30 for 30 - 1983 NFL Draft

Holy crap. I knew it was a silly draft but it was incredible to see what went on during the couple hours of the actual draft. Was also funny to see how little production value went into the TV broadcast compared to today. I didn't remember the Elway to Yankees announcement. My only complaint about the show was it left me not knowing which side to take... Colts or Elway.

I didn't know Marino was 27th pick of the day. He turned out to to be a hell of a QB.

I went with the Colts. Of course, I've never liked Elway, and he came across in that show exactly as I suspected. In the end, it Elway got the best of it. Marino may not be the best guy either, but he came across a lot better in the show than Elway, IMO.

Great 30 For 30 episode. I was unaware of the rumors surrounding Marino. I noticed the same thing about the production. Also good to see George Grande. He worked in New Haven when I was in high school and was friends with my mother and her husband.

I sided with the Colts, until they moved to Indy. Over time my opinion of Elway improved.

And yeah, I regained some respect for Elway. I grew up with a B'more Colts fan dad and thought his full name was That Bastard Elway.

Yeah life threating injury cut his career short as was the case with Michael Irvin both had careers ended on slant routes.

I haven't seen this installment yet, but all the others have been great. Particularly the one about Vlade Divac and Drazen Petrovic.

I haven't seen this yet, it is saved on my DVR and just haven't had the chance. I don't know how much this was mentioned, but there were many rumors that Marino was a heavy drug user and that scared away many teams. The fact that the Steelers passed him by seemed to validate many concerns at the time since the Steelers knew Marino very well. Dan not only went to Pitt, but he grew also grew up a few blocks away from Pitt stadium and has been a P-burgh legend since high school. The Steelers were certainly aware of Dan for many years by that point and still passed him by. Many were very surpised that Dan became a big star very quickly in Miami.

The show clearly implied their focus was defense and that was why they passed on him, but who knows the real story?
