Actually I think the problem here is that the media have to walk on eggshells because about 40% of the population is waiting to pounce on them. I was home today and had MSNBC on all day. Obviously that's a left leaning network. But the basic message conveyed all day was accurate. It was: There is a Buzzfeed story saying Trump told Cohen to lie to Congress, We have not confirmed it is true. No other news organization has confirmed it is true. Here are some reasons why it seems to fit some other things. Here are some reasons to be skeptical about it. If it is true it would be very serious. They talked about the checkered background of one of the Buzzfeed reporters. They talked about elements of the story that didn't seem likely.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. One could say they talked about it too much but it's a 24 hour news station. That's going to happen. But I did not see them say anything inaccurate all day. That 40% of the population, however, is going to say "SEE THE LIBERAL MEDIA GOT IT WRONG BECAUSE THEY HATE TRUMP" when, in reality, one media entity that is not among the leaders in that universe was apparently wrong to at least some extent.

And the "some extent" part is important. The Special Counsel's Office statement was very vague. If I say, "I caught a lot of fish, 31 crappie and 7 largemouth" and in reality I miscounted and had 30 crappie along with 8 largemouth I was not accurate. But I caught a lot of fish and the basic impression I created was pretty close. Buzzfeed is standing by its story and asking the Special Counsel's office to be specific about what's not accurate. The Special Counsel's office is not going to do that. But the Special Counsel's office did not say, "We don't have evidence to say Trump told Cohen to lie." It did not dispute the basic point of the story and it's quite possible for the basic point of the story to be correct while the story is not completely accurate.

Time will tell.

It's kind of a guess but I think most people Trust the media more than Trump. The latest poll I could quickly find on it is from September:

However, a problem is illustrated by the distribution of answers to this question:

Who do you trust more to tell you the truth about important issues: President Trump
or the news media?

72% of Republicans said they trusted Trump more while only 12% said they trust the media more. I'm sorry, but if you trust Trump to tell you the truth about important issues more than you trust the news media you are an idiot. You either have no critical thinking skills or you have suspended them.

Fortunately, I guess, Independents trusted the media more by 54% to 27%. I say "I guess" because having 27% of ANY group think they can trust Donald Trump to tell them the truth about ANYTHING is disturbing. Even if you think you can only trust the media to tell the truth 50% of the time 50% is greater than 0%.

The most intelligent distribution of responses was, of course, provided by Democrats. They trusted the news media more than Trump to tell the truth by 89% to 1%. Serendipity borne of opposition, perhaps. But it's consistent with the fact that Trump can be trusted to tell the truth 0% of the time.

Actually the Mueller team statement was worded in a way that leaves a lot of questions open. It did not say that the basic thrust of the story is false. I saw various talking head legal analyst take different sides on what it meant. Some said it does mean the basic thrust of the story is false. Some said it does not. One of them, former US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Chuck Rosenberg, was among those who said it's likely that the basic thrust of the story is true. His take was that if the Muller team wanted to to word the release so as to unequivocally indicate there was no "there" to the story they could've done that and they did not. He also pointed to the fact that the Mueller team obtained a guilty plea for lying to Congress after he'd already pleaded guilty to other things and been sentenced. When they did it they asked that the judge not add to his sentence though. So there is a question as to why they did that. He said it's consistent with establishing that the crime was committed for the record so that they can go back later and charge others associated with it. He also pointed to language from a previous legal filing pertaining to the Moscow thing pertaining to corroborating evidence but, unfortunately, I'm not sure of exactly where it came from and exactly what it said.

Anyway, as soon as I saw that language from Mueller's office and before I heard anybody commented on it, I thought it looked to be very carefully crafted so as not to be too broad in scope. It does create a situation such that it could be a true statement yet the basic thrust and bottom line of the Buzzfeed report is true. They did not have to write it like that. They could have very clearly and unequivocally said that the story is "bogus" (using your term) and they did not.

Time will tell. At this point I would not be surprised to eventually find that there is nothing to the story nor would I be surprised to find that Mueller's team does indeed have evidence beyond Cohen's testimony that Trump ordered Cohen to lie to Congress. Again: That latter scenario could develop in a way whereby the Mueller statement of yesterday is literally true.

First, Manafort is providing the Russians with internal polling data. Data that the campaign uses to understand where it's failing and succeeding. Where to pull and spend money. Which demographics are you gaining, losing or is up for grabs. Why would you share that with anyone outside of the campaign?

Now this? An attempt to rig polling?

Because the Republican Congress dropped the ball in conducting serious public hearings into the election, the potential obstruction, and all of the other accusations swirling around this administration, most of the investigative legwork has been completed by news reporters and Robert Mueller's legal team

Yeah, Trump has NEVER been told he would be obstructing justice if he declassifies documents showing the problems.

I think it'd be a mistake for Democrats to do anything that could be construed an impeachment effort at this time. However, the special counsel's office did not deny the basic assertion of the Buzzfeed story. That is, it did not deny that it has evidence indicating that Trump instructed Michael Cohen to lie. We will see in time.

BTW one bad thing about this whole Buzzfeed incident is that Buzzfeed asked the Special Counsel's unit for comment on the story before it was published and the Special Counsel's unit declined to comment. They waited to comment until 24 hours AFTER the story was published and then they did so with a rather opaque statement.

I can only guess that if they had it to do over again they'd comment before the story was published. But in this highly charged atmosphere they should NOT have let the story go forward without comment if they had any problems with it.

No, I've been using it for many years. The bottom line, though, is that that statement from Mueller's office did not knock down the basic point of that Buzzfeed story. We know something or some things about the story was or were inaccurate. But we don't know if the story was mostly accurate, mostly inaccurate, or totally inaccurate.

As an example, there is a line in the Buzzfeed article reading, "The special counsel’s office learned about Trump’s directive for Cohen to lie to Congress through interviews with multiple witnesses from the Trump Organization and internal company emails, text messages, and a cache of other documents."

If, for instance, there were e mails but they were not "company emails" that statement is objectively not accurate. But that doesn't change the bottom line much. That's why I thought as soon as I saw the special counsel unit's statement I thought it was written in a way that allows a lot of wiggle room. It most certainly is NOT a clear, unambiguous knockdown of the overall substance of the story.

It would be nice if the special counsel's office would respond clearly to Buzzfeed's request to specify what is inaccurate about the story. But the special counsel's office isn't going to do that.

We will have to let some time pass and see if at some point an official allegation that Trump ordered Cohen to lie is made. Thus "Time will tell."
