That's not really much different than the ski racing and freestyle skiing events, or the speed skating and figure skating.




Curling was included in the program of the inaugural Winter Olympic Games in 1924 in Chamonix. The results of that competition were not considered official by the International Olympic Committee until 2006. Curling was a demonstration sport at the 1932 Games, and then again after a lengthy absence in 1988 and 1992. The sport was finally added to the official program for the 1998 Nagano Games.

As for obscure sh*t, most of the Olympics is sh*t that 99% of people don't give a rat's a$$ about outside of the Olympics. Especially in the Winter Games, where hockey is the only sport that gets much significant non-olympic coverage.

But I agree with you on the commercials.

Several sports get plenty of coverage, they just dont have leagues that highlight the sport on a daily basis. Short track skating is wildly popular in asia as is speed skating and figure skating in europe. Figure Skating also gets plenty of coverage in the US when there are significant events which is about all you can ask for. Just because something isnt as popular here doesnt mean it isnt popular. The Olympics arent an American Sporting Event, so you cant, nor should you expect each sport at the Olympics to be widely popular here.

I didn't ask about speed skating or figure skating (commented that the mens wasn't manly). Was asking what snowboarding and curling were doing in the Olympics. No kidding the Olympics aren't an American Sporting event. That's why you have the traditional events like downhill skiing, the slalom skiing events, ski jumping, the bobsledding and luge events, figure skating, etc that are more popular in Europe than the US, and the speed skating you mentioned being more popular in Asia (and which was started in Scandanavia). Even curling, which I just looked up, is said to be more popular in Europe and Asia. On the other hand you have snowboarding, a sport that was invented in the US and I imagine is more popular in the US than the rest of the world, in the Olympics. Sounds like a sport that's more appropriate for the X games than the Olympics.

1st time I've watched much of any winter Olympics since around 92'? (if Calgary was in 88' and the Olympics are held every 4 years and are being held in 2010 then something doesn't add up).

Problems I see.

Too many events. Read an article today that back in 88' was 46 Winter Olympic events and now are 86.
-Since when did snowboard racing become an Oly sport?
-WTF is it with a bunch of hippie snowboarders riding down this tube thingy doing tricks becoming an Oly sport?
-Since when did curling become an Oly sport? Don't remember that one either in the 80s-early 90s.
So what new obscure sh*t are they going to come up with next?

-Too many damn commercials.

-Too much human interest touch feelly crap. 1/3 commericials, 1/3 human interest, and 1/3 competition. And since I was watching it live with my gf, Sun-Fri, I couldn't fast forward through all that.

-There's shouldn't be mens singles figure skating. It just isn't manly, with their sparkly spandex and flailing their arms all around. At least with the couples it looks like the men sort of get to cop a feel.

If you dont like an event, dont watch the event.

Like I was saying, I was coerced into watching figure skating last week while on vacation with the girlfriend. I'm sure a lot of guys on here were coerced into watching it by their wives or girlfriends.

No girlfriend with me tonight, so no figure skating! I'm watching something more appropriate for a guy to be watching- NASCAR! (taped it today)

Snowboarding may have been invented in America, but like basketball popularity has grown and other countries are competitive.

I didn't see that intime though. I thought it wasn't on. I'm pissed. NBC would hve had HUGE ratings with the game on the main station.

At least for us people in the Pacific and Mountain time zone, live on MSNBC is better than fuckin tape delay on NBC. Live on NBC would always be best for everything.

ESPN is thinking about putting all of their sports on 3 hour delay so they can be like the Olympics

Every player on teams USA is an NHL player, and the US isn't that far behind Canada when it comes to hockey. I also think we have the better goalie which equalizes things. (No disrespect to Brodeur, but I think Miller is better right now.)

No doubt. My point is that the US has already proven itself as a world hockey power. The US did win the 1996 World Cup of Hockey tourney, beating Canada in the finals (as I recall it was 2 games to 1 with the deciding game played on Canadian ice).

Anytime you beat Canada in hockey it a big win, but I get tired of the NBC announcers talking about the US as if we are a second rate hockey power.
