Neither thrilled nor displeased since I have no idea how this hire will work out. He appears to be a good coach and will add some needed fire to the offense at Montana. So I will expect the best.

You only have to 'follow the money' to determine how the "top head coaching job in FCS" went to a former DII coach. The pool of candidates was bound to be impacted with the Montana starting base salary at $175,000. With potential perks it is probably maxed out somewhere shy of $250,000. That is not chump change but it is well short of what other Universities do offer. There are other DII coaches with superior records but with baggage. The administration went with the perceived safe choice of a solid coach with no apparent flaws.

Because of the facilities, fan support, and relative prestige I suspect the school does get more applicants than the dollar amounts would warrant. Yet Montana will always face the dilemma of seeing our successful coaches move on to greener pastures. Then the process begins again; Find a FBS assistant who'll take less money to get the "head" coach title, or find a promising head coach from the smaller divisions who is ready to move up.

JMU's old HC Mickey Matthews who was fired Nov 2013 was making 225k base, 250k with perks. New HC Withers has a 5 year contract at 325k a year, probably around 350k with perks. I believe he is the highest paid of all of I-AA.

Coaches are public employees, and we don't exactly have a huge tax base with which to fund a salary much higher than that. Unfortunate, but it is what it is.

I also think Stitts reputation among his peers was also a big factor. He, to say the least, was well recommended or so I hear.

Baldwin had one year of head coaching experience at DII CWU when Eastern hired him and no prior connections to A.D. Bill Chaves. As Victor suggests, there's much more to it.

That's an excellent point...you can't pass on a guy because he was successful on a lower level...Imagine if Navy had passed on Johnson or Ohio State on Tressel just because they were FCS guys...

That Baldwin is a hell of a coach. You can see what an impact a great HC can have on a program. Hopefully for EWU they can keep him for as long as humanly possible.
