The 1968 season became known as "The Year of the Pitcher", and Gibson was at the forefront of pitching dominance. His earned run average was 1.12, a live-ball era record, as well as the major league record in 300 or more innings pitched. It was the lowest major league ERA since Dutch Leonard's 0.96 mark 54 years earlier.[48] Gibson threw 13 shutouts, three fewer than fellow Nebraskan Grover Alexander's 1916 major league record of 16.[49] He won all 12 starts in June and July, pitching a complete game every time, (eight of which were shutouts), and allowed only six earned runs in 108 innings pitched (a 0.50 ERA). Gibson pitched 47 consecutive scoreless innings during this stretch, at the time the third-longest scoreless streak in major league history. He also struck out 91 batters, and he won two-consecutive NL Player of the Month awards.[50] Gibson finished the season with 28 complete games out of 34 games started. Of the games he didn't complete, he was pinch-hit for, meaning Gibson was not removed from the mound for another pitcher for the entire season. He also only conceded a total of 38 earned runs.[11][51]
I remember Drysdale and Gibson having long scoreless streaks in 1968. Gibson was defeated by Mickey Lolich in game 7 of the World Series. Denny McLain had a decent season too, 31-6, 1.96 ERA, 280 K's, 28 complete games, 6 shutouts. Mclain was 1-2 in the World Series, Gibson 2-1 and Mickey Lolich 3-0 Lolich pitched 3 complete games in that series, with a 1.67 ERA. In 1969, MLB raised the pitching mound and both Gibson and McLain's ERA went up 100 points.
I remember Gil. That doesn't diminish what Gibson did.

See, it's true, JJ has turned into the Other Sports version of JSO. He's not even denying it anymore, he's basically come out of the closet on this. He used to be sane, if somewhat odd when it came to the Yanks, now he's a raving embarrassment. I almost feel bad about trolling him into it, but apparently he was just looking for the opening anyway. JJ, I guess it's good we finally meet the real you. I look forward to the 20 threads you'll start all about this same question - like with JSO, no one will read them, but at least we know you'll be in your safe space. Might I suggest a puppy video would help too?

TLDNR.

Note: STILL has not named one member of the 1998 Yankees implicated in steroid use during that season or any time before.

Fun fact of the day.

If the Yankees lose every game for the next 20 seasons, they will have as many all-time losses as the Phillies.

That's assuming that the Phillies win every game during the next 20 seasons.

Yankees fans are the only fans in professional sports that make Philadelphia fans look classy.

Speaking of the Phillies, the 1964 NL pennant comeback by the St Louis Cardinals. Phillies had a 6.5 game lead on September 20th. The rest is history.

If one insists on AL highlights, I would have to go with Ernie Shore's perfect game against the Washington Senators in relief of George Ruth, who was ejected for knocking the home plate umpire's block off after the first batter was walked. The runner was caught stealing, and nobody else got on the entire game. This amazing feat was unfortunately wiped out in the "reforms" of the idiot Fay Vincent.

Personally, though, I prefer to look at the only player ever to hold seven baseballs in one hand at the same time as the greatest ever....

A weak Olympics for the US overall. I'm sure you mean the hockey team, but Eric Heiden produced five golds in speed skating. That was our ENTIRE haul of gold at that particular Olympics. In fact, we only got four silvers (speed skating, figure skating, and skiing) and two bronzes (speed skating and figure skating). Pretty weak, particularly in view that we boycotted the Summer Olympics that year.

Over 1400 people have broken the 4 minute mile.

I'll take a bunch of college kids upsetting the Russians and going on to win the Gold Medal Game.
