But there's no way that's not going to be widely perceived and represented as an attack on the accuser as well as a stereotypical "good ole boys club" response to the situation.

I think it was the kind of performance that fired up the base and made them say "yeah." But in the larger context of the overall population I think it hurt the Republicans.
Right. You think everything hurts the Republicans. Noted. x1,000 (at least) Image

With respect to women:

Again I picked the latest two polls for polls that provide breakdowns at RealClearPolitics. The latest YouGov poll generic Congressional ballot poll has Republicans down by 16 percentage points among women. The latest Marist poll generic Congressional ballot has them down by 13 percentage points among women.

BTW, if you're wondering, they're up among men by 1 percentage point in the YouGov poll and tied among men in the Marist poll. So, no, it does not balance out. They're basically even among men and way behind among women. And today didn't help them among the gender group that they're way behind among.

Watching Graham's rant today made me wonder if the Republicans will EVER learn.

Right, so the Democrat theatrics and orchestrated delays during this process worked exactly how they wanted them to, due process and truth be damned.

That's what Sen Graham was getting at. The Democrats are employing a scorched earth policy toward future elections. They'll do anything to win. And I'm sure that delights you, now that you've switched sides.

As though the Republicans will not do anything to win. I just saw a clip of Kavanaugh saying this was an orchestrated effort by Democrats. Again: That is saying that Dr. Ford's coming forward was orchestrated by the Democratic Party. That is almost certainly not the case. Now, there is no doubt that the Democrats welcomed the situation arising. But it's not likely that Ford came forward because the Democratic Party recruited somebody to deliver false allegations. And when the Republicans start characterizing Ford coming forward as part of an orchestrated effort by the Democratic Party they are screwing up.

It's silly season for the Dems (and Treep) and the only cure is the EFF BEE EYE!

Except it's a trap- a ploy to drag this out and get us closer and closer to the midterms.

Unless Ford and her attorneys have hidden some actual evidence up their sleeves, there is very little for the FBI to do except interview Kavanaugh and Ford, as well as the four people (or was it 3?) who Ford says were there - people who have already said they have no memory of this incident. And if they are lying, there is nothing the FBI can do about it... because the FBI has no criminal jurisdiction in this.

So we wind up with an FBI investigation that takes about a week, except Ford's attorneys will do the same thing they did with the committee - make demands and place conditions on Ford talking to FBI investigators (that's at least 2 weeks right there).

Then the FBI comes back with a report that Ford's version cannot be supported with actual evidence, then new "witnesses" will come out of the bushes with "new" information on the incident, and the FBI of course will have to interview them as well, because how can you say you investigated if you didn't talk to EVERYBODY with information? Played correctly, it will drag right up to the midterms (so why did Feinstein sit on this again? Hm)

This is a silly trap that any fool can see, but the Senate (both sides) isn't playing to voters like Treep or AZ... they are playing to the independents, the fence sitters, and the majority might want to show that they gave Ford every opportunity to prove her case, which would involve having the FBI take a look at it
TL;DR

I assume you’re agreeing with me. The FBI isn’t going to uncover any new evidence. Everyone named as a witness has either confirmed or denied.

The truth, as I see it, is that Dr Ford has lived with this pain but she can’t prove it was Brett. Brett, has done a good job at defending himself against, what is ultimately “she said, he said.”

And, right now in America, you don’t get jailed for just an accusation. You get accosted, threaten, humiliated, defamed and your reputation ruined.

Graham was right.

And look, when the Republicans directly or indirectly attack Dr. Ford they are attacking someone who has a history of telling people that someone who is a Federal judge sexually assauled her back in the day. It's not like this just came out of nowhere after never being mentioned before. And she volunteered to take a lie detector test. I don't personally think lie detector tests are reliable. But it's reasonable to believe that she did. And, BTW, she "passed." AND she ASKED for a FBI investigation of the situation. I noted that CID had some comments about the utility of that. But the fact that she asked for that is informative.

Then Kavanaugh came out basically using the Trump approach. Except for the crying part.

Look, if you're a Trump fan you probably liked it. But I don't think it'll play well with the general population. We'll see.

As usual, you can't see the forest for the trees.

Had Feinstein not sat on this for almost two months, keeping it in her hip pocket for an eleventh hour delay tactic, yet another FBI investigation of Kavanaugh (number 7 to be exact) could have been completed without unduly delaying the confirmation. At this point, the Republicans are calling her out for her bullshit and moving on.

Feinstein did her party and Ford a yuge disservice.

DR?

Well thats obvious!

I was talking about why an FBI investigation would not produce anything new, why it is a trap that could stall a vote right up to the midterms, and why the Judiciary Committee should probably request it anyway

You're right. I'm not seeing it. But I don't think it's a forest and trees thing. She asked Feinstein to keep it confidential. She made the allegation to Feinstein before Kavanaugh was the nominee. Her story, as I understand it, is that she was hoping she could get the information into the stream confidentially so that he wouldn't BE the nominee.

She was outed by the media, for better or for worse. And that is why we are where we are now.

No, it's not truth be damed. My bet is that in this case that Dr. Ford is telling the truth. And if Republicans were interested in the truth I think, in spite of what CID typed, that they would have been in favor of having the FBI go ahead and take a look at the situation.

The fact is that, through this whole situation, the Republicans have acted as though they are opposed to unrestricted pursuit of the truth. And it doesn't matter whether the Democrats have political motivations or not. The Republicans have, to me, clearly been dragging their feet with respect to pursuit of the truth.

Like for instance refusing to call any other witnesses for this current session. What's the basis of that? Kavanaugh's buddy said nothing happened yet Ford wants him called. What do the Republicans have to lose by calling him? And why not go ahead and call the Ford's therapist as Ford wanted so the therapist can answer questions about the therapists' notes?

It's pretty obvious that Republicans are the ones trying to limit information processing.

Kavanaugh is telling the truth. At least the way everything was presented today, his case is far more compelling than hers. Your party switch transformation is showing. Badly, I might add.

That is absolute nonsense. There is absolutely no way one can confirm that Kavanaugh was telling the truth today. He did the thing about calendars and even his own lawyers say his calendars don't rule out the possibility that what Ford said happened happened. He cried a lot. But that's it.

Meanwhile she asked for an FBI investigation and actually asked that Kavanaugh's buddy who wrote a letter supporting Kavanaugh be called to testify. Also asked for other people to be called to testify. Her "side" is clearly the one more open to soliciting information. It's not debatable.

And BTW I have not made a Party switch. I have been registered as a Libertarian for decades. It's just that I was a Libertarian who almost always voted Republican in an effort to pick the lessor of two evils among the two candidates that had a realistic chance to win. Now I am a Libertarian who will likely never vote Republican again as that Party has shown that it has lost its mind and is now the greater of two evils.

No, he wasn't. I guess it's harmless if you believe that. But he wasn't. And the other things you say are obviously debatable. Both have had people vouching for them. He's got his Yale room mate saying he was a wild child while he says he's a choir boy. There is absolutely no evidence that she did this for political reasons.

Wrong.
A better response for JSO

Of course he was. Clearly believable, much more so than Ford.
Everyone Ford named who she claimed were at this party have ALL said, nope. Even her friend who told her she was sorry for having to tell the truth.

DR?

Well thats obvious!

I was talking about why an FBI investigation would not produce anything new, why it is a trap that could stall a vote right up to the midterms, and why the Judiciary Committee should probably request it anyway

So yes- you were agreeing with me (even if you didn’t intend to.) An FBI investigation would only stall the inevitable and waste $$$.

And correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the FBI say the wouldn’t investigate? Didn’t the PD which has jurisdiction where these alleged incidents occur say they’ll investigate if a report is made?
