Back to weak schedules, they do have financial advantages but D2 and lower divisions don't count toward playoff eligible wins. Thats why its not fair to say its ok because FBS teams schedule FCS. Those games count for the FBS. Thats the difference between say NDSU playing Kansas or Minnesota and MSU playing say Minot State.Bison fans were treated (or some say suffered) thru the Red Turf at Eastern Washington in last year’s FCS Quarterfinals. Jeff wrote earlier this week that Brock Jensen is still having a tough time dealing with the ending of that game, which ended on a fumble call, and some say it was tough to see where the ball came out against the red turf. (I say the only ones that dont see it have a blind spot)
You would think that any other college football team to introduce a different colored field wouldn’t go over well in the Bison football offices, with 2 replay calls that were controversial and both were tough to tell between the red field and the football(both calls incidentally went against NDSU) Several players I spoke with said they were not fans of the “Inferno”. It might be smart scheduling for a BSC team to play NAIA, D3 or D2 teams at home because it is just too expensive to pay the travel costs for OOC FCS teams.
NDSU has a nice thing going with the East Coast. Costs are reasonable and we are picking up counter games, stronger and more interesting football than the available D2s and good exposure back east where it counts.
In time NDSU may have to do this too. Scheduling for home games gets tough, as we learned in D2. Fortunately there are a lot of good D2 programs in the area that are also legacy North Central Conference teams. They should draw well. Im sure UND isn't calling any of them because they are strong programs and they already have their hands full with the University of Sioux Falls and the "Dead in the Shed" game. They trail that series 0-1.
Just like NDSU went into Washington Griz as a D2 squad and beat them, some of these D2s and lower division teams will start notching some wins in the BSC too. At that point it may not look so good to schedule like this but until that time comes it may be the only thing these BSC schools can afford?
