushing. Bledsoe and his teammates also did not allow a sack in the game, marking the third time this season the unit has accomplished that feat.

SoCon Announces Week Nine Football Players of the Week
Edwards, Allen, Edwards and Shreiner Earn Weekly Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played on Saturday, Oct. 31. Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards was named Offensive Player of the Week while a pair of players from The Citadel, Cortez Allen and Tommy Edwards, earned Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors, respectively. Elon’s Adam Shreiner was honored as Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the conference office.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cortez Allen, The Citadel, Jr., DB
Allen grabbed two interceptions and returned one 82 yards for a touchdown to seal The Citadel’s 28-16 come-from-behind victory over Samford Saturday in Charleston. Allen returned the first of the interceptions, which came early in the fourth quarter, 30 yards to the Samford 5-yard line, setting up a touchdown on the next play to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 21-10. On the ensuing possession, he picked off a Connor Lowery pass at The Citadel’s 18 yard line and returned in 82 yards for a touchdown. Allen’s 112 interception return yards are the second-highest single game total in Southern Conference history. The junior also added seven tackles, including six solo stops.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Tommy Edwards, The Citadel, Fr., QB
True freshman walk-on Tommy Edwards led The Citadel to a second half rally after a 10-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Samford, 28-16, on Saturday. Edwards, who took his first snap in a collegiate game on Saturday, entered late in the second quarter for injured QB Miguel Starks. He completed 10-of-20 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. His long was a 55-yard touchdown pass to Van Dyke Jones that put the Bulldogs on the board near the end of the first half.
Other Nominees: SeQuan Stanley (Wofford), Dominique McDuffie (Appalachian State), Michael Johnson (Western Carolina), Olufemi Lamikanra (Elon) and Joshua Williams (Chattanooga).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Adam Shreiner, Elon, Fr., PK
Shreiner made all six of his kick attempts on Saturday, including two field goals and four PATs, in Elon’s 34-6 win at Wofford. The freshman booted field goals from 36 and 20 yards out, improving to 12-for-15 on the season. He currently ranks fourth in the SoCon and 17th nationally in scoring with 8.4 points per game.
Other Nominees: Sam Martin (Appalachian State), Blake Bostic (Western Carolina), Mike Hammons (Chattanooga), Milford Scott (The Citadel) and Christian Reed (Wofford).

Bobcats Named Southland Offensive, Defensive Players of the Week
Texas State players garner attention after handing Stephen F. Austin its first conference defeat

FRISCO, Texas – Texas State quarterback Bradley George and linebacker Joe Bell were named the Southland Conference offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, after guiding the Bobcats to a 28-7 victory over first-place Stephen F. Austin, the league office announced Monday. Central Arkansas kicker Eddie Carmona was named the conference’s special teams player of the week after kicking four field goals at Southeastern Louisiana.

Offensive Player of the Week: Bradley George, Texas State
Texas State quarterback Bradley George tied a school record with 30 completions and threw for a season-best four touchdowns to lead Texas State to a 28-7 victory over No. 15/11 Stephen F. Austin. The senior from New Braunfels, Texas (Canyon), also recorded his fourth 300-yard passing game of the season with 303 yards. He completed 30-of-41 passes and helped Texas State win its third consecutive Southland Conference game.

Honorable Mention: Tyler Beatty, Southeastern Louisiana; Blake Joseph, Sam Houston State; Marlin Meeks, Nicholls.

Defensive Player of the Week: Joe Bell, Texas State
Texas State linebacker Joe Bell recorded 10 total tackles with five solo stops and assisted on 10 others tackles as Texas State held the nation’s top scoring offense to a season-low seven points. In a 28-7 victory over Stephen F. Austin, the Bobcats allowed the Lumberjacks to convert only one of four tries in the red zone. One of the stops in the red zone came when Bell, a senior from Houston, Texas (Cypress Falls), forced a fumble and the Bobcats recovered on the Texas State 11-yard line. Bell also had 1.5 tackles for losses of five yards.

Honorable Mention: Re’Keem Wilson, Southeastern Louisiana; Matt Kreamer, McNeese State; Will Henry, Sam Houston State.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Eddie Carmona, Central Arkansas
Central Arkansas kicker Eddie Carmona set school record with four field goals in the 25-21 loss at Southeastern Louisiana. The junior from Charleston, Ark. (Charleston), also set the school record for consecutive field goals with 13 straight and hit a career-long 40-yard field goal in the final seconds of the first half. He also connected on 33, 34 and 36 yards against the Lions. This is Carmona’s second special teams player of the week award this season. He previously shared the honor Oct. 12.

Honorable Mention: Michael Capparelli, Sam Houston State; Ben Follis, Texas State; Beau Mothe, Southeastern Louisiana; Beau Lasseigne, McNeese State.

MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY FOOTBALL HONORS
FAMU’s Pulley and S.C. State’s Adams Earn Top Weekly Honors

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., November 2, 2009 – For the second week in a row Florida A&M’s Curtis Pulley was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Week. Phillip Adams of South Carolina State was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Kory Kowalski of Bethune-Cookman earned Rookie of the Week honors while Kendall Noble of Norfolk State earned Offensive Lineman of the Week accolades. Trevor Scott of Florida A&M was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.

Pulley (QB, 6-4, 200, r-Sr., Hopkinsville, Ky.) rushed for a MEAC season best 236 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns in the Rattlers 31-28 win over Morgan State. The run performance tops a previous 196-yard MEAC season top performance also set by Pulley in the season opener versus Delaware State on Sept. 5. Pulley also connected on 13-of-23 passes for 174 yards with a passing touchdown.

Adams (DB, 6-1, 190, Sr., Rock Hill, SC) tallied eight solo tackles with one for a loss of four yards. He also returned a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Bulldogs win over Delaware State. Adams added three broken up passes and spearheaded the Bulldogs defense that limited the Hornets to 87-yards rushing.

Kowlaski (PK, 6-2, 185, Fr., Rockledge, Fla.) scored seven punts, including four extra points and a field goal, in the Wildcats 31-13 win over North Carolina A&T. He also recorded six punts for a 33.8 average with three inside the 20 yard-line, of which two dropped inside the five yard-line.

Noble (OT, 6-4, 292, r-So., Rocky Mount, N.C.) led a dominate effort for the NSU offensive line in a 41-6 homecoming win over Howard. He aided the Spartans with 520 yards of total offense with 294 yards rushing. Noble graded out at 92-percent of his assignments with a season high four pancake blocks.

Scott (PK, 6-2, 200, r-So., Jacksonville, Fla.) nailed a 35-yard field goal in overtime to give Florida A&M a 31-28 win in overtime. He was also a perfect (4-of-4) in extra point attempts and averaged 66 kickoff yards on five kicks with one touchback.

Other Top Performances

Dennis Brown (NSU) threw two touchdowns and ran for another as he recorded a season-high 292 yards of total offense in the Spartans 41-6 win over Howard.
Justin Castellat (NSU) connected on field goals of 27 and 31 yards and made five extra points in the Spartans victory.
Maurice Francois (B-CU) accounted for 158 yards of total offense including 73 yards rushing with one touchdown in the Wildcats 31-13 win over North Carolina A&T.
Josh Harrison (SCSU) anchored the Bulldogs blocking efforts that accounted for 513 yards total offense. He also recorded three pancake blocks and two touchdown creating blocks for S.C. State.
Cameron Houston (FAMU) recorded 10 total tackles, three unassisted, with one and a half for a loss of six yards. He also registered a sack and forced a fumble that halted a Morgan State scoring drive.
George Howard (MSU) produced a game-high 10 tackles, two for an eight-yard loss in the Bears overtime loss to the Rattlers.
Devan James (MSU) rushed 20 times for 133 yards in the Bears loss to Florida A&M.
Ryan Lewis (B-CU) produced a fourth quarter interception return for a touchdown in the Wildcats win. He also tallied six tackles, three solo, with one for a loss of six yards.
Malcolm Long (SCSU) completed 16-of-24 passes for 316 yards with two touchdowns and carried the ball six times for 21 yards with a rushing touchdown in the Bulldogs 52-10 win over Delaware State.
Mike Maloney (DSU) recorded five pancake blocks and helped the Hornets gain 225 yards total offense against the Bulldogs.
Larrone Moore (DSU) recorded a 90-yard kickoff return back for a touchdown in the first quarter in the Hornets loss to S.C. State.
Robert Okeafor (FAMU) produced three pancake blocks and graded out at 90 percent and aided the Rattlers account for 446 yards of total offensive yards in the win over Morgan State.
Eugene Solomon (B-CU) helped the Wildcats account for 365 total offensive yards with 227 yards rushing including four touchdowns.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Harvard junior running back GINO GORDON (Bonita, Calif.) became the first player on record in school history to total 100 rushing and 100 receiving yards in a single game in the Crimson’s 42-21 win over Dartmouth. Gordon tallied 222 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 touches, amassing all of his yardage in three quarters. He rushed for 119 yards on eight attempts (14.9 yards per carry) and had all three of his scores on the ground (eight, 15 and 48 yards) while not losing a yard from scrimmage. Gordon also caught four passes for 103 yards. In all, he averaged 18.3 yards per touch with 10 of his 12 touches resulting in either a first down or a touchdown.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Yale junior defensive back ADAM MONEY (Whiteland, Ind.) made the key defensive plays in the Bulldogs’ 23-22 come-from-behind win over Columbia. Money had a game-saving tackle late in the fourth quarter that stopped the Lions’ Leon Ivery from scoring inside the five-yard line after a 75-yard gain. Yale forced and recoverd a fumble on the very next play at the two-yard line to stop Columbia from what could have been the potential game-clinching touchdown. On the next Columbia series with just over two minutes remaining, he forced a fumble that he recovered at the Yale 49-yard line. Money’s play set up the Elis’ game-winning scoring drive with less than a minute left in the game. He finished the game with five tackles and added 148 all-purpose yards (99 kickoff return yards and 49 punt return yards) on his first day of return duties.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brown sophomore punter NATE LOVETT (East Providence, R.I.) helped control the field position battle by punting eight times for an average of 44.2 yards per punt in the Bears’ 14-7 overtime loss to Penn. Lovett booted a 72-yard punt, the seventh longest punt in Brown football history. Three times he pinned Penn inside its own 20-yard line, including one at the four-yard line.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Harvard freshman running back TREAVOR SCALES (Stone Mountain, Ga.) collected a game-high 120 rushing yards with two touchdowns while finishing with 131 total yards of offense in the Crimson’s win over Dartmouth. His first score came on a 40-yard scamper and he also bullied his way in from one yard out as he averaged 6.0 yards per carry without losing a yard from scrimmage.

Perrilloux earned his fifth OVC Player of the Week honor of the season after throwing for 210 yards and a touchdown and rushing for another score in the 20th-ranked Gamecocks 28-10 road win over Austin Peay. Perrilloux completed 12-of-22 passes including a 34-yard touchdown to Calvin Middleton with 3:12 left in the first half to put JSU up 14-10 at halftime. In the third quarter he scrambled 15 yards for a score with 44 seconds left in the period to put his team up 21-10. During the game Perrilloux went over 4,000 career passing yards with Jax State, as he threw for 200-plus yards for the 15th time in his career. He has reached that mark in 10 of his last 11 starts and now has 36 career touchdowns, third in Gamecock history. Perrilloux leads all of Division I in passing efficiency (180.74).

It marked the third 100-yard receiving game of his career. Benford has now caught at least one pass in all 19 career games and moved up to ninth in TTU history for career receptions.

He ranks 16 nationally in field goals made per game (1.44). Signor also averaged 65.8 yards per kickoff, including a touchdown. Great West Players of the Week from Week No. 9
Southern Utah swept the Great West Football Player of the Week honors on the heels of its 56-35 victory over UC Davis on Saturday, with all three player of the week selections scoring for the Thunderbirds and combining for six TDs. Major Gray scored an SUU record-tying four rushing touchdowns, Colin Pretlow returned an interception 46 yards for a score and Fesi Sitake returned SUU’s first punt return for a touchdown since 2004. SUU got touchdowns from all phases with the Thunderbirds’ additional two scores coming on passes from Cade Cooper to Tysson Poots.

Major Gray scored four rushing touchdowns in the Thunderbirds’ win over UC Davis, tying the Southern Utah record for rushing touchdowns in a game. He carried 16 times for 74 yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. Three of his TDs came in the first half as SUU built a 42-21 lead. Of his 16 carries, eight either went for first downs or touchdowns (or both). Gray has been the team’s lading rusher in five straight games after beginning the season as a situational goal-line back.

Pretlow helped hold UC Davis WR Chris Carter to just 47 receiving yards, his second-fewest of the season (41 vs. Fresno State). In total, Sitake returned three punts 106 yards and had returns of 61, 17 and 28 yards. In addition to the return for a score, another return set the team up on the UC Davis 41-yard line and led to the Thunderbirds’ first touchdown. Patriot League Announces Football Players of the Week
Lafayette's Curley Earns Offensive Honor

Center Valley, Pa. - Lafayette's Rob Curley became the fourth different Patriot League quarterback to earn a weekly award on Monday, as the senior was named Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 35-14 victory over Bucknell on Saturday. The Defensive Player of the Week honor went to Holy Cross' Jimmy Thomas, while Rob Dornfried was named Special Teams Player of the Week from the Crusaders. Fordham's Kevin Heinowitz garnered Rookie of the Week plaudits.

Curley had an outstanding effort on Saturday, completing 30-of-35 passes for 333 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions or sacks in the win over the Bison. He set career highs for completions, attempts and passing yardage. Thomas made a career-high 12 tackles and notched his first two collegiate sacks and a fumble recovery while Dornfried made both of his field goal attempts and all five of his extra point tries in Holy Cross' 41-27 win over Fordham. Heinowitz made each of his field goal attempts and all three of his extra points in the losing effort.

Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week
Rob Curley, Lafayette Sr., QB, 6'1, 200, Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross Curley led Lafayette to a 35-14 win over Bucknell by playing a nearly perfect game on Saturday, completing 30-of-35 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions or sacks. The completions, attempts and yardage marks were all career highs. Curley threw all three of his touchdown passes in the second half as Lafayette scored on its first four possessions to break open a game that was tied at 7-7 at the break. Curley's quarterback rating was 242.9 for the game. The performance came one week after he set a career high with 305 passing yards against Fordham. He has led Lafayette to its best overall start since 1981 with a 7-1 record, and six consecutive victories for the first time since 1992. Lafayette is 3-0 in the Patriot League for the first time since 2005. Curley ranks in the top 20 nationally in passing yards, total offense and completions per game, while leading the Patriot League and placing seventh in the country with a 155.4 pass efficiency rating. He earns his second career Offensive Player of the Week award.

Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week
Jimmy Thomas, Holy Cross So., LB, 6'3, 204, Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding Thomas recorded 12 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery to help Holy Cross hold Fordham to 27 points despite 627 yards of total offense in a 41-27 Crusader victory on Saturday. The sacks were the first of his collegiate career, and Thomas placed second on the team while setting a career high in tackles. He recovered a fumble in the third quarter to set up a Holy Cross touchdown that made the score 34-13.

Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week
Rob Dornfried, Holy Cross Jr., K, 5'8, 176, Berlin, Conn./Northwest Catholic Dornfried earns his first Special Teams Player of the Week award after converting all seven times he kicked the ball in a 41-27 Holy Cross win at Fordham on Saturday. He was 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, hitting from 31 and 20 yards, and also connected on all five of his extra point tries. Dornfried set a career high with 11 points and tied a career best with two field goals made.

Patriot League Rookie of the Week
Kevin Heinowitz, Fordham Fr., K, 5'10, 175, Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills Heinowitz had a strong effort in a loss for Fordham, connecting on both of his field goal attempts and all three of his extra points in a 41-27 defeat to Holy Cross on Saturday. He made field goals of 27 and 30 yards to help Fordham stay within 24-13 at the half. Heinowitz receives his first Rookie of the Week award after earning the Special Teams honor on Oct. 5.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Liberty quarterback Tommy Beecher (Concord, N.C.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Stony Brook defensive back Arin West (Toms River, N.J.) has been selected as the Defensive Player of the Week for games played during Week 9 of the 2009 regular-season, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, Charleston Southern running back Antwan Ivey (Newberry, Fla.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week, while Liberty running back SirChauncey Holloway (Seffner, Fla.) has been selected as The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.

Beecher was nearly perfect in Liberty’s victory over Presbyterian College, as he completed 15-of-17 passes ( =88.2 percent) for 159 yards and two touchdowns. He was responsible for a third touchdown with a 5-yard scamper in the first quarter. Beecher, who entered the game with just one touchdown pass in six previous appearances, finished with a 205.62 passing efficiency rating against the Blue Hose, as well as 169 yards of total offense. His 88.2 completion percentage is the highest by a Big South quarterback in a game with 15-19 completions.

West was a key factor in a Stony Brook defense that held Gardner-Webb to almost 80 yards under its season average on offense, and just 14 points scored. He made 11 tackles (five solo), with eight coming in the first half, including one that held GWU from a first down. In the second half, West recovered a fumble and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown that tied the game at 14-14. On Gardner-Webb’s next series, he forced another fumble that ended GWU’s drive at the SBU 21-yard line. West added a pass break-up on Gardner-Webb’s final drive of the day.

Ivey returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown to put Charleston Southern ahead of VMI, 14-7, early in the second quarter on Saturday – CSU’s first punt return for a touchdown since 2006. It was his only chance to return a kick that VMI gave him, and it was the longest of his 10 career punt returns. Ivey added a 2-yard touchdown run later in the period to give the Buccaneers a 21-14 lead.

Holloway enjoyed a breakout game against Presbyterian College, as he recorded career highs with 12 carries and 99 rushing yards to lead the Flames’ rushing attack. He averaged 8.3 yards a carry, had touchdown runs of 4 and 14 yards, and added a career-long run of 42 yards in the contest. Holloway more than doubled his rushing total of 86 yards entering the game, and posted his second multi-touchdown game of the season.

Valentino was the go-to guy as Dayton stayed unbeaten in PFL play with a 21-14 come-from-behind victory against San Diego, Saturday. Down 14-7 at halftime, Valentino rushed for two second-half touchdowns. He capped an 11-play, 73- yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run to tie the game in the third quarter. Valentino gave Dayton the lead with a one-yard scoring run that capped a nine-play, 61-yard drive. He completed 13-of-33 passes for 185 yards and a first-quarter touchdown. On the ground, he carried the ball 17 times for 107 yards and the two touchdowns. He finished the day with 292 yards of total offense.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Lyon had two interceptions and ran one back for a touch¬down to help Campbell secure a 31-22 PFL victory against Morehead State, Saturday. His interception in the second quarter stopped a Morehead State scoring drive at the Campbell 16-yard line and kept the Camels within a point, 14-13, at halftime. Lyon’s returned his second interception 45 yards for a touchdown for Campbell’s final score, ce¬menting the victory. He also had nine tackles (seven solo) and was the team’s second-leading tackler.

Willets made three field goals for the second consecutive week and kept Campbell close early on in its 31-22 PFL victory against Morehead State, Saturday. He opened the game’s scoring with a 39-yard boot in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Willets booted a career-long 44-yard field goal to narrow the deficit to 14-13 at halftime. His third-quarter, 29-yard field goal gave Campbell the lead again and they would not surrender it. He made all three of his field goals and tacked on a pair of PATs to finish with 11 points. Willets also averaged 57.6 yards on his seven kickoffs.

NEC Football Offensive Player of the Week

Mallory rushed 23 times for 204 yards and three touchdowns to carry Central Connecticut State to its sixth consecutive victory, one that gave the Blue Devils sole possession of first place in the Northeast Conference standings. Mallory scored his third touchdown of the game, a one-yard burst, to put the Blue Devils ahead for good, 28-23, with 00:42 remaining in the third quarter. His 79-yard touchdown run on CCSU’s first play from scrimmage allowed the Blue Devils to take an early 7-6 advantage. On his way to averaging 8.9 yards per carry, Mallory gained no fewer than five yards on 12 of his rushes. While his team dealt Albany its first NEC loss since the 2006 regular season finale, Mallory became the second-leading scorer in CCSU history (184 pts.).

NEC Football Defensive Player of the Week

Rose recorded a team-high 11 tackles (six solo) in Central Connecticut State’s two-point victory over defending NEC champion Albany and was at his best in the fourth quarter. The junior defensive back made his three biggest plays in the final period, including two during Albany’s last possession, to preserve both the lead and CCSU’s undefeated NEC record. With CCSU clinging to a 31-29 advantage in the final minute of regulation and Albany nearing midfield, Rose stopped UA quarterback Vinny Esposito on third down to force a 4th-and-2 at the 50-yard line. Rose then intercepted Esposito on the ensuing play to seal the win. The third-year Blue Devil registered his only tackle for a loss, which led to a three-and-out, on Albany’s first play of the fourth quarter.

NEC Football Special Teams Player of the Week

Clawson provided all the scoring Robert Morris would need in its 9-7 victory over NEC rival Sacred Heart. The junior placekicker converted all three of his field goals attempts (23, 35, 35) to tie his career high as well as RMU’s single-game record. Clawson opened the game’s scoring 1:10 before halftime by sending a 23-yard chip shot through the uprights. Doscher used both his arm and feet in leading Wagner to a double-overtime road win over Duquesne that pulled the Seahawks within one game of first place in the NEC standings. The freshman quarterback accounted for 325 yards of total offense and scored one touchdown in the 23-17 win. Doscher went 23-of-33 passing for 203 yards and recorded his third 100-yard rushing performance this season. He carried 26 times for 132 yards (5.1 avg.). His 18-yard touchdown run gave Wagner a 14-7 lead with 6:21 remaining in the third quarter. Doscher, a four-time NEC Rookie of the Week, rushed twice for 15 yards in the second overtime to set up Jeremy Martinez’s game-winning six-yard touchdown.

CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week - Justin Thorpe, QB, James Madison
Thorpe earns CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week honors after leading James Madison to a 20-8 win on the road over No. 16 Delaware. The redshirt freshman quarterback garnered 304 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in the Dukes’ first conference victory of the season. Thorpe, a Richmond, Va., native completed 11-of-15 passes for a career-high 262 yards and touchdown and rushed 11 times for 42 yards including a 12-yard touchdown. Thorpe and JMU’s offense compiled 229 yards through the air in the second half, helping it outscore the Blue Hens 20-5 over the game’s final 30 minutes.
This was a spectacular performance for Thorpe. Hopefully this was the game will be reminiscent of what's to come.
