I have no problem with this line of thinking - although top 25 is a bit harsh - top 20 at least.
Nah, just outside Top 15 for EKU.

EKU started only 4 seniors in the close playoff game vs JMU, so they'll be better next yr. Me thinks they lose @ Purdue and maybe one other and go 9-2 and win the OVC AQ. The key for the OVC getting their 1st playoff win this century will be for EKU to NOT get a bye. If that happens think EKU will win one against another #13-20 opening round opponent.
JMU Football:
4 Years FBS: 40-11 (.784). Highest winning percentage & least losses of all of G5 2022-2025.
Sun Belt East Champions: 2022, 2023, 2025
Sun Belt Champions: 2025
Top 25 ranked: 2022, 2023, 2025
CFP: 2025

89Hen wrote: Not really. Only four out of the 19 times was JSU not the SWAC team with the best record:

Grambling 1985 - also went to playoffs and lost
Grambling 1989 - also went to playoffs and lost
Grambling 1990 - both GSU and JSU were 8-3 but JSU was 5-1 SWAC, GSU was 3-3
Southern 1997 - may be the only year you'd have a case, but comparison sake, SU lost 33-3 to FAMU who lost 52-37 in the first round
To steal a bit from Chris Berman... "Nobody, and I mean nobody, circles the wagons on exposing the SWAC's pathetic playoff performances and striking down any ill-fated attempt to sugar coat it, like 89Hen". It's amazing people keep trying to go to the well on this topic.
What's to sugar coat? Any swac fan will admit that. I could put it even more bluntly than he can, I have 30 years of upclose exposure to swac football.

Yeah Grambling and Southern both had teams that could do damage in the playoffs years ago. But the Bayou Classic was too good of an offer to pass up.

But play against one of the other FCS schools now and lose and you will get the tired Tubby Raymond mindset of because we stomped a team today, we would have stomped them 30 years ago. :coffee:
I love Southern but the fact that a subpar Nicholls St owned our best teams wrecks that arguement. Although I would have liked to seen our 95, 97, or 99 teams in the playoffs. Couldn't do much worse in Missoula than Nicholls.

The defensive units for SU those yrs were among the best in 1-AA but as stated before they along with Grambling will not walk away from the financial impact of the Bayou Classic.

Well one thing I can say about the Bayou Classic is because of it I knew who Grambling and Southern were before I knew who most of the rest of the I-AA/FCS schools were.
