Re: Confederate Battle Flag Poll
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the flag coming down from the statehouse grounds. But it won't change anything. The NAACP will lift it's boycott of SC which, honestly, has largely gone unnoticed. I don't agree with removing it from Civil War sites AND the graves of Confederate veterans.

It's about heritage... not hate! Right?
Where are all the moderate confederate flag supporters putting an end to this? If the moderates stamped this out 50+ years ago... there wouldn't be as much of a problem with the confederate flag.

Your hyperbole aside, this is exactly why the flag needed to come down.

It's about both. Are you sure you studied history? The American Flag to most is about heritage but I bet some blacks and Indians would disagree.Skjellyfetti wrote:It's about heritage... not hate! Right?

To me, it seems like the ones who have a hard time admitting that it's both are the supporters (on here it seems OLFU is the lone exception). Y'all don't like to admit that it is also about hate.
Unfortunately, because of the decades of hate that the flag has been used for, there's no reason it should fly over the South Carolina capitol.
The flag didn't fly over the South Carolina capitol until the Civil Rights movement was rolling along. Why?
The flag has been used by people as well as governments as a symbol of oppression and as a way to remind the black population of their place in society.
Why not just fly the first flag of the Confederacy - the Stars and Bars (or a host of other flags)? Seems like an easy compromise, no? Though, it seems like compromise is generally impossible these days - so, I'm sure you, like most, will only accept your terms 100%.

I agree. People can't see that whats heritage for one is hate and violence for another. It's hypocritical.Skjellyfetti wrote:I know it's both.Ibanez wrote:It's about both. Are you sure you studied history? The American Flag to most is about heritage but I bet some blacks and Indians would disagree.

The flag was raised on April 11, 1961 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Civil War but most historians say it was raised in defiance of Civil Rights.
However, I have no qualm with flying an official flag at a memorial, at a grave, at a battle field, etc.... I didn't have a problem with it where it was, but others think that removing a symbol will bring upon peace. It won't. It'll probably do the opposite. This was a battle flag (granted, it was created by a Charlestonian). It was hijacked and used to intimidate and spread fear. It should be retired.
Right now, 6 flags fly over Texas. Will that be reduced to 1? Will the seals of Texas and Alabama be redrawn? How about the Georgia state flag that's actually the 1st National Flag of the CSA? When will that change. Or does it not matter since the KKK and other white supremacist don't use it?
Don't be quick judge. A compromise doesn't mean I get 100% of what I want. That's the opposite of the compromise. I'm fine with the monument. The flag doesn't really add anything. However, removing the flag from Civil War sites, from the gift stores, graves of Confederate veterans and dead is too much. Wanting to remove a statue of John C. Calhoun and renaming streets is ridiculous. It's reactionary which will solve nothing. It won't provide closer. It'll white wash our history.
So,you're wrong. I'm all for compromise when it's appropriate (like removing the flag) but for the complete erasure of our history, no. I will not compromise. The ONLY compromise would be for all traces of our evil past be erased. That includes the Churches that justified slaves, the monuments, streets, cities, etc... of Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, etc... We can't pick and choose who does and doesn't offend us. Why not create a new American flag since that flag fought to preserve slavery and committed untold acts of genocide on Indians?

1) flying flags is free speech. as much as I would prefer that the 20 toothless klukkers in SC and a democrat senator from WV did not turn it into a hate symbol - it is still their right to do so
2) you are a disingenuous little sh1t - nobody is going to go for the stars and bars and you damn well know it. The Citadel has Big Red - a red version of the SC flag which was flown by the cadet battery during the opening shots of the war. There are already calls for it to go because it is associated with the Confederacy- irrespective of the fact that next to nobody would recognize it and it has not been used by hate groups
so stop talking out of your ass about compromises- you'd be the first one on here posting charts and graphs the minute the stars and bars went up in any public place

Let us also call for the dismantling of Clemson University, the site of John C. Calhoun's plantation.

The obvious solution to the race problem is to get rid of all the Blacks. If they didn't get their panties in a bunch about things, then we'd all get along.
Oh, and get rid of all the analjelly folks...they get too upitty, too.
Damned shame they just can't behave properly.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't have a right to fly the flag.CID1990 wrote:

I'm saying that it shouldn't be flown on the grounds of the state capitol.
I know you hate nuance.... but, there is such a vast chasm between what you are claiming I'm advocating for and what I'm advocating for... I really hope you can see it.
Eh, there may be calls for it - but, I have absolutely no problem with that flag. And, I'd be willing to bet that the Citadel isn't forced to take down "Big Red" anytime soon.CID1990 wrote: 2) you are a disingenuous little sh1t - nobody is going to go for the stars and bars and you damn well know it. Again, I have no problem with that flag.

6 flags fly over Texas. The one representing the Confederacy is the 1st National flag. I have no problem with that. Like I said before.Ibanez wrote:Right now, 6 flags fly over Texas. Huh? I don't know what you're getting at with the seals of Texas and Alabama. Neither of them are at all controversial. So, no they shouldn't be redrawn.

And, yeah - I have no problem with the Georgia flag either. As I've said several times in this thread - I have no problem with the Stars and Bars and that seems like a perfectly rational compromise - you can have your heritage without so much history of hate.

All I've done is agreed that the flag should not be flown at state capitol buildings.
I think John C. Calhoun was an idiot and a dickhead... but, I have no problem with a statue to him or a street named after him.
