Told my wife to take the long way home tonight, from the airport, instead of driving thru St Paul.

Protest Closes I-94 Again

Post by Gil Dobie »

My wife made it home in good time, taking the long way home from the airport. Castille's sister calls Yanez a liar. From what I've read, it appears Yanez was coached well, by saying Castille was reaching for his gun, while his girlfiend claims Yanez requested his ID, and was shot reaching for his ID. I wasn't at the trial, so I don't know for sure either way.

CNN Linky

Thousands of protesters gathered Friday night after a jury found a police officer not guilty in last year's fatal shooting of motorist Philando Castile.

Minnesota State Patrol said it arrested 18 protesters following demonstrations on Interstate 94 in St. Paul. They were arrested after they failed to comply with orders to disperse, the agency posted on Twitter.
St. Paul police estimated that 2,000 people marched peacefully through the streets, including a crowd gathered outside the Minnesota state Capitol. Speakers led chants, sang hymns and urged the protesters not to lose hope.
Some held signs that read "this hurts" and "Justice not served for Philando."

I could support a DoJ or outside investigation.

Let yet another supposed case of "systemic racism" get filed in the mythology section along with the tale of Michael Brown was some cherub who was shot by a bloodthirsty cop.

I guess that's what you get for keeping your gun and ID in the same vicinity.

It's pretty damn tough to disprove the "I felt threatened" defense.

It isnt even that, though-

If youre carrying a gun you need to tell the officer up front

Usually he will then ask where your id is and you can tell him its in the same pocket

this was tragic but the victim didn't use any common sense at all

Yeah. I was thinking that he should have said "ok, but my ID is near my gun."

Still you guys have a tendency to freak even us honkeys the fuck out. Its obviously on the carrier to be level headed if theyre going to pack.

After hearing a few jury members that came forward. The State was not able to prove Manslaughter or either endangerment charge. Feds are looking at the case and the mother said she's going file in civil court. Another protest is scheduled for today at the St Anthony Police Station, who have already let Yanez go.

The civil case is the best chance - and it's a poor one too

Yanez also has a case against the department for wrongful termination. They probably got him on policy violations not related to whether the shooting was justified. That's legitimate.

But then the police chief pulled a Trump and made stupid public statements saying the firing was due to the shooting itself

One think I didn't get, was Yanez taking 7 shots in 10 seconds. 10 seconds is a long time. IMO, he shot until Castille quit moving. Appears he lost his cool, and kept firing.

He took his time with the last couple of rounds... finishing shots...dead men tell no tales....

This is a BULLSHYT excuse that most of the cops who get into trouble will use. This is what is taught. This man was a LEGAL gun owner. Where is the NRA? But they talk a good game during election year or if you are white.

They released the dash cam footage today. This should have been a bigger case for NRA and gun rights advocates...

Cop calmly telling him that his taillight is out. Castille calmy telling him, "Sir, I have to tell you that I have a firearm." BOOM BOOM BANG BANG.

You forgot about the part where he told him not to pull it out.

IMO, the cop was in over his head, and was unable to handle the situation.

Kare !! Linky

As Castile hands Yanez his insurance card, he says, “Sir, I have to tell you that I do have a firearm on me."

Yanez: “OK, don’t reach for it then.”

Castile: “I’m… I’m… [inaudible] reaching.”

Yanez: “Don’t pull it out.”

Castile: “I’m not pulling it out.”

Passenger: “He’s not pulling it out.”

Yanez: “Don't pull it out!”

This is a technically good, but in reality bad, shoot

Yanez shouldn't have been a cop. You need to be cooler than that.

Agreed. No reason he couldn't have retreated behind his own vehicle. He even had backup. He overreacted to a guy not following instructions. The situation sucks, but it's not manslaughter.

They really need to add a "How to Follow Instructions from a Law Enforcement Officer" chapter to high school driver ed courses. Because black lives do matter.

That's what the jury said, it wasn't Manslaughter by the letter of the law.

I couldn't see into the car, but based on the dialogue, I don't see how this driver did anything wrong.

If that had been me standing at the window, the guy advising me he had a gun would have immediately put me at ease. Yanez went hard in the other direction. He completely lost his mind

I don't see the manslaughter angle but Yanez never should have been in that job. Ill bet there were some warning signs that a supervisor ignored

Ah... Yes
In the summer of 1987 I was in Denver (long story)
I got pulled over with expired out of state plates on a car I did not own (long story)
I had my dads military issue .45 laying in the back seat

Needless to say the exchange with the officer was at first very tense
then turned hilarious... (long story)

Short version:
Cop says "Do not move towards the gun"
I say: "No shit what do you think I'm stupid..?"

Hilarity ensued...
