Just glanced at the overall standings. Sheesh, the Padres and Cardinals have fallen off the map. It's looking more and more that with the Braves and Phils pushing each other, the winner of the East will have home field throughout the playoffs. Only Cincy seems a threat at this point, and their schedule is pretty lax the rest of the way.

8 of 9, playing filthy lately. Even Tom McCarthy got into it last night, most excited call I ever heard him make calling Valdez safe at the plate in the 7th.

The Phils were an inning away from being one-hit in the early game. Wheeler provided an interesting stat:

The Phils had been one-hit in just three games from 1994-2009. This year, they have been one-hit in three games, matching the previous 16 seasons combined. :ohno:

At any rate, the Phils could be in sole possession of first place as soon as tonight. C'mon Blanton.

Nice to see Charlie yank Werth after such a boneheaded throw. Granted, it was part of a double switch and the pitching isn't helping matters here in the eighth, but why in hell did he try to make that throw? Phils had a two run lead and his stupidity allows one run to score and the tying run to get in scoring position. :ohno:

Because he's in the last year of his contract and it's distracting him. He doesn't think and he tries to do too much, he's been very disappointing so far this year.

Ah fuck. :pissed:

Madson passed ball for the tying run. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

The Pirates are up 5-0 late over the Braves (rain delay) and the Phils are trying to piss this game away.

C'mon damn it.

This will be a horrible loss, the Phils better pull this one out.

God bless ya, Placido. :notworthy:

Who was the Met fan saying Placido isn't clutch and Werth is the best player on the Phils? This game is Exhibit A for the prosecution.

He's a Met fan, he hasn't seen clutch since 1986. He certainly hasn't seen it since 2007.

It took 99 days, but the Phils are back in first place in the NL East where they belong!

If you check the MLB standing on ESPN they give probabilities for each team to make the playoffs.

Yesterday the second place Phillies were at 74.8%; then they won and moved into first place.

Today the Phillies are at 73.7% :?:

I imagine that is because the Phillies are in a five way battle for the last two playoff spots with Atlanta, San Diego, San Fran and, to a lesser extent, Colorado. As the season continues to get shorter, having that many teams remaining in contention will decrease the probability percentage for the Phils with each passing day. The Giants and Rockies are playing good ball right now. :geek:

It's all coming together, as it normally does for this collection of Phils when September rolls around. The Braves are doing their best Mets imitation. Who would've thought a few weeks ago that the Phils would be the first NL team to 80 wins? Good stuff.

Agreed. I just found it ironic that the Phillies would lose percentage points after a win. Atlanta lost fewer points after a loss; 82.3% down to 82.0%

What is hard to figure is why the Braves chances would be greater than the Phillies. By a significant 8.3% none-the-less. :?

Taking away head to head games between the Braves and Phils, the Braves have the following series remaining:

Cards, Nats, @Mets, @Nats & Fish

Phils have: @Mets, @Fish, Nats, Mets, @Nats

So if we take away each teams' common Nats, @Mets, and @Nats, it leaves us with:

Braves: Cards, Fish
Phils: @Fish, Mets

The Braves have one of the best home records in baseball, so those three extra home games are the likely difference. Plus, the Braves have one more game against the lowly Pirates tonight while the Phils play one more against the more respectable Fish.

It's actually 4 extra home games since the Braves and Cards play 4 this weekend. I think the Phillies have an easier schedule since the Cards are still alive and need to beat the Braves, that could be a very tough series for Atlanta.

I totally agree with you, but I'm sure the algorithm being used to calculate the %playoffs is seeing the Braves' home record (best in all of MLB at 49-19) and giving them a ton of credit for that. The Cards are only 29-40 on the road as well.
