I said what you said when I said it. But with more emphasis on the fact that they were not THE talk. Sheesh.
Anyways, I can think of a few teams in flyover states that people were prolly talking about more than they were the Astros.
Cubs
Indians
Cardinals

Yeah, I would think you could throw in the Dodgers, Nationals, Mets, Yankees and Red Sox into that list easily. Astros are way down on the attention list in MLB. Cripes, they're way ahead of the rest of the pack, but all I hear about is Judge and the Yankees, the Dodgers, what's wrong with the Cubs, etc... I honestly can't think of the last time I've heard the Astros mentioned on sports talk around here. I'm not kidding.bandl wrote:Did I stutter?Gil Dobie wrote:

Yeah it's almost like sports media is a business and they talk about the things that will make them the most money.89Hen wrote:Yeah, I would think you could throw in the Dodgers, Nationals, Mets, Yankees and Red Sox into that list easily. Talking about the Dodgers instead of the Astros in DC makes money how?Grizalltheway wrote:Yeah it's almost like sports media is a business and they talk about the things that will make them the most money.89Hen wrote: Yeah, I would think you could throw in the Dodgers, Nationals, Mets, Yankees and Red Sox into that list easily. Most people in DC can presumably find LA on a map, and the Dodgers are one of the marquee teams in MLB.89Hen wrote:Talking about the Dodgers instead of the Astros in DC makes money how?Grizalltheway wrote: Yeah it's almost like sports media is a business and they talk about the things that will make them the most money.

That still doesn't make money for my local sports talk station. They talk about other teams that might be interesting to the listeners here. The point was that Gil claimed the Astros were the talk of MLB. They aren't interesting to folks here and they're not even in the conversation, but I do hear about a lot of other teams.Grizalltheway wrote:Most people in DC can presumably find LA on a map, and the Dodgers are one of the marquee teams in MLB.89Hen wrote: Talking about the Dodgers instead of the Astros in DC makes money how?

I don't know where you guys get your baseball news, but I've been hearing how good the Astros were going to be in the future for the last 3 or 4 years. That was before they beat the Yankees in the first round of the 2015 playoffs.

Re: 2017 MLB Thread
Sure. But they weren't THE talk of baseball, as you said earlier. Not by a long shot.Gil Dobie wrote:I don't know where you guys get your baseball news, but I've been hearing how good the Astros were going to be in the future for the last 3 or 4 years. Perhaps you're not clear on the meaning of "the" here when you state "the talk of baseball".
BTW, this whole semantics discussion is pretty much ridiculous and part of the reason this site rules

Local sports talk and ESPN. If I were an actual huge baseball fan, I'd probably go to MLB geek sites and maybe I'd get info on the Astros.Gil Dobie wrote:I don't know where you guys get your baseball news, but I've been hearing how good the Astros were going to be in the future for the last 3 or 4 years. Re: 2017 MLB Thread
MLB network, Fox and ESPN carry Yankees and now the Cubs more than anyone else. MLB said when they originated they would carry a good balance of all the clubs, but they reneged on that. I would like to see more of Astros, Brewers and other good teams other than Yankees and Cubs.

OK, it's the second half, and the Phillies still suck.
