Nope, keep spending on the military its better than the alternative

Remember the money they "save" if they ever do "cut spending" will just be spent on welfare and education so its a complete waste of money. Keep blowing it on cool stuff in the military, and cut back on welfare and education. Those are the real money pits.

The Marine Corps, save for being partner to this Joint Strike Fighter debacle, should be a model for how the military can operate on a leaner budget. I'm not going to rehash everything that has been discussed in other threads ad nauseum, but the Marine Corps gets by just fine on Cobras when the Army "needed" Apaches. The Marine Corps gets by just fine with Hueys still where the Army "needed" Blackhawks.

When Marines travel, they look for the cheapest government or otherwise available lodging and stay there. Conversely, when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Air Force personnel routinely got waivers from staying at Camp Pendleton lodging because it was "subpar" and they stayed at hotels off base for double or triple the price.

When I was a Marine, we lived in barracks and ate in mess halls that were sometimes 50+ years old. I got out and went to work as a civilian in construction contracting on an Air Force Base and I see the Air Force tearing down barracks that were twenty years old and building new ones (for the limited number of Airmen who even live on base - most draw BAH and go off base). The new construction on Air Force bases would sicken most people. Meanwhile, I am now working on a Marine Corps Base again, where the General's HQ Building was built probably before Hoover was President, and the building I work is considered fancy because it was built in 1996. The fanciest building of all on the base is... you guessed it... the Navy Hospital.

If our military were a defensive force we wouldn't even need the Marine Corps. There really isn't much these days that they're useful for. Dump the marines and use the money for special ops forces and we'd save a lot of money. :coffee:

That's odd. I do believe the Founding Fathers assembled a Continental Army, Navy, and Marine Corps to conduct an insurgency, did they not?

Yes they did. Did I call for eliminating any of these? They were against foreign entanglements. Would certainly have been against the world's largest military.

Just that you get people that the minute you propose trimming ANYTHING from the military, they act like it is the end of the world, when they are the only branch that has had a blank check for 60+ years.

You do realize that DoD has been getting hacked and slashed for the past 25 years, no? I have no problem with smart reduction, but most of that was accomplished in the first several rounds of BRAC. Your 60 year comment is ludicrous.

Every knee jerk comment you make about a military blank check can be turned right around on entitlements. What nobody considers when pounding their fists like a child is the value that both provide.

    1) I actually have to produce a product (seriously imagine that)
    2) That in turn has to function to posted specification levels (Again, I'm not kidding)
    3) And ultimately land within budget (I know that seems ridiculous doesn't it)

Social Security - we pay for it. It has a surplus, and can be solvent for the next 100 years with a couple easy and simple fixes.

Medicare/Medicaid - 60% of the program is self-funded (ie premiums on plans, medicare taxes, etc. So $200 billion comes from general revenue, which is less than the cost of one year of Iraq did.
