I dont know who the guy was that thought this could be solved in court but maybe he missed the news? UND did go to court and the result was 3 yrs to get rid of the nickname. That time is now about over and they have until Aug. 1 or they go back on the hostile and abusive list.

Maybe the guy that says the NCAA doesnt have the power to make a school change its nickname doesnt understand the issue? The NCAA isnt saying change it, they are simply saying they cant use it in NCAA championship events or host NCAA championship events. They arent saying change it.

Maybe they guy who cuts off the counting of NDSU/UND football games on any old arbitrary date forgot that UND quit the series in 2004. The series is in the history books. UND quit. I dont care what games you count, thats a moot point, UND has one of the worst football teams in the FCS and has been on a downward spiral for 7 yrs. Its not getting any better.

Reading some of this stuff might help educate folks in the long history of this issue. There is strong opposition to the use of the name and it has been around for a long time. The "pipe ceremony" they refer to from the late 60s was a concocted PR event meant to silence the critics. This has been going for over 50 years.

If UND goes to the WAC even with BSU leavening they will get killed. IF they were an established Big Sky School with solid recruiting and a stable program like Montana then there might be a chance but UND is no Montana. I hope that UND fans can accept a couple of 1-10 or 0-11 seasons. Trust me it sucks.

University of North Dakota Fighting Suoix
University of Illinois Fighting Illini

Both use their state name coupled with the local Indian tribe.

Why are some people complaining about UND, while I really don't recall anyone complaining about Illinois? It would be pretty hard for the NCAA to justify allowing the Illini or Florida State Seminoles nickname while trying to restrict UND. Even their own rules only apply to some schools, while others seem to be getting no criticism whatsoever.

There were 2 ways to get an exemption

1) Get permission from the local Tribes. The Seminoles did this

2) Get a ruling that the indigenous people referenced in the name are no longer identified as a tribe or independent group. The Aztecs did this.

Most people have little understanding of this issue. The reaction to the issue is often emotional and lacks the perspective of the Native Americans who have opposed its use for many, many years. You have to understand this issue has been debated for over 50 yrs. in North Dakota. Positions have hardened and become bitter. There has been no compromise from UND, they have tried to re-write history to make it seem they have an honorable intent. Their honorable intent is simply patronizing because they had to re-write history to make the claim and then only under tremendous political pressure.

UND has over the years used the image to promote and make money for themselves. All they have offered the Tribes is taxpayer money in the form of classes and programs as part of the curriculum. Nothing UND has done or offered has been from them and they keep the gain for themselves. Right now the NCAA is trapped in merchandizing contracts and is also being used by UND because they wont let the contracts lapse, similar to the scheduling contracts in the WCHA.

Looks like NDSU supporters are making there rounds to all the BSC member's message boards to make the case of why UND should be denied membership. Of course they fail to mention that it was an NDSU graduate who put UND in this position. I honestly cannot fathom why supporters of a school we do not play would be so malicious towards UND. Of course everybody's favorite troll LakeBison is leading the charge, does anybody have a link to the story about him sending a threatening letter to a legislator. I think it's high time we start a campaign to make his life a living hell!

Where does this criteria for "acceptable" use of a nickname come from? Are these for real? Because I'd suspect UND could get the backing of some council of Sioux. But frankly, I don't think that would stop the chorus of people that simply don't like it for whatever reason.

Yes indeed squawker. That is something they should be proud of. Heck, you even brag about it for them!

As you know squawker, a win over NDSU, even if the credit does goes to bill fette, is the biggest win a school can get. It is the highlight of the EWU football history thats for sure.

In a more relevant time frame, its 16-8 NDSU since 1980 squawker, then UND quit playing in 2003. It was a long run of games. It could have been longer but they quit the series 3 times since the 1890s.

Now they are your new best buddies in the Big Sky. Good Luck they are all yours if they dont bolt to the WAC first!
