ESPN Game Day will beat the Gonzaga @Butler Game

Post by EPJr »

Image

In a telling sign of the anticipation surrounding the impending college basketball season in the state of Indiana, two state schools found out on Wednesday they’ll be hosting ESPN’s College GameDay this winter.

Butler, national runners-up in 2010 and 2011 before missing last year’s NCAA tournament, will host GameDay for the first time ever at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 19 when the Bulldogs face perennial mid-major power Gonzaga.

Gonzaga is ranked No. 20 in ESPN’s pre-season poll. The game will be GameDay’s first stop for the 2012-13 season.

The women's championship finale will be conducted in conjunction with the men's semifinal contests on Saturday, March 16 and will be televised on the ESPN Networks, while the first three rounds will once again be held at Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena on the campus of Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, March 8-11.

"We have made a commitment to further strengthen the Atlantic 10 as one of the premier women's basketball conferences in Division I," stated A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. "Without a doubt, relocating our championship game to Barclays Center is a key move in that commitment. It gives our top teams exceptional exposure on one of the biggest stages in the world. We are excited about showcasing A-10 women's basketball in Brooklyn in March."

The top 12 women's teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the Atlantic 10 Championship. First round action of the event begins on Friday, March 8 at Hagan Arena, with the top four teams earning a bye. Quarterfinal play continues on Saturday, March 9 in Philadelphia, with the Semifinal round aired live on CBS Sports Network on Sunday, March 10. The Championship game will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Barclays Center.

"Barclays Center is proud to announce its first women's basketball game," said Sean Saadeh, Vice President of Programming for Barclays Center. "Our venue's inaugural season will offer a strong lineup of college basketball, culminating with the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship for the men and Championship Finals for the women."

Butler-Marquette, Memphis-VCU among best early-season matchups

Sure, it's still summer, but it's never too early to start thinking about the holidays. And whether it be alongside turkey and trimmings or a slew of holiday gifts, nothing goes better with late-year cheer than college basketball. This year's slate of early-season tournaments shouldn't disappoint, even if you can't talk your spouse or employer into sending you to the Bahamas for the loaded Battle 4 Atlantis.

Rick Majerus to sit out 2012-13 season with health issues
Image

St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - Saint Louis University men's basketball coach Rick Majerus will miss the upcoming season due to health issues, NewsChannel 5's Frank Cusumano has learned.

In the summer of 2011, Majerus missed time to have a stent put in his heart.

"Rick is in a California hospital undergoing evaluation and treatment for an ongoing heart condition," Director of Athletics Chris May said. "His health is the most important issue right now, and our hope is for full and complete recovery."

SIMMONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by EPJr »

Image
http://www.vcuramnation.com/2012/09/201 ... ts-to-vcu/

Shaka Smart and the VCU basketball program capped off an impressive 2013 recruiting class this morning with a highly-recruited 3-star big man out of Miami in 6’9 225-pound . He averaged 26 ppg and 15 rpg last season as a junior and selected the Rams today over Alabama and former VCU head coach Anthony Grant. Simmons played for Kenny Gillion of Team Breakdown on the AAU circuit and plays his high school ball under Robert Doctor at South Miami H.S. in Miami, Florida.

The 6’9 center was ranked #143 in the 2013 Rivals150 prior to the latest update (now 3-stars, unranked) and the #27 C (3-stars) prospect in 2013 according to Scout. According to ESPN, Scout, and Rivals, Simmons also boasted offers at one point or another from Georgia, Kansas State, Memphis, South Carolina, Miami, Mississippi State, South Florida, Murray State, Temple, and UCF. He held additional offers from Maryland, Clemson, Marshall, Florida International, and Florida Gulf Coast that aren’t listed on those sites.

Going into the A-10, shoring up VCU’s front court depth had to be a concern for Shaka Smart and his staff. With bigger, more athletic bodies across the board in the A-10 compared to the Rams’ previous home in the Colonial Athletic Association, landing a quality big man was a priority. Adding a a highly-recruited back-to-the-basket big man like Simmons looks to be just what the doctor ordered for VCU.

Simmons caps off a strong 2013 class for VCU that includes the speedy back court tandem of 3-star PG JeQuan Lewis out of Dickson County, Tennessee and 3-star DeMatha guard Jairus Lyles.

ImageAndy Glockner>INSIDE COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Biggest Offseason Moves (A-10)

We still get to enjoy Brad Stevens at Butler, Shaka Smart at VCU,
The only coach who won't be on the sidelines this season from a top-10 team below is Rick Majerus, due to illness. The Atlantic 10 admits Butler (from the Horizon League) and VCU (from the CAA).

Recruiting

A lot of the success teams in this category have comes from the development of less-heralded recruits into major-college talent. That said, highly-regarded players are finding their way to more off-the-standard-path programs, lured by strong coaching and available playing time. For the Class of 2012, 10 of ESPN's top 100 ranked recruits ended up outside the six BCS football leagues. UNLV, Houston and VCU nabbed two potential stars apiece. Here is the full list of guys who should make immediate impacts (in order of ranking):

Anthony Bennett (F, UNLV)
Danuel House (SF, Houston)
Shaq Goodwin (C, Memphis)
Katin Reinhardt (SG, UNLV)
Danrad "Chicken" Knowles (PF, Houston)
Winston Shepard (SF, San Diego State)
Robert Upshaw (C, Fresno State)
Kellen Dunham (SG, Butler)
Fred Van Vleet (PG, Wichita State)
Melvin Johnson (SG, VCU)
Maurice Watson (PG, Boston U.)
Jordan Burgess (SF, VCU)

Storylines To Watch

How well will Butler and VCU transition to the Atlantic 10?: The acceleration of the Bulldogs' and Rams' move into the more rugged A-10 has put significant pressure on rosters built to compete in their former leagues to be able to handle bigger, more physical rosters for a full league season. Both teams are very talented -- VCU especially returns a ton of talent that has developed during the Rams' excellent runs the last two seasons -- so we'll get a good proxy of the age-old, high-major argument that mid-majors couldn't handle playing their league schedules.

Very, Very Early Top 10

1. UNLV (Mountain West)
If Anthony Marshall can capably handle the lead guard role, the sky is the limit for the Rebels. They have a ridiculously deep frontcourt, solid enough shooting and depth that should allow them to defend while still pushing tempo.

2. San Diego State (Mountain West)
The Aztecs very easily could win the league in their final season. The two meetings with UNLV and the contrasts of (relative) frontcourt and backcourt strength should be sensational.

3. VCU (Atlantic 10)
Have every rotation guy back except for Bradford Burgess? Check. Still have Shaka Smart on the bench? Check. Two highly-touted recruits? Check. The Atlantic 10 is not going to enjoy visits to this side of Richmond, either. The Rams should contend strongly in their debut season
.

4. Creighton (Missouri Valley)
Doug McDermott is back and so is much of the core of the offensively explosive Bluejays. If they can even show modest improvement defensively, this could be a second-weekend team in the NCAAs.

5. Saint Louis (Atlantic 10)
Even without Rick Majerus on the sideline, the Billikens are the likely A-10 media poll favorite. Kwamain Mitchell and Cody Ellis provide enough shooting to supplement the very stingy defense. The pressure is on interim coach Jim Crews to get this team playing to its potential.

6. Murray State (Ohio Valley)
Last season's almost-unbeaten Cinderella returns a lot of talent, including probable preseason All-America Isaiah Canaan. With Belmont now in the OVC, though, this won't be a cakewalk to the crown.

7. Butler (Atlantic 10)
If Rotnei Clarke and Kellen Dunham shoot like they are capable of, this is a whole new Butler team and one that could be very good. Inside guys Andrew Smith and Khyle Marshall should be much more effective with better spacing. Can they hold up to the Atlantic 10 grind?

8. Memphis (Conference USA)
There are really no more excuses for Josh Pastner and this now-experienced core. Adding Shaq Goodwin to the mix is a bonus, but there's enough talent here even without Will Barton to have a big season.

9. Northern Iowa (Missouri Valley)
A young team last season that is a sleeper in the Missouri Valley this season. Ben Jacobson can really coach and the Panthers' tempo control could be the antidote to Creighton's high-powered O.

10. Gonzaga (West Coast)
I like what Saint Mary's has coming back, but I like the Zags' personnel a bit better. One of the better conference rivalries will again come down to the wire, and probably a third game in Vegas in March.

SportsIllustrated:
Graham #1 and Wright #3 sophomore breakout prospects in the country

1. Treveon Graham, 6-5 SG, VCU
Freshman points per game: 7.0
Freshman minutes per game: 16.7
Percent of team possessions used: 24.2
Offensive Efficiency Rating: 102.5

There's a small risk in making Graham the headliner: Our background check revealed a proclivity for pantsing, but kept in moderation it should not hinder his breakout. His significant-usage (a team-high 24.2 percent), decent-efficiency (102.5 ORating) profile as a freshman who didn't turn 18 until October 2011 suggests immense potential. The departure of Bradford Burgess, who set the Division I record for career starts while playing the same oversized-wing position as Graham, should free up the minutes he needs to score in the mid-double digits as a sophomore. He was valuable to the Rams in a limited role as a freshman, drawing a team-high 6.0 fouls per 40 minutes and also crashing the glass surprisingly well (with an OReb% of 9.5) for a 6-foot-5 guard. Graham was recruited as a scorer, acted like a scorer off the bench, and there's no reason to believe he'll stop doing so when he's elevated into VCU's starting lineup.

3. Jerrell Wright, 6-8 PF, La Salle
Freshman points per game: 9.8
Freshman minutes per game: 19.8
Percent of team possessions used: 26.5
Offensive Efficiency Rating: 105.9

Before Wright played his first game for the Explorers, coach/Dr. John Giannini said, "I think he's going to be one of the most productive players I've ever coached." Giannini only put Wright on the floor for 49.1 percent of the team's minutes as a freshman, but the product of Dobbins Tech (the same Philly high school that produced Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble) was exceptionally productive as a high-usage, efficient scorer. He also had the team's highest offensive rebounding percentage (13.0), second-best defensive rebounding percentage (19.9) and he drew the most fouls per 40 minutes (5.6). According to kenpom.com's similarity scores, the player whose freshman season Wright's most closely matched was J.J. Hickson's 2008 at NC State -- and Hickson jumped to the NBA straight after that. Wright has real star potential in the Atlantic 10.

A-10 Men's Basketball Schedule Features Record TV Package, Marquee Matchups
Image

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference announced its 2012-13 men's basketball conference schedule Thursday. The docket includes a league-record 56 nationally televised games and 19 regionally televised games as part of the league's agreements with its media partners for a total of 75 games as part of the Atlantic 10 package.

2012-13 Men's Basketball Schedule:
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/atl ... hedule.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

For the fourth straight year, CBS Sports will broadcast the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship title game as part of its Selection Sunday coverage. The network will also air the VCU at Temple regular season game on March 10. In addition, CBS Sports Network will nationally air 32 regular season A-10 matchups, doubling the number of games from last year, and the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship.

"Securing a record number of national television broadcasts is the best way to showcase the Atlantic 10," Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade stated. "We are poised to have one of the best seasons in A-10 men's basketball history and this television package will allow us to showcase our teams. ESPN and CBS Sports have been outstanding media partners."

ESPN will air 14 additional A-10 regular season games on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. This includes a rivalry game in Xavier at Dayton, Gonzaga at Butler on ESPN's College Gameday and a rematch of the 2011 Final Four matchup between Butler and VCU on March 2. In all, ESPN will air seven Conference games and seven non-conference games as part of the Atlantic 10 package.

The 75 televised games will highlight a league coming off of a record eight postseason bids last year. The 2012-13 A-10 features 16 members, including newcomers Butler and VCU, providing new rivalries and further strengthening the A-10 position as the best basketball-centric league in Division I. The additions allow for new matchups between natural rivals Butler and Saint Louis (Jan. 31, Feb. 22) and VCU and Richmond (Jan. 24, March 6). Long-standing rivalries also highlight the television schedule, including both Dayton-Xavier games, and the Temple-Saint Joseph's game. In all, 52 of the 68 regular season television matchups are Atlantic 10 Conference games, meaning nearly half of the league's 128-game schedule will be televised nationally or regionally.

The Hurleys reshaping URI Rams
Image

Rhode Island coach Danny Hurley and assistant Bobby Hurley are doing everything they can to make sure the Rams are even more competitive this season. That’s why the two Hurleys were in Virginia on Wednesday checking out Virginia Episcopal School 6-8 forward Ifeanyi Onyekaba.

On Thursday, Onyekaba was on campus trying to be admitted to school. If he can be admitted then the Nigerian native would likely have to go through a waiver to play this season. Still, getting Onyekaba to come to URI in mid-September is an example how aggressive the Hurleys are becoming in reshaping the Rams. A number of programs were hoping to land Onyekaba for the fall of 2013, not immediately for 2012.

Hawks buzz has already begun at Saint Joseph's
Image

It's becoming more and more quaint in modern, football-driven college athletics, but there's still such a thing as a basketball school. Saint Joseph's University, up on Philadelphia's Main Line, with a rich hardwood tradition that has translated well into modern times, most certainly is one.

Early fall is different at basketball schools. Unencumbered by the immediate, overwhelming pull of football, there is room to breathe. Basketball ultimately takes its place, but anticipation typically builds like a slow boil. When school begins, there's more than a month to go until official practice, two until the season actually tips. The sport starts more as discussion point than passion play, unless something special is in the air;

"Same city, same conference:
Richmond-VCU rivalry ripens"

Image

When the Atlantic 10 announced this summer that it was offering invitations to Butler and VCU the national headlines were mostly about how two recent Final Four participants -- and their fine young coaches -- were upgrading in league affiliation.

But the story was different in the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia because the city of Richmond found itself in a unique situation. Suddenly, it was the home of two relevant basketball programs that participate in the same basketball league.

"It's a huge deal -- especially on the heels of two years ago when VCU went to the Final Four and we went to the Sweet 16," said Richmond coach Chris Mooney. "We were both in San Antonio for that Sweet 16, and the city really got caught up in that. So for this to happen very shortly after that makes this even more exciting, more interesting and better. I think it's going to be great."

Unlimited Possibilities for A-10 Basketball
Image
Barclays Center Opening Provides Endless Opportunities for Conference

When the announcement of a five-year partnership was made in September of 2011, Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade said: "The opportunity to partner with the Barclays Center and bring the Atlantic 10 Basketball Championship to New York has unlimited possibilities. Our teams will compete in the newest, state-of-the-art facility within the Atlantic 10 footprint and the number-one media market in the country."

“Unlimited possibilities” means A-10 teams have the opportunity to play on the largest stage in the world like never before. It means the conference has the chance to grow the annual championship into a must-go event and not just a four-day tournament.

Sept. 26, 2012

NEW YORK, NY - After an extensive national search, Fordham University announced today the appointment of David T. Roach as the new director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation. Roach, who saw 75 of his teams win league championships in 22 years as an athletic director and who served as the president of the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors in 2010-2011, will begin his tenure on October 15.

“In David Roach, we have found an athletic director with a demonstrated ability to inspire the best performances from his student-athletes, both on the field and in the classroom,” said Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham. “David’s approach - giving equal weight to athletics and scholarship - makes him an ideal fit for Fordham. We are confident that our student-athletes will benefit greatly under his leadership.”

"I'm extremely excited about joining the Fordham University family,” said Roach. “I cannot wait to get to campus and begin working with Father McShane, the University administration, campus community, outstanding coaches and athletic staff to accomplish great things for Fordham student-athletes. I have always admired Fordham's educational mission and the role that intercollegiate athletics plays in accomplishing that mission. I'm honored and humbled to have been selected as Fordham's Director of Athletics."

ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU (15 MBB/3 WBB): The Worldwide Leader will carry 14 regular season men’s basketball games, plus the league championship game. The last three years, ESPN has held the rights to the A-10 Men’s Basketball Championship Game, but chose to sublicense it CBS. It is unclear if ESPN will continue in this manner or if it will broadcast the game.

Image
CBS Sports Network (27 MBB/10 WBB): CBS Sports Network will air 25 regular season men’s and eight women’s games, plus the A-10 Tournament Semifinals. Former Virginia Coach Pete Gillen, working for the network during a tournament in Cancun in 2007, once said he wanted to put Joey Rodriguez on a bagel, or something like that. I have no idea what it means, but I hope there’s more of that in our future.

NBC Sports Network (25*/6*WBB): The artist formerly known as Versus will broadcast 25 men’s and six women’s games on national TV. NBC will also air the A-10 Tournament Quarterfinals on regional networks. For VCU, this means Comcast, which merged with NBC last year. NBC has the option of airing the quarterfinal games nationally on NBC Sports Network.

Very astute observation. History tells us that 1 VCU person constitutes a crowd.
