NFL will possibly do away with sudden death in playoffs

Post by bandl »

NEW YORK (AP)—NFL owners will vote next week whether to allow each team a possession in overtime in the playoffs if the team winning the OT coin toss kicks a field goal on the first series.

Previously, the game would end whenever either side scores, as happened in the NFC championship game in January, with New Orleans beating Minnesota on Garrett Hartley’s(notes) kick. But NFL competition committee chairman Rich McKay says a trend has developed showing too strong an advantage for teams winning the coin toss to start overtime.

If the team that falls behind by three points on the first series also kicks a field goal, then the game would continue under current sudden death rules.

The proposal is only for the postseason.

I hate it. They need to go to college OT rules.

I like it because it's better than the old system, but I still think the college way is better. The NFL rules have changed over the years to favor the offense. Each team should have an equal chance in OT. This rule change helps, but the team receiving the kichoff still has an edge.

But in the NFL they should start from their OWN 25 instead of the opposing teams 25.

I like that it's a hybrid of the old NFL rule and the current college rule. Now both teams would each recieve one chance on offense. After that if the score is still tied, then it becomes sudden death. I like it.

If they change this, NCAA basketball needs to do away with the 2 halves too. It's dumb to go from 4 quarters in high school, to 2 halves in NCAA, back to 4 quarters at the next level. Make it consistent.

Not if the first team with the ball scores a TD. If that happens the game is over.

So you would like to have the Lions and Browns go to 12 OT's? I sure as hell don't.

I was thinking the 35 or 40. They could also make a rule that if a players scores a TD either he kicks the extra point or his team goes for 2.

You're misrepresenting the proposal, bandl. The proposal does not "do away" with sudden death. It merely delays the start of sudden death until BOTH teams have had a possession, which is what I've proposed for years. But it doesn't go far enough. Tying it to the toss winners getting a FG? That's lame, and it's one extra thing to remember. Don't tie it to ANY score. Both teams get a possession, PERIOD. TD, FG, safety, turnover, 3-and-out, it shouldn't matter. The whole idea is that the start of OT and the start of sudden death do NOT co-incide. This makes the extra quarter fair to both teams.

BTW, that college/HS OT is bogus. It is artificial. Scores and stats baloon artificially, and the stipulation forcing a 2-pt conversion is dumb. Use a standard NFL OT modified as above.

I also agree about hoops timing. The change for college only is dumb.

Of course, the new football OT only works if you have an intelligent person calling the toss. One only has to look as far as Abner Haynes to see how a guy can screw things royally. He almost cost his team an AFL Championship because his mouth moved faster than his head. Lucky for him the game went to TWO overtimes....

Sorry, I should have told everyone that you've been proposing this for years. Will this be called the SuperHornet rule when/if it's adopted by the NFL?

Only if they get it right. I don't want ANYTHING to do with it if they have that dumb proviso tying it to a FG.

LOL.

Just play the OT like it was regulation, only each team gets the same number of possessions. If Team A scores on it's second possession and Team B has only had the ball once, Team B gets the ball one more time. Kind of like extra innings in baseball. Each team gets the same number of possessions until the tie is broken.

And even colder when they meet in the Superbowl, which is the only way they could meet in the post season under the current set up.

There are states where high school basketball has two halves and not quarters.

Minnesota being one of them. They switched to that about 5 or 6 years ago.
