And after the extremely entertaining US/Slovenia game we get the exact opposite in the supremely boring 0-0 tie between England and Algeria.

Well, the US is guaranteed through now with a win against Algeria next week. Heck, there's even a scenario now where a tie gets them through considering they are two goals scored ahead of England (of course, if we hadn't been screwed today on the go ahead goal we could be through with just a tie for sure but now maybe we'll keep attacking from the get go). Slovenia is also through with just a tie now, and could still get through even with a loss.

3 ties in 4 games for the group. Who'da thunk.

BTW, now Algeria is still alive. A win by them over the US and a win or tie by Slovenia and they're though. :o

England's 10th all time World Cup goalless draw. Easily in first place in the number of goalless draws, with Italy, Brazil, Uruguay, and Germany all distant seconds with 7 each. Needless to say, sometimes the most headlines that involve England have nothing to do with what they do on the field.

So here we go
Slovenia 4 pts +1 3 goals scored
USA 2 pts 0 3 goals scored
England 2 pts 0 1 goal scored
Algeria 1 pt -1 0 goals scored

If Slovenia wins, USA needs to tie or win and USA and Slovenia are in

If Slovenia and England tie, USA wins and we are in.

If Slovenia and England tie, USA ties, we are in if we score within 1 goal of what England scores in the Slovenia game (example England ties 3-3 with Slovenia - if US ties 2-2 we are in because we have scored more goals than England)

If Slovenia and England tie, draw lots against England if we tie with 2 goals less than what England scores in the Slovenia game (example England ties 3-3 with Slovenia - if US ties 1-1, all tiebreakers are even with England because both teams will have 3 pts, 0 goal differential, and the same amount of goals scored. Since we tied each other, the other tiebreakers cancel each other out)

If Slovenia and England tie, USA ties and we are in if we tie with more than 2 goals fewer than what England scores in the Slovenia game (example England ties 3-3 with Slovenia - if US ties 0-0 England is in because we have scored fewer goals than England)

If England wins, USA needs to win to be in

WIN AND WE ARE IN.

The US is so lucky because of their draw and the draw from the England-Algeria game.

Would you say having a legit goal disallowed, costing the US 2 pts. is good luck?

Yeah cause the US played like crap the first half. To come from two goals down to tie it is lucky. Sure the winning goal was disallowed but they were lucky to make the comeback they did and I'll take the tie any day. All they have to do is beat Algeria to get through. If they can't do that then they deserve to go home.

Well, the italians are back to their old diving ways. Kiwis would be up 1-0 at half if not for a bogus penalty for Italy. :ohno:

He was still dumb for grabbing that much shirt in the box.

All credit to the All White for hanging on and taking a 1-1 tie from the second half onslaught.

I don't understand what you mean by "luck". Are you saying the Slovenian goals were earned but in the second half some supernatural force directed the ball past the Slovenian goalkeeper twice? Maybe you're right. I had thought the US simply outplayed Slovenia in the second half. Silly me.

This is true, BUT, even the commentators were bitching about how easily they were going down throughout the whole game. It's embarrassing for them, really, especially against a team like New Zealand.

Er, 5-0 through 80. And this is without Ronaldo scoring.

Setting up quite a match with Brazil this friday. Winner takes the group and they both advance. Even if they tie, they both advance.

Spoke too soon; Ronaldo scores to make it 6-0.

Even if Portugal loses to Brazil they're putting so many goals in now that it might make it too hard for Cote d'Ivorie to score enough against North Korea on Friday to get past Portugal.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guarantee that Ivory Coast won't score enough to make up the goal differential

Way to get all that scoring out of your system, Portugal. You're primed to be Germany's bitch in the knockout round, again. 8-)

Another game impacted by poor refeering - Chile go up 1-0 on the Swiss after the Swiss have played since the 30 minute mark with 10 men. The guy from Chile went down like he'd been shot after minimal contact with the Swiss player, contact the guy from Chile initiated. Ref goes to the straight red. This guy's given out 8 yellows and a red this game, including a yellow at the 2 minute mark.

Maybe the Chilean saw the play acting yesterday against Kaka from Brazil and figured, rightly, that you can flop and get a red card pretty easy these days.

Said it before and I'll say it again - gotta find a way to take the red card power away, or greatly limit it, from these referees.
