At our monthly ASCE luncheon, we had an economist give his run down on the situation. Basically the current “recovery” is lagging significantly behind any other historical recovery following a recession. He also pointed out the unemployment rate is dropping both because there are new jobs opening (albeit at a much slower rate than where it historically should be) and because of people who “stop looking for work.” I recall he also said the new jobs are just barely enough to sustain new folks entering the labor force and basically a shit ton more jobs need to open to get a full recovery going.
PS: I haven’t read this thread yet so this might have been talked about.

Hornet,
What many people fail to comprehend is the notion that "this" economy is vastly different than economies of the past. It is ever changing, as are the solutions to its fix. America and the world are ever-evolving and new challenges arise every dark, if not every hour. Our population and that of the world increases, morphs and undulates constantly, so nothing is ever easy to peg.
Obama is doing no better than any Conk who would do in his stead. Some of the challenges are old, many are new. We tend to discount change and, instead, compare events and problems to those that happened in the (sometimes distant) past. See all the Conks talking about how FDR "ruined" everything. He didn't ruin a damned thing. He had to react as he saw fit given the cards he was dealt. Obama is, too.
Conks want a return to the past, when there were 150 million people in the US and minorities were either beat down or were, at best, discounted. But, the past is filled with potholes and land mines. We need to learn from the mistakes to move ahead. Does Obama have all the answers? Fuck, no. Is he at least trying to do something? Hell, yes.
I've pointed out here a couple of times that the difference between Obama and Conks who chose not to run this year is that he, at least, has the courage to try something. For that, he takes broadsides every day from Conks. Why didn't Chris Christie run? I'd guess it's because he had no answers for the problems and didn't want to absorb the spears. Same with Palin. If they REALLY had solutions, the azzholes woulda run, right?
Good theater, but Obama is doing just fine. Conks HATE that.
My opinion only.

I get what you’re sayin Cap, but I don’t agree with most of it. Obama had the opportunity to look at the example FDR set and had he followed it we would be in much better shape than we are. Instead of investing taxpayer dollars in markets with high multipliers (infrastructure projects for example), he has chosen to throw money at areas with 0 or negative economic multipliers in the form of handouts (increased unemployment beneys that do nothing to get the economy going, cash for clunkers, housing kick-downs, etc). Add on his broke dick energy policies and other shit that hinders business expansion and you get the mess we are currently in. I agree he doesn’t have all the answers, but he could have done a better job had he put down the Partisan crack pipe and reached across the aisle to get shit done. There is plenty of blame to go around and it doesn’t all fall at his feet. I feel that had government got the fuck out of the way (this goes for both Repubs and Dems), everyone would have been better off by now.

Your numbers show an increase of 80% over 3 years. Do you really believe corporate earnings have increased by 80% during that period? They haven't. In other words, the market is overvalued.
Tell us about the head and shoulders pattern again, Uncle Knob.

Foreign money has no place else to go since Europe went into the tank and the ECB can no longer try to replace the U.S. dollar with the Euro as the global reserve currency.houndawg wrote:Foreign money wants to come to 'merica.CitadelGrad wrote:

The head & shoulders pattern did exactly what I said it would do. It preceded an 8% decline in the S&P 500.
