If I had to put drivers in four tiers right now, it'd be:

1st Tier: Earnhardt, Petty

2nd Tier: Johnson (could move to tier one before he retires), Gordon, Pearson, Waltrip, Allison, Yarborough

3rd Tier: Too many to list, but think guys like Tony Stewart, Dale Jr, Kyle Busch, Dale Jarrett, Harry Gant, etc

4th tier: the rest

That's going back a ways. I used to like Lennie Pond as a kid. Pond's car owner was Bud Wamsley. I have a picture at home of me standing with Lennie in front of the #54 Pepsi car on pit road at Dover. Damn, that had to be like 75 or 76.

I only know of him b/c my brother in law is Bud's step-grandson. Talk about 6 degrees of seperation. Bud's brother and widow are pretty cool people. Very generous. They have a house on Topsail that has a lot of memorabilia from his racing days.

Seven Earnhardt championships to four Gordon championships is not my opinion. Them's the facts.

Well then, I'll say Earnhardt might have won 15 championships in a Chase format. Two can play that game.

Bottom line is, only Earnhardt and Petty have seven, and only Johnson is in the same conversation with what he might do in the future.

Virginia native Ricky Rudd survived one of the most incredible wrecks (note arm hanging out the window at 1:15 mark) in the 84 Busch Clash. He raced a week later (finished 7th) in the Daytona 500 using tape to keep his swollen eyes open. Then won the next race in Richmond, again using tape (actually band-aids) to keep his eyes open.

That was one of the first wrecks I ever witnessed at Daytona where the car launched itself. That and when Cale Yarborough did the same thing in the Hardee's 28 car qualifying made NASCAR start thinking about restrictor plates and later roof flaps.

It's a bit of a long read by the local sports writer, but worth the read on Cassill. Nice thing about the guy writing the article is he is a massive race fan, so it's not just a sports guy (like me) trying to write about something he knows little about. Davis got that paper to start covering dirt track racing, modifieds, etc... During race season he is at a track nearly every day talking to drivers, watching practices, races, etc...

That's pretty damn exciting, but I'll take Ned Jarrett calling (and coaching) his son's win over Dale Earnhardt in 93. That was the least painful of all the Earnhardt Daytona 500 failures because I was very happy for the Jarrett's.
