That video is just a solicitation for Google investment.
There's no question about it, the technology will make mistakes and people will die from it. That said, I bet you WAY less people will die from self-driving cars than from human error (aka. what we have now).

Plus when a software mistake is discovered, it can be immediately updated. No such luck with people.
Doesn't matter. One person steps off a curb and gets hit by a Google car and the experiment is over.

Really..? Why..?
Google cars have been driving in East Bay (SF) and Seattle for 4 years now - all over both cities...
If you get hit just like any car accident, go ahead litigate away (it changes nothing) win or lose the case, make thousands of dollars or whatever it's only money

Oh and all Google cars have 360 degree cameras rolling all the time... so make sure it's NOT your fault... you're on candid camera

I'm sure they've encountered all of those things in the 100,000 test miles they've driven so far...

Drive it? Throw variables at it? There are fake towns set up for all sorts of training. Why not use something like that? Have it drive on a smooth surface, then approach a "work crew". Simulate high winds, heavy run, black ice, snow, stopping short, being cut off, etc....
And that's my point...you would need to simulate traffic on both slower-moving roads and on interstates. The number of scenarios you would need to test it seem endless and it seems like it could get really expensive.
Driving has billions of variables. I know computers are amazing things capable of almost anything but to me there are WAY to many variables to make this viable until every car on the road is a google car and there are "google check points" updating road conditions/hazards/etc... every 50 feet on every road.

This technology works great on tractors where you drive straight with no obstacles and then turn and then drive straight again. An open road just seems too daunting.

The amount of money that will have to be spent on beta testing, patches, updates, etc... is going to make this infinitely more cost prohibitive than a tesla.

They're insuring middle aged smoking crack addicts with heart disease now so why not?

Nothing a little government FIAT can't handle

Can you program these cars to intentionally hit things? Like groundhogs. I intentionally go after those fuckers because they eat my fields of rye and barley on the farm.

I love how on this forum over the period of a few dozen posts we think we've thought of and figured out all the pitfalls of this 14 year old Google project...

We should probably write them a letter and let them know "we've got it all worked out" for them

over 700 thousand driverless miles have been driven in Google cars
500 thousand miles on PUBLIC STREETS

The cars are insured (obviously)

they are far far safer than human drivers - by a shocking magnitude...

All I'm just saying that these things are a longer way from being practical than Google is letting on.

I would think in your career are you have at least some programming experience and know how easy it is to overlook something.

Computers are vastly superior to people in how fast they can process information, but they can't use common sense that even the vast majority of people have.

What types of roads have they been tested on? Freeways at a less busy hour of the day? Or have they actually made trips across cities?
