CID1990 wrote:One thing that pisses me off about all this is that Federal agencies are going to shut down services selectively to cause the most pain, because it will help the political agenda.

For instance, Natty Parks will shut down the Washington Monument because it will be more visible than shutting down some far less visited site elsewhere.

DHS is going to have less lines both for TSA as well as customs, making for longer waits at the airport on both ends, but they won't cut grants to local law enforcement agencies for toys they neither use nor need.

Believe me, the petulant children in this government are going to make things as painful as they possibly can for solely political reasons. Part of this is because the real disaster would be if Americans realize that the sequester wasnt that bad after all.

Sent from the center of the universe.
Its already started several days ahead of sequester.

DHS releasing illegal immigrants before sequester
DHS releases hundreds of illegal immigrants from immigration jails ahead of budget sequester

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A week before mandatory budget cuts go into effect across the government, the Department of Homeland Security has started releasing illegal immigrants being held in immigration jails across the country, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Tuesday.

Gillian Christensen, an ICE spokeswoman, said ICE has reviewed "several hundred cases" of immigrants being held in jails around the country and released them in the last week. They have been "placed on an appropriate, more cost-effective form of supervised release," she said.

Christensen said the agency's "priority for detention remains on serious criminal offenders and other individuals who pose a significant threat to public safety." She did not say how released immigrants were selected or what jails they were released from.

Tuesday's announcement of jail releases is the first tangible impact of the looming budget cuts for DHS.

The Obama administration has been issuing dire warnings about the impact of the sequestration and DHS
Secretary Janet Napolitano told reporters at the White House Monday that across-the-board cuts would impact the department's core operations, including border security and airport screening operations.

She also warned that DHS might not be able to afford to keep the 34,000 immigration jail beds mandated by Congress. On average last week, there were 30,773 people being held in ICE jails.

"I don't think we can maintain the same level of security at all places around the country with sequester as without sequester," said Napolitano, adding that the impact would be "'like a rolling ball. It will keep growing."

According to the National Immigration Forum, it costs the government about $164 a day to keep an illegal immigrant facing deportation jailed. In a report on immigration detention costs last year the advocacy group said costs for supervised release can range from about 30 cents to $14 a day.

Republicans lawmakers decried the releases Tuesday.
"It's abhorrent that President (Barack) Obama is releasing criminals into our communities to promote his political agenda on sequestration," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte. "By releasing criminal immigrants onto the streets, the Administration is needlessly endangering American lives. It also undermines our efforts to come together with the Administration and reform our nation's immigration laws."

The administration asked for about $1.96 billion for immigration jail operations in the last budget. It amounts to about $5.4 million a day, according to the National Immigration Forum's report.
Christensen said Tuesday that released immigrants will still face deportation proceedings.

That seems odd. If we aren't at capacity right now (if that capacity is 34k) why wouldn't we just do away with the beds that aren't being used right now first and consolidate who is being held and where, rather than releasing people being held in other beds? Do we need to maintain some open beds in case we need to incarcerate a bunch of people in a short time frame?

I want to see how Obama is going to adjust his recreational activity patterns. Will he stop going out and playing golf at the cost of several million dollars per trip? Vacations?

I thought about that the other day when I heard a pundit talk about how much it costs for the President to go out for recreation like golf. Not a proportionately in the grand scheme of things. But when you're telling some Federal employees that make maybe $100,000 per year that they're going to get a $20,000 annual cut you're saying every little bit is important. So are you going to go out and cost the taxpayers millions of dollars to play golf when some people are having their salaries cut by 20% and some other people are maybe even losing their jobs? Or can you manage to give up recreational activities that are going to require using Air Force One, Secret Service details, and other support while this is going on?
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Furthermore, while saying the federal deficit does indeed need to be curtailed, Mr. Bloomberg argued the United States could owe “an infinite amount of money” and there is no specific amount that would cause the country to default.

“We are spending money we don’t have,” Mr. Bloomberg explained. “It’s not like your household. In your household, people are saying, ‘Oh, you can’t spend money you don’t have.’ That is true for your household because nobody is going to lend you an infinite amount of money. When it comes to the United States federal government, people do seem willing to lend us an infinite amount of money. … Our debt is so big and so many people own it that it’s preposterous to think that they would stop selling us more. It’s the old story: If you owe the bank $50,000, you got a problem. If you owe the bank $50 million, they got a problem. And that’s a problem for the lenders. They can’t stop lending us more money.”

Not saying there isn't, but then using that as a basis, what is the point of paying taxes? If spend, spend, spend because "banks and people can't stop loaning us money". Turn the printers on overdrive. Where does "full faith and credit" end?

EDIT: or as some may choose to argue...begin?

I'm sorry Obama is fucking you over. My wife took a 20% pay cut a year ago. You may lose some pay for a period of time but I'm guessing you will go back to your salary when the adults finally take over and settle this. My wife isn't going to get hers back.

Yes, he's a politician, and DSU's questions are valid. Still, Bloomberg's remarks remind me a bit of the criticisms regarding the hand wringing over sequester cuts.

We've been deeply in debt before, the rest of the world and our lenders do need us to stay afloat, and government financing is not the same as household financing.

Thank God I'm a penny-pinching saver [feel free to insert your own substitute adjective ;) ] type who's socked away a nice savings.

I crunched the sequester impact to my paycheck. Right now, after child support (26.6%), the cheap room I rent in VA with utilities incl (13.4%), food at $20/day (10.7%), car (9.2%), loss on upside down pre-divorce home that I rent out at loss (6.0%), fuel to see my sons (4.4%), life insurance (1.9%), and car insurance (1%)...

...I had 26.8% left to do things with my sons, save, invest, support American business, etc.

Sequester will take away 22.0% of my takehome, so I will now have 4.8%.

So there's my personal sequester impact. My takehome after bills is reduced from 26.8% of takehome to 4.8% of takehome. So, essentially, I'm taking an 82.1% cut to my spending money.

Thanks in advance for your sympathy.

I took a 40% compensation hit three years ago and have only gotten back 5% so far. My 401k match went to 0. My stock distributions went to 0. My bonuses went to 0. And I had a 5% and a 15% cut in salary.

The initial cuts were certainly not Obama's fault. But the lack of any significant bounce back is.
