I'd go immediately into self employment, make the wife buy the furniture with her own damn money, and use mine to grow my business. That answer does not work in this case of comparing your situation to the government. Your wife's "own damn money" does not exist at the government level. The closest thing is to print more money and that is not a good way to fund something that government can't afford.
Using your money to "grow your business" has no relation to the government either.
