All I know is a bunch of maybe's- maybe Coble or Hunter for mop up, maybe one of the 3 true Fr in case Thorpe goes down to injury. Like 99% of the rest of the JMU fans, I won't be watching any practices- will just be reading what's reported in the media and the JMU board and what MM and Durden say.Purple Reign wrote:Well BDK, what would you suggest doing about the backup QB problem?
DNR article yesterday A Rookie No. 2?
Durden said the preference is to redshirt, but this season likely won't be possible to redshirt all 3. As far as which one it will be: Taylor (6'1", 185) from Newark, DE was hinted at as being the more likely one, as his skillset is the one most suited to run JMU's current offense. Birdsong (6'4", 220), from Matoaca (Richmond area) , and Fisher (6'6", 245) from Brunswick, Md., are pocket passers that JMU would have to tweak offense for.
Durden quotes:
“We wouldn’t even go there until we evaluated those freshmen. Coach [Mickey Matthews] would want to see who’s ready. And if one of those guys is ready, we’ll get them ready [to play in a game]. When you get 40 percent of the reps, you can get ready.”
“I think the fact that the kid from Delaware has a little more running ability and escape-ability would make — Taylor Reynolds — but who knows? But I think he’s probably played more football than the other two.”
“I think you just kind of limit your package, and that was one of the good things Coach instituted last year is we were still in the gun; it’s all read, but we have the ability to get it to different players. As opposed to the quarterback being a runner, we can hand it to a receiver going behind them or whatever. … People have gotten really good at defending zone reads, so you’ve got to come up with new ways of how to do it.”
“Dae’Quan, we can always do what we did with him in the last two games of last year, the previous year. He can always step in and do that, and he’s going to be a wildcat-type guy. I think you need a guy that is a little bit of passing threat as well, and I’d say Coble, right now — Quintin just because he knows the offense and he’s kind of a coach on the field, but he’s never taken a snap with us. I would say Andre Coble right now, and Coach and I haven’t visited about that.”
“It’s pressure on, No. 1, Justin to stay healthy. You’ve got to think about that, and then bring those young kids along slowly as fast you as can.”
Article mentioned:
-True soph Coble took some snaps last season and this spring. Didn't throw a pass in a game, but like Scott and Hunter, he was a high school quarterback.
-Of course preference is to keep DQ at RB, as he avg over 100 ypg rushing last season.
-Quintin Hunter will be a Sr (I think that is wrong- he should be a rJr since he DNP last season and had a redshirt to use after missing last season with the torn Achilles tendon). Said he's never taken a snap at QB but is listed as possibility because of his knowledge of the offense.
