Howard Porter and vacated NCAA wins, illegal mass use of free phone cards, doing cocaine prior to a Final Four game. Glass houses, man, glass houses. There's plenty of bad actors in college sports. Think of it this way, though, we're all spared the potential drudgery of seeing a merely average Syracuse team play post season ball this year. We're all winners in that regard then. :thumb:
When you have to reference an issue (Porter) from over 40 years ago you might be a hater. :x

But serioulsy, don't you think the coaches should be the ones that pay the price? It would be more effective than self imposed sanctions in a year that they might not have even made the tourney.
Pretty sure Jay Wright was there on one of the phone card scandals. It's hard to keep track of which one, though.

Oh, I agree, if the coaches did the wrong doing, they should be the ones to suffer, whether it be suspensions or fines. I do think the purposes of sanctions on post season play and the like are to hit at the boosters who may work behind the scenes to cause the violations - the biggest hit to them is to have their precious favorite team not make the tourney.

The 'Cuse thing is kinda messed up - they knew sanctions would come eventually, and they've always planned for this year to be the one to take the hit - good class coming in next year. Because the NCAA's been dragging their feet 'Cuse was worried that it would spill over into next year, so that's why they voluntarily took the hit this year. I mean, certainly don't want a sanction to hurt if you can avoid it hurting. :coffee:

Also note that the NCAA can impose additional sanctions on top of the self-imposed ones. You don't get to definitely name your punishment. That is just the minimum.

As for punishing coaches, if they were involved, they should be punished (see Jim Tressel for one of the few times when this was done - though his was for lying during the investigation). As Gannon Fan said though, you need to punish the program because otherwise boosters and others can get cause an "unfair" advantage that the NCAA would not be able to control for certain major infractions.

Well, in Syracuse's defense, the NCAA has really dragged their feet on this as well. You can't have an effective sanctioning system if you're going to be so delayed in doing the investigation and imposing the sanctions. This has been held over 'Cuse's head for awhile now and that can have ripple effects over many recruiting classes rather than just finishing the work and delivering the sanction. The NCAA hasn't looked particularly good for a while now.

Well, now that the NCAA has finally weighed in on Syracuse and their bad behavior, granted about a decade after most of it happened, when does the hammer drop on UNC for their 30-some years of academic cheating?

Amazing. When this last post was made I'm sure most of us thought NC would be out of this year's tournament, but it appears as the Heels will be able to make their run at the championship. No action is supposed to be levied until April or May now.

I guess Pitino and Louisville are safe until 2017.
