They're still in high school. And I'd like to know how many times you've seen a curve actually RAISE the grading scale.

Says the guy who paints all teachers with the same 'broad brush.' :kisswink:

Nope, not a 'professional' college instructor.... and I did say 'average,' meaning there are plenty of good students out there and there are plenty of bad students out there surrounding the 'average'. As an instructor, I'm trying to treat all students equally and don't prejudge any of them based on preconceived notions. I treat them all like their going to do their best and I'm going to spend the same amount of time and give the same effort in instructing someone who wants to be there as I will a lazy kid who could give two shits about the class and is just there because they have to be. I'm hoping that something I say or do while instructing them will spark something in them, but the cold truth is that a good number of these kids don't care, won't retain the information and will just memorize what they need to get the grade. Sorry if that's contrary to your preconceived notions.

Like I said Z, when was the last time you visited the bastion of academia? I'm not an old guy yet like you Z, I still hang around with these students as a peer and know what they think about school, not what they tell you when their teacher flunks them.

Again, I'm not a professional instructor, I'm actually teaching because I want to learn how to do it better... so I don't consider myself a professional at it. So in regards to your question, I couldn't tell you how many times a bell curve has raised grades, but I would say if anything, the majority of grades being raised are from D to C or C to B.

Let's get real for a minute: most college instructors are there because it's an easy job with lots of time off and you get to be around/sleep with college hotties all the time. You can't bullshit a bullshitter...I've seen the movies, dude. :thumb: :notworthy:

I just finished my masters.

And I'm calling bullshit on your backpedal regarding preconceived notions of students---you make ANOTHER buch of rash generalizations in the above post. :kisswink:

And I never said ALL teachers did that--only that using a curve is an easy way out of a teachers inability to get the material across to the classroom. I had many, many teachers who were terrific, and very few graded on a curve. But using the "curve" to make students performance look better than it actually was is a crutch. Either you know the material or you DON'T know the material, and to lay the fault of that purely on the student is BS.

Doesn't matter. To get one you actually have to have a Bachelors Degree, which you don't have because you never attended class.

Backpedal? Rash generalizations about how I work as an instructor? Nope. I still think a good number of students are shitty and don't care. Did I change that in the post above? I just clarified my stance as an instructor, saying that I wouldn't cast them to the side because they don't care.

I don't lay fault solely on the students (plural) as a whole, but yeah, I will lay the fault on a student (singular) who doesn't turn in work, misses class, etc. There just happens to be a lot of the singular forms out there. The system is messed up in some cases, I agree with you on that, and there are definitely bad teachers (see the shit that went down in ATL public schools recently).

I don't like curves either, never said I did anywhere. Just clarifying what they are, that they're 'arcane' IMO. I also believe you missed the point that teachers, for the most part, aren't the ones who decide to give a curve. Generally at the collegiate level, curves are given based off the department requirement to do so.

Moot point, IMO. There's no reasonable comparison between a progressive tax code and and GPA.

I disagree. GPA, like income is determined by heredity, ability, application and environment. In both instances people are being asked to give up some of what they have earned to help others. The difference comes in that we are conditioned to think this is good when pertaining to income, but are not conditioned to think that way when pertaining to GPA.

I support a progressive tax structure as well, but the difference is in the amount of income the government should be taking from one individual to give to another. During the 1930's in the Great Depression, the Federal Government raised the top tax rates and it proved to be counter productive.

While I'm not saying we don't have to address both the revenue and expenditure side of the equation in our current mess, the point is that we have been conditioned to think it is ok to take the result of financial gain from one person to give to another, but not other accomplishments. Ask yourself why that is?

Disagree all you want, you're wrong.

GPA is a non-transferrable, permanent record of achievement. Take away GPA points and you graduate with a permanantly lowered GPA with all the ramifications that this would impart for future income, internship opportunities and job prospects. Comparing the fluid dynamics of income with GPA is absurd, as was the supposed "study"... a page out of the O'Keefe-Breitbart playbook.
Neither my earned income nor my grades are yours to take.

If you wish to be generous with your own resources, please do so, but do not steal from others to satisfy your personal need to redistribute income.

I, for one, think that progressive taxation is not justified or legal or ethical. It certainly is not outlined in the Constitution.

However, the deeper issue that is not addressed is whether or not income redistribution leads to societal health. Sweden and Norway and Denmark have very high societal health.

It depends on what you value and status in society. If you value societal health, then you will prefer the Swedish system. If you are already rich, chances are you will find progressive taxation highly questionable.

It gives Congress the power to lay and collect taxes.

They can do that in any matter they so desire that doesn't violate another part of the Constitution.

No, jellyfetti, it gives them the right to collect taxes. It does not spell anything out about PROGRESSIVE taxes or more broadly the manner of taxation.

How about a REGRESSIVE tax code? The poorest pay 50%, the middle class pays 35%, and the upper class pays 15%.

I think you get my point.

It doesn't just give them the power to collect taxes. It also gives them the power to LAY taxes... i.e. to determine the manner of taxation.

They are able to tax in any way they so choose that doesn't violate another section of the Constitution.

If you don't like the way they decide to tax, vote 'em out.
alvin kayak wrote:How about a REGRESSIVE tax code? The poorest pay 50%, the middle class pays 35%, and the upper class pays 15%.

And, if Congress decided to do that... they would be within their right to do so. It would be dumb because they would just be voted out and it would revert back to its previous rate...

But, Congress would be well within its right to LAY a REGRESSIVE tax burden on us.
