Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the flag coming down from the statehouse grounds. But it won't change anything. The NAACP will lift it's boycott of SC which, honestly, has largely gone unnoticed. I don't agree with removing it from Civil War sites AND the graves of Confederate veterans.

The flag was raised on April 11, 1961 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Civil War but most historians say it was raised in defiance of Civil Rights.

However, I have no qualm with flying an official flag at a memorial, at a grave, at a battle field, etc.... I didn't have a problem with it where it was, but others think that removing a symbol will bring upon peace. It won't. It'll probably do the opposite. This was a battle flag (granted, it was created by a Charlestonian). It was hijacked and used to intimidate and spread fear. It should be retired.

Right now, 6 flags fly over Texas. Will that be reduced to 1? Will the seals of Texas and Alabama be redrawn? How about the Georgia state flag that's actually the 1st National Flag of the CSA? When will that change. Or does it not matter since the KKK and other white supremacist don't use it?

Don't be quick judge. A compromise doesn't mean I get 100% of what I want. That's the opposite of the compromise. I'm fine with the monument. The flag doesn't really add anything. However, removing the flag from Civil War sites, from the gift stores, graves of Confederate veterans and dead is too much. Wanting to remove a statue of John C. Calhoun and renaming streets is ridiculous. It's reactionary which will solve nothing. It won't provide closer. It'll white wash our history.

The ONLY compromise would be for all traces of our evil past be erased. Why not create a new American flag since that flag fought to preserve slavery and committed untold acts of genocide on Indians?

1) flying flags is free speech. as much as I would prefer that the 20 toothless klukkers in SC and a democrat senator from WV did not turn it into a hate symbol - it is still their right to do so

2) you are a disingenuous little sh1t - nobody is going to go for the stars and bars and you damn well know it. The Citadel has Big Red - a red version of the SC flag which was flown by the cadet battery during the opening shots of the war. There are already calls for it to go because it is associated with the Confederacy- irrespective of the fact that next to nobody would recognize it and it has not been used by hate groups
