Cops are on the edge already. Contrary to what klean thinks, they aren't on shift looking for a black person to assault. Something precipitated the assault. Justified or not, his behavior brought police into the matter. Even if he hadn't gotten beat up, his behavior caused a scene which resulted in him being beat up. We've all ben drunk and stupid. I've been drunk and questioned by the police. I had enough sense to not mouth off to authority.

The only facts we know at this point are that he is 20, was charged with being intoxicated, and last time I checked you can't be in bars under 21 so he was denied entry. Does that alone warrant an assisted sidewalk faceplant? Doubtful, but I really can't see a cop in a college town with 100+witnesses all carrying iphones and looking for their youtube moment to escalate the encounter to this level without some provocation.

I'll predict that there will be a Virginia investigation, followed by a DOJ review, and this whole thing will go away because they'll determine there was justification.

I've worked the door at several shady establishments in Baltimore. If a guy can't answer what his zip code is, he gets turned away. If he's calm and shows secondary ID to prove the mistake. He gets in. If he's a drunk asshole, I don't even acknowledge his presence. If he persists, he gets a beat down. It's a real simple process. I imagine with the police, its similar, but with more restraint before moving into phase 3.

The arrest record lists Mr. Martese's birth date as 6/17/1994.
