Again, you're talking about your opinion of Earnhardt off the track as his importance to the sport. When it comes to racing, Gordon > Earnhardt.93henfan wrote:I think you know a lot about what you're talking about in regard to Gordon, but much less in regard to Earnhardt, which appears to predate when you started following the sport.89Hen wrote:You win. You grew up within an hour of a NASCAR track and were friends with a MRN broadcaster so nobody else knows what they're talking about.
And where I live doesn't really matter. The amount that I follow the sport does though.

You're wrong. Start a Masters thread or something. I'll talk about Tiger Woods and you can laugh at me.89Hen wrote:Again, you're talking about your opinion of Earnhardt off the track as his importance to the sport. When it comes to racing, Gordon > Earnhardt.93henfan wrote:

What about Bud Wamsley?!93henfan wrote:If I had to put drivers in four tiers right now, it'd be:
1st Tier: Earnhardt, Petty
2nd Tier: Johnson (could move to tier one before he retires), Gordon, Pearson, Waltrip, Allison, Yarborough

4th tier: the rest

That's going back a ways. I used to like Lennie Pond as a kid. Pond's car owner was Bud Wamsley. I have a picture at home of me standing with Lennie in front of the #54 Pepsi car on pit road at Dover. Damn, that had to be like 75 or 76.Ibanez wrote:What about Bud Wamsley?!93henfan wrote:If I had to put drivers in four tiers right now, it'd be:

That's your opinion but I'm not sure there's a single stat that supports your opinion.93henfan wrote:You're wrong.89Hen wrote: Again, you're talking about your opinion of Earnhardt off the track as his importance to the sport. When it comes to racing, Gordon > Earnhardt.

Re: 2016 NASCAR thread
Seven Earnhardt championships to four Gordon championships is not my opinion. Them's the facts.89Hen wrote:That's your opinion but I'm not sure there's a single stat that supports your opinion.93henfan wrote:

You say, "but, but, but Chase format - Gordon woulda coulda...."
Well then, I'll say Earnhardt might have won 15 championships in a Chase format. Two can play that game.
Bottom line is, only Earnhardt and Petty have seven, and only Johnson is in the same conversation with what he might do in the future.

No tattoos on me, even of the difference in championships between Earnhardt and Gordon.89Hen wrote:93henfan wrote:Well then, I'll say Earnhardt might have won 15 championships in a Chase format. Virginia native Ricky Rudd survived one of the most incredible wrecks (note arm hanging out the window at 1:15 mark) in the 84 Busch Clash. He raced a week later (finished 7th) in the Daytona 500 using tape to keep his swollen eyes open. Then won the next race in Richmond, again using tape (actually band-aids) to keep his eyes open.CHARLOTTE (NASCAR Wire Service) — Four nominees renowned for their competitive spirit and one of the most talented broadcasters in NASCAR racing were added to the list of nominees for the 2017 NASCAR Hall of Fame.
Drivers Ricky Rudd and Ron Hornaday Jr., team owner Jack Roush, engine builder Waddell Wilson and legendary play-by-play man Ken Squier are the five new nominees announced by NASCAR on Wednesday.

Re: 2016 NASCAR thread
That was one of the first wrecks I ever witnessed at Daytona where the car launched itself. That and when Cale Yarborough did the same thing in the Hardee's 28 car qualifying made NASCAR start thinking about restrictor plates and later roof flaps.
FYI: If you pause that video around the 1'22" mark, that thing sticking out the driver side window is Rudd's arm.

Re: 2016 NASCAR thread
It's a bit of a long read by the local sports writer, but worth the read on Cassill. Nice thing about the guy writing the article is he is a massive race fan, so it's not just a sports guy (like me) trying to write about something he knows little about. Davis got that paper to start covering dirt track racing, modifieds, etc... During race season he is at a track nearly every day talking to drivers, watching practices, races, etc...

That's pretty damn exciting, but I'll take Ned Jarrett calling (and coaching) his son's win over Dale Earnhardt in 93. That was the least painful of all the Earnhardt Daytona 500 failures because I was very happy for the Jarrett's.BDKJMU wrote:Best call of a Daytona finish ever..![]()
